Teeing off #5 at Sunnyside

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host a series of nine public meetings in May to review and discuss recent recommendations from an advisory council tasked with adjusting Montana’s hunting and fishing licenses and fees. The Fish & Wildlife Licensing and Funding Advisory Council spent the past eight months examining FWP’s current license system and funding cycle for fish and wildlife management.

That work resulted in recent recommendations to FWP Director Jeff Hagener that would provide an additional $6.25 million a year to stave off deep budget cuts to fish and wildlife management programs. The recommendations are aimed at a simplified licensing system; standardized license discounts for youth, seniors, and disabled hunters; a revamped base price structure and

other adjustments to provide a fair and stable source of revenue for the state’s fish and wildlife conservation efforts. The public meetings are set for May 1-28 and will each begin at 7 p.m. The evenings will focus on explaining the LFAC recommendations and getting feedback to help direct FWP’s funding proposal for the 2015 Legislature. Kenneth Fuhrman, 83, passed away of natural causes on April 23, 2014 at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Montana. Ken was born to Peter K. and Paulina (Miller) Fuhrman on August 24, 1930, in Glasgow and was the ninth of ten children. Ken was raised on the family farm during the summers and in Glasgow during the winters. As with many farm boys, he learned to drive when he was very young, obtaining his driver’s license at 13 years old so he could drive grain trucks to and from town. Ken attended high school in Glasgow, graduating in 1948. While in high school, a beautiful and sweet hearted young lady captivated Ken’s eyes and his heart. Shirley Engstrom became the love of Ken’s life, and the high school sweethearts were married on December 4, 1949 at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow. Ken and Shirley settled in the Larslan area after their marriage, where they capably raised their five children, and farmed and ranched until their retirement. Ken’s children were always his main priority and farming was second nature. When Ken climbed onto the combine in the fall of the year, it was always evident he was in his favorite place. He was also a natural at working with cattle, maybe because of his extremely patient temperament. Throughout his life, Ken experienced a variety of health challenges, most notably lupus. Each challenge was faced with courage, perseverance, a sense of humor, with Shirley always by his side. Ken was an exceptional father and grandfather, and his first and foremost priority was always his family. Though a

hard working man, he was never too busy to listen, lend a hand, provide a word of encouragement, visit, play a game of cribbage or smear, or watch a few cartoons with his children or grandchildren. His brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends were an integral and important part of his life. Ken was a humble, compassionate, respectful, caring, generous, honest, trustworthy, and selfless man. His family was blessed to have him in their lives for so many years and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lenore, and his brothers Walter, Clarence, Melvin, Earl and Jim. He is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Greg (Debi) Fuhrman of Larslan, Kevin (Joan) Fuhrman of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Brent Fuhrman of Hayward, California, and Paul (Shari) Fuhrman of Idaho Falls; daughter Darcie (Steve) Martinson of Idaho Falls; sisters Ruth Gilbertson, Phyllis Campbell, and Barbara Bales; and grandchildren Marcea Soper, Jerod Fuhrman, Robert Martinson, Leah Fuhrman, Amanda Jenson, Wayne Fuhrman, Kendra Martinson, Kaitlin Fuhriman, Clint Fuhrman, and Laurel Fuhrman, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 29th at the Glasgow First Lutheran Church with Pastor Scott Hedegaard officiating, and a reception will follow. A visitation will be held with family and friends tonight (Monday evening) at 7:00 at the Bell Mortuary. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Bell and the doctors and nurses at Glasgow Clinic who expertly cared for Ken over the years, and especially the CNAs and nurses at Valley View Home who patiently and lovingly cared for Ken during the final and most difficult year of his life.

for Tuesday, May 6th at the Cottonwood Inn. The council’s recomm-endations come at a critical time as FWP nears the end of a 10- year cycle since the last increase in resident hunting and fishing license fees. Montana’s last general resident hunting and fishing license fee increase approved by the Montana Legislature came in 2005 and in 2003 for nonresidents. FWP fish and wildlife management programs are primarily funded via the sale of fishing and hunting licenses. The call for the funding and license review came from both the 2013 Montana Legislature and Governor Steve Bullock. The council’s recommendations are now available via FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov; click “Licensing and Funding Advisory Council”.

My wife told me the other day that I don’t take her to expensive places any more, so I took her to the gas station. And that’s when the fight started...

The Glasgow High School Educational Trust recently received a grant for $5,968.00 from the Montana Bankers Education Foundation Endowment of the Montana Community Foundation. Valley Bank of Glasgow recommended the trust for this award, reflecting a shared commitment to assist local students in achieving their educational goals. With the cost of higher education and student debt both at all-time highs, such generous gifts are particularly significant and appreciated. Established by the GHS Class of 1938 in 1964, the trust has given over $1.5 million dollars to over 1000 different GHS graduates to help pay for tuition, fees, and other school expenses. Many of these students have received several awards over their courses of study. The trust’s emphasis has always been on need, and all GHS graduates who are attending college or vocational/technical school full-time, are in good academic standing, and are making steady progress towards the completion of a degree may apply. Students must have finished one year of college or one semester of vocational/technical school and complete other requirements detailed on the application

(available at www.ghsedutrust.org) as well. The application deadline for both semesters of the 2014-2015 school year is July 1, 2014. Applications for spring semester 2015 only are due October 15, 2014. Whenever the trust receives donations that total $500 or more in honor, recognition, or memory of a particular individual or organization, a gift is made in that person’s or organization’s name. Gifts to the trust of $10,000 or more entitle the donor to an annual naming opportunity in perpetuity. In addition to the financial aid given to students, the trust also uses its income to purchase enrichment programs and equipment for Glasgow High School that cannot be financed within the regular budget. These gifts benefit all departments and students of GHS and the public at large when they attend events or participate in programs hosted by the school. The value of these purchases currently totals $180,327.53. Valley Bank’s support of the Glasgow High School Educational Trust’s mission through this gift from the Montana Bankers Education Foundation Endowment is one more example of its dedication to the community it serves.

Officers and staff of Valley Bank that nominated the GHS Educational Trust for award are (back row from left) Barb Gallagher, Deb Partridge, Hollie Frost, Rich Kingsley, Ken Jansa, Linda Miller, Marjie Capdeville and Maridene Johnson. Front row - Shelly Sanders, Lisa Greenough, Lisa Wiltfong and Whitney Beil.
