In accordance with Canon Law (945ff), Fr. Jim and Fr. Lou are offering their Mass for different intentions to continue to fulfill the intentions received by parishioners weekly. We are currently backlogged on Mass intentions, as priests are only allowed to celebrate one Mass each Sunday in the absence of a congregation. The following intentions have been offered on the date originally scheduled, or at the earliest opportunity of the priest.

We would like to stay in touch with every parishioner! If there are any changes in your contact information, please contact Mona at [email protected] or call her at (360) 292-7141.

Fr. Jim LeePastor

GRATITUDE.

“God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses!”As we continue our Easter journey and enter into our seventh week of “stay-at-home” confinement, I want to take a moment and share how incredibly grateful I am for our parish and school staff. They have all worked so very hard to pivot into this new reality.

Our parish school went “virtual” overnight, literally. Because of foresight, proper financial planning and good stewardship we have been positioned to use the best technology available to teach, form and guide our students and their parents without being physically in the classroom. I have heard how teachers have called parents just to check in with them; to ask how they are adjusting; to follow up on a missed assignment; to just have a simple conversation with one of their students. Our teachers and faculty are so dedicated. I am impressed with their heartfelt dedication and the depth of their Catholic faith. If you know of any parishioner or friend who desires this kind of educational/formational opportunity, please have them contact Connor Geraghty at the school office.

No less amazing has been our parish staff. We have been answering phones, mailing bulletins, responding to questions via many different platforms. Our Faith Formation staff, very much like the teachers have reached out personally to every family and provided human connection as well as quality content. They have been especially attentive to the disappointment of those preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion for the first time. They have reached out to those filled with anxiety about their marriage date. Our EDGE and Life Teen youth ministers have connected weekly with their teens offering connection and content to engage them in ways to help grow their faith. This has been a challenge, but they are up for it. R.C.I.A. and Alpha have gone totally virtual. Young adults meet online to pray and discuss. Even Wednesday morning the Men’s Group (most of whom have many years of wisdom—meaning they are old like me) is meeting online. Yes, we’ve had to adapt and it’s not quite the same, but being able to pray together and to pray for one another has been so powerful.

Our administrative and facilities staff keep things moving. They make sure that your financial generosity is counted and secure. They continue to publish the bulletin and send out letters. They have deep cleaned every one of our facilities and continue to provide a safe and healthy environment for the men’s group. These “behind the scenes” folks are so very important to our parish mission and ministry.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis we doubled the number of men we serve in our overnight shelter from 15 to 30. We had to develop protocols for health and safety. We had to host the shelter every night of the week, not just four. We have had the challenge to not burn out our volunteers and to train new ones.

We have marshaled the goodness of more than 65 parishioners who have called more than 800 parishioners over the age of 70 to

reach out, keep in touch with and pass on any important information so that they feel part of the parish community as well as offer assistance. This human contact, even though it’s over the phone, has lifted the spirits of so many of our elderly who are by themselves and can feel lonely. What a beautiful gift.

Our eight person liturgy team has been awesome. The quality of our live stream Masses has only continued to become more robust and beautiful. We have had more than 5,300 views of our Easter Mass. We know that not everyone was present at the time we were celebrating or that everybody stayed or watched the entire Mass. Nonetheless this is an opportunity to reach out, to evangelize and to invite folks who may never have heard of Saint Michael Catholic Church or even Jesus Christ. We are able to do this because of our Faithraising Campaign and your incredible generosity.

I am immensely grateful for the continued generosity of so many for your online giving and mailing in or dropping off your sacrificial offerings each week. We are cutting and monitoring our expenses. We are seeking to be the best stewards of your financial gifts as possible. Every gift is important to us and essential to our mission.

Therefore, if you need us, please contact us. Give us a call or send us an email. If you have questions or don’t understand something, connect with us so that we can connect with you. Please keep in touch by reading the bulletin every week, staying connected through SMP Connect, the parish website, and our parish app. You belong here! We are here to help.

In Christ, through the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio, I love you.

Fr. Jim models the latest in pandemic fashions. He's clearly not maintaining 6' distance from the Blessed Mother, though!

