Wellness Fair On Tuesday, April 17, Wawanesa School held a Wellness Fair for students in Grades 9-12. In the morning, the Grade 11s took part in SAFE talk (suicide prevention training) with Tess Lelond of the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority. The Grade 9 and 10s learned a lot about the effects of smoking on the aging process with a presentation from George Koch, Manitoba Lung Association. In this presentation, students' pictures were digitally changed by the use of a computer program. Some of our students were able to see how they may look in their 50s, 60s and 70s. Then they were shown how they would look in these same pictures if they had smoked. Students were surprised at the changes they saw in a person's facial features. In the afternoon, students revolved between three sessions: SERC (Sexuality Education Resource Centre), Jest Stix, and a testimonial given by a throat cancer survivor, Leroy Kehler. The SERC sessions presented by Amanda Hamm were well received by the students. Topics covered were the effects of drug/alcohol use relating to sexual activity, STI's, and prevention. Students

were made aware of the impact their choices can have on themselves now and in their future lives. Isaac Girardin, the creator of Jest Stix, taught the students a type of juggling using three sticks. Isaac took the students through different techniques, then put on a show for the students at the end of the day. Leroy Kehler spoke to the students about the dangers of smoking, and how his life has been affected by it. He encouraged students to quit smoking if they have already started and to never start if they haven't yet. Special thanks are extended to the student council for hosting a bar-b-q on the front steps for the high school students. Also thank you to our school's Peer Support team Cam Lucier, Morgan McBain, Matt Lahner, Lauresa Mason, Tylyn Riddle, Cassie Power, Kirstin Greer, Ashley Penner, Emma Case, Kaylin Rice and advisors Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Kaastra and Mrs. Borton for organizing and helping to host this event.

F1 Racing Car Competition Garett Moore and Yuhan Huang competed in the Formula 1 Technology Challenge racing car competition on April 17th. Students use a CAD program (computer software) to design and a C&C Mill to build a race car. Yuhan reports: We built our cars on a program called CATIA. After they were done on the computer, we milled them.

It took us two hours to get to University of Manitoba. We signed in and got two stickers to put on the cars, then set up our display table and put the poster up while we were waiting for the race to start. We got a chance to practice first. It was pretty fun! At 11:00 a.m., we had our presentation. Two judges asked us about the engine and dynamics and how we built the car. They were nice and friendly. They also told us there were some real size racing cars in the next room that the students in U of M had made. At 11:30, the racing started. There were nine teams and we were # 9. Two teams raced together, so we didn’t have an opponent. Our time was 1.333 seconds; our reaction time was 0.185 second, a little bit slower than others. Although we didn’t win, we still learned from this competition. It was a great experience!

Library News Our Scholastic Book Fair has been a success. We must once again thank everyone who attended the fair. Without your support, we would not be able to have so many wonderful books in our library. The total for this Fair was $1686.25 which gives us $900.00 worth of new books for the library. The winner of the parent evening draw was Kyle Bessant-Cairns and Mrs. Boake’s Grade 2 class with each receiving $25 in books. Door prizes have been delivered to the winners. We would also like to thank the people who made the goodies, and Michele and Patrick Day for all their help on our Books and Brownie evening.

What’s Digging in Grade 2? After a study of Dinosaurs, the Grade 2’s have gone on a dinosaur dig. Using tiny shovels and brushes, students unearthed several dinosaur ‘fossils’ from the excavation pit in the classroom. Then an information sheet was filled in on the dinosuar that they found. Much was learned about dinosaurs, so just ask us about them!!!

Konnex Community Projects Students learn and work best when they are passionate and interested in what they are doing. This allows students to take those individual interests and learn through real world experiences. On Monday, April 30th, a group of the Grade 10 students are having a yard sale to raise money to help build a flower garden for the pool. All proceeds will be used to buy materials and flowers. Following that, on June 9th, another group of Grade 10 students are putting on a town wide fishing derby! The derby will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Seddon’s Landing. There will be prizes to be won! More details are on the poster below. On May 31st, all Grade 10 students will be displaying their projects from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the school. This is an open house for anyone interested; please join our Grade 10 students and see a great variety of projects.

Choral Field Trip On April 12, the Wawanesa School Choral students in Grades 7-12 journeyed to Brandon to attend Neelin High School's musical production, "Urinetown". With such an unusual title for this musical, we had a feeling the production was going to be out of the ordinary and we weren't disappointed. Following is the synopsis of the show and our students’ reactions to it.

“One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20 year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The ci t izens mus t u se publ ic amenit ie s, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!”

~ The lighting added greatly to the mood of the scenes and songs. The background would flash red or blue or stay white.~ The clothes were very fitting to each character: dirty, ragged; rich and proper; uniform and giving an air of authority.~ the singing was phenomenal~ the acting was all very convincing and even the smallest of roles had great actors~ the spinning backdrop was pretty smart and worked well~ I loved it. It was brilliant and extremely good for high schoolers~ They had rehearsed lots and remembered their lines well.~ In the cop song, they had it dark and each person had two blue flashlights and they moved them around to the rhythm which was really cool.~ I mostly remember the poor peoples’ outfits and hair-dos. They wore ragged, ripped clothing and their hair was crazy and very messy. They had make up on their face, arms and legs to make them look grubby.~ I enjoyed the performance because it was hilarious with a good story. The best play I think they have put on.
