On behalf of the Upper Midwest Dutch Rabbit Club I would like to welcome everyone to the 87th National Dutch Show in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Many of you who attended the 2011 NDS will remember the facility being easily accessible. The show will be held at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds just off the interstate with the hotel, shopping, restaurants, and area attractions nearby. The National Dutch Show is the ADRC's crown jewel each year. As Dutch breeders we have been preparing to come together for this weekend of friendly competition in this sport we love so well. Some will go home with a shiny new award to display in their home while others may add a rabbit to their herd which will hopefully be just what they need to get closer to producing the ideal Dutch. Certainly, no matter what the results are we will all go home after spending time with friends we don't get to see enough of. With many breeders missing out on the trills of competition at convention last fall and possibly this fall as well. Don't be the one to miss exhibiting at NDS in Wisconsin. You may wish to take in some of the area attractions. The showroom is just minutes from the shores of Lake Michigan. Manitowoc has the Maritime Museum which is well worth your time touring even if you’re not into ships. With just a short drive to the north, you’ll find the Legendary Lambeau Field and home of the Green Bay Packers. There's so much to see and do in America's Dairyland you better come early and stay awhile.

The 87th National Dutch Show hosted by the Upper Midwest Dutch Rabbit Club is dedicated to the memory of Karen Gate’s. On June 6, 1962 she was born Karen J. Fait as one of the twin daughters to Stanley and Joan Fait of Marshfield, Wisconsin. Little would she know while growing up that raising some pet bunnies in the backyard would become a way of life. Karen became a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association and the American Dutch Rabbit Club in 1984 as well as the Wisconsin State Rabbit Breeders Association. She was a charter member of the Upper Midwest Dutch Rabbit Club where she served as a director as well as in her local club the Central Wisconsin Rabbit Breeders Association. Like most of us, she raised several other breeds from time to time throughout her life with Dutch being her breed of choice. Karen began her show career exhibiting with twin sister, Sharon, in the early 1980's. They started with the local fair and then progressed to ARBA sanctioned shows throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest. After winning Best Opposite Variety Black Dutch on their homegrown Jr Buck at their first ARBA Convention in 1988, they proved the Fait sisters line was one to be reckoned with. On August 17,1991 she was united in marriage to Darrell Gates in Marshfield. The two of them along with their son, Tony, attended most of the national shows. Karen always kept the results of all the placings at the shows she's attended. For years, she just wrote them down on scratch pieces of paper until years ago when we gave her the official results binder. At nationals you would always find her recording her rabbit’s results on the back of her name tag. If you have bought raffle tickets at the shows you have probably seen her name on the list of winners as she enjoyed taking part in the raffles in a big way. Karen was also a supporter of the raffles by donating Dutch, you could always find some on the ARBA youth raffle. Karen also loved swimming and camping, as she made sure to get a hotel with a pool when going to a show if they weren't camping. Many youth had help getting started in rabbits with her help. When you found one of her rabbits on your pedigrees, the first thing you would notice is the name as it would be Gate's Sir this or Gate's Lady that. Karen isn't with us but her memory and her love for Dutch rabbits lives on in all of us.