I have mycobacteria. It is an infection in the lungs. I was put on oxygen and antibiotics, which are helping me very much. We had a deacon from Sacred Heart and every Wednesday he would bring us Holy Communion. When they said no one could leave the grounds he could not come in anymore. It had been so long that I was not able to go to Mass and now we could not receive communion. One Sunday when I was feeling down and just sitting I remember I didn't open the card from the church. I opened it and just cried. Then I felt God put His arm around me for just a second. As I looked up I saw the plaque I had hanging on my wall which said "Be STILL and KNOW that I AM," I knew God was with me. A big thank you to the angels that sent the cards—what a gift from Heaven they have been to me and, I am sure, to many! God truly worked through you. I can also get Father's Mass. He made it so much easier and that's a big help. Thank you Father Jim and Fr Lou! God Bless everyone working at the church at this time. May He keep all of you and your family safe.

4WITH COVID-19

In response to Fr. Lou's letter, we wanted to share a little of how we are "growing in Faith" through this challenge our world is in the midst of.• John and I have found daily Mass online with Bishop Barron

to be a great uplift in the day. • We have been going (by ourselves) to the Westside and

praying through the Stations of the Cross on Friday after-noons; this is great peaceful time for us.

• Attending Lenten Daily reflections on FORMED with Tim Gray gives us great points to reflect on and discuss.

• Last Thursday we were able to join our Small Group for reading and prayer over Sunday's Gospel through Zoom—quite a technological milestone for us and one we might not have achieved otherwise.

• I have had the blessing to share and discuss various Scrip-ture readings with our 13 year-old granddaughter via email. She is truly a gift from God; she checks on Papa and Gram-ma regularly.

• We have been able to spend time outdoors at home working on things just to spruce up the natural beauty of our prop-erty, and giving great thanks to God for all He provides.

• Calling friends who do not have a strong faithful foundation and sharing good discussion about God and "a voice crying out in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord." Very spiritually rewarding.

• I have gone to Planned Parenthood and sat by myself in my car, since 40 Days for Life was canceled, praying for the unborn babies and women who may be inside.

These are some of the ways we are adjusting/coping, besides increasing our daily prayers. We are praying fervently for our Saint Michael Parish family and asking for strength and guidance for Father Jim and Father Lou, understanding how extremely difficult this is for them to be physically separated from their flock.May the Holy Spirit be with you and blessings of our God be abundant.Be well.Love,John and Robin Jones

Ask Fr. LouWHY DOES THE APOSTLES’ CREED SAY JESUS

“DESCENDED INTO HELL ... ?"

Did He go there just to say "neener, neener" to all the suffering souls?

Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, "hell"—Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek —because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God. Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or righteous, while they await the Redeemer: which does not mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into "Abraham's bosom". It is precisely these holy souls who awaited their Savior in Abraham's bosom whom Christ the Lord delivered when he "descended into hell." Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before Him. This liberation is known as "the harrowing of hell."

In the Nicene Creed (the one we normally say at Mass) we don’t hear this specific language, but we do hear something similar. The Nicene Creed is very much intended to echo the Apostle’s Creed and its change in language is to emphasis that Jesus Christ truly was born, suffered, died, rose, and ascended! The language was expanded from "he descended into hell," but didn't change the meaning or intention, just provided clarification.

This ministry is an opportunity for children in grades Kinder-garten through 3rd grade to experience God’s Word during Mass, presented in a way they can understand and apply to their lives. The purpose is to lead children to, “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy.During Mass the children are dismissed to a separate space where they can have this opportunity. During this time that we are unable to attend Mass I invite you to take some time to break open the word with your children. For our children, the Gospel and readings have been prepared by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy in such a way that it does not alter the mean-ing, but is easier for them to understand. These readings have been approved for use in U.S. dioceses by the Conference of Catholic Bishops and confirmed by the Apostolic See. You can see the children's version here. After hearing the Gospel, discussing some of the following topics with your children will help them to understand and apply it to their lives.

PRAYER:

Dear Jesus, Please help me to recognize you in myself and others. Please help me to feel your presence and know that you are with me. In your name, I pray. They say that hindsight is 20/20. This means that often we cannot fully understand an event in our lives until it is over. We experience this all the time. During a soccer game we shoot the ball but it is blocked. Later someone tells us that a teammate was completely open and could have made the shot. We realize that we should have passed the ball instead of shooting it. This can happen because we were not paying full attention. We are not looking or listening well enough. The two disciples in today’s Gospel experienced this. They walked all day talking with a “stranger” about Jesus. It was not until they sat down to dinner and the stranger broke the bread

that they realized who it was. Unfortunately, Jesus disappeared, leaving them thinking, “How could we not have known it was Him?” They thought of so many things they could have said and questions they could have asked if they had recognized Him earlier in the day and paid closer attention. One of the most important parts of today’s story is what happened to help them finally recognize Jesus. It was when He broke the bread, just as He had done at the Last Supper. At the Last Supper, Jesus told them to always remember Him when they broke bread and shared wine. It is in these actions that we still experience Jesus’ presence. Every time we go to Mass the priest breaks bread (now we use hosts) and shares it along with the wine. If we pay attention at that part of the Mass we can actually feel Jesus with us. The best part is that we can experience that feeling EVERY time we go to Mass. Next time you are in church try to listen to the prayers and watch the actions of the priest. Notice how you feel Jesus with you. Notice how that feeling can make you feel loved, safe and happy, then carry that feeling with you when you leave church. Let it guide you throughout your day

and throughout your life.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Why don’t you think the disciples recognized Jesus? What happened to make them realize that it was Him?

How do you think they felt when they realized it was Jesus? What can you do to help yourself pay

attention during Mass so you don’t miss Jesus? How do you recognize Jesus in your life?

The following activity is an excellent way to help solidify your discussion for your child:

ACTIVITY:

Supplies: Blank Name Tags, Markers –

other optional decorating supplies such as glue, glitter, etc.

Give every child a name tag. Ask them to write “Jesus” on it, decorate it and then wear it back to church and throughout the rest of the day to remind themselves that Jesus is with them and in them as well as everyone else.

Shoulder to ShoulderPARISHIONERS HELPING PARISHIONERS

How many times have we heard Fr. Jim marvel at the generosity of Saint Michael parishioners? We are blessed to be a family of families who truly care about one another. That spirit of generosity is clearly demonstrated in the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry, which works through a special fund set up to help parishioners who are struggling financially.

Parishioners who find themselves in a financial crisis simply com-plete a confidential application, which is then screened by a com-mittee of parishioners who, in turn, make a funding recommen-dation to Fr. Jim. If approved, the parish issues a check directly to the service provider–the doctor, landlord or roof repair company, etc.– not the applicant.

Applications are available on the parish website and are held in strict confidence.

Small GroupsSMALL GROUPS CONTINUE TO MEET!

Christ is risen! During this past Lent most groups continued to meet even though we were all practicing social distancing and staying home. What a blessing ZOOM has been! Thank you to all facilitators who used Zoom and other platforms to keep their groups together and continuing with Lectio Divina on the upcoming Sunday gospels. Several facilitators reported that attendance was even better via Zoom than in person!

Many groups continue to meet year round. Fr Jim and I would like to encourage all small groups to continue to meet during this time of isolation. Contact with our parish family is important. You can find the reading for the upcoming Sunday gospel from the USCCB website. There is also a wonderful new tool through Evangelical Catholic called NEXTSTEP that we are asking all facilitators to use with their group for the next eight weeks. Please go to ecxextstep.com and set up an account (it is free!) Facilitators, please go through the “Becoming a Guide” module before starting the other modules with your group. Anyone can set up an account and go through the modules! Learn more about prayer, meditating on God’s word in scripture, getting more out of mass and being reconciled in confession.

If you are not now part of a small group but would like to join one virtually please contact Michaela Moreau.

Jennifer Rietzke, Anthony Welsh, Grant Winkley, and Nayeli have been in formation through the RCIA for several years. Their godparents presented them to the bishop and, having been found worthy, we rejoice that they are now numbered among the elect. I encourage you to continue to lift up in prayer these men and women and hold them in your affection, that those who were catechumens, now numbered among the elect, will soon become Catholic through the Sacraments of Christian initiation!
