What is accurate about this model What is inaccurate about this model 1.) The membrane and the shell of the egg together represent the lithosphere. The lithosphere is made up of the crust and the very top part of the mantle. In the model, the shell represents the crust, and the membrane represents the top part of the mantle. The membrane also represents the top part of the mantle well, because it is very thin, as is the top part of the mantle. 1.) In the model, the eggshell represents the crust of the Earth. On the crust, I know there are ocean crusts, which are 5-10 kilometers thick and continental crusts, which are 35-70 kilometers thick. Obviously, these thicknesses are very different. The shell on the egg doesn't have different thickness throughout the shell. If there were thicker parts on the shell, it would represent the Earth's crust more accurately. 2.) In this model, the yolk of the egg represents the inner core of the Earth. In many ways, they are similar. The inner core is made up of the denser materials that sink to the middle of the Earth, making it more compacted and staying solid. This is similar to the way the egg yolk formed. While it was cooking, all the denser parts of the egg sank to the middle, while the less dense parts rose to the outside. This makes the egg yolk more compacted and stay solid. 2.) One of the layers of the Earth, the outer core, is completely liquid, due to the lower pressure. In the egg model, all parts of the egg are solid. This isn't accurate, because the solid egg doesn't properly indicate that there even is a liquid layer of the Earth. For this egg model to represent the outer core in more detail, the part that's in between the egg white (mantle) and the egg yolk (inner core) would have to be liquid. 3.) If you gently crack the shell of the egg, it will appear like the tectonic plates that are like cracks on the crust of the Earth. The more you crack the egg shell, the more cracks appear. That is the same case for the tectonic plates and the crust. The more activity that's going on at plate boundaries, the more cracks there will be in the Earth's crust. 3.) The mantle makes up 2/3 of all the Earth's layers. In the egg model, the yolk actually takes up more space than the egg white if you look at the inside from a bird's-eye view point. If, somehow, the yolk were to be smaller or the egg white larger, then this model would have displayed a better understanding of the Earth's mantle layer. 4.) There are always convection currents happening in the mantle, because the heat source, which is the center, hotter part of Earth's layers, the inner core, allows warmer molecules to rise. The cooler molecules that are in the magma push down and force the warm molecules to rise. This will keep continuing in a cycle. However, in the egg model we used convection currents weren't occurring in the egg white, which represented the mantle. If the egg yolk was a heat source in the egg and convection currents were occurring, then the Earth would have been more precisely modeled. 5.) If you crack the shell of the egg gently, it would represent the Earth's tectonic plates. However, to represent the tectonic plates, you would have to crack the egg shell yourself. On Earth, the tectonic plates formed by itself. They were made because of the convection currents that were occurring inside the mantle. If there was a way that cracks could appear in the egg shell on its own, the model of the Earth would be more exact. 6.) The consistency of the mantle is similar to hot tar, paste, or cake icing. In the model, the egg white represented the mantle, but it didn't have the same consistency as hot tar, paste, or cake icing. Instead, it was hard and gel-like. I think that if the egg had been a little undercooked, it would have a similar consistency to the molten rock in the mantle. April 25, 2013 Core 1

Inaccurate 1: One reason why the egg is a bad model o resemble the Earth is because on the

Earth's crust, there are cracks all over. These cracks in the crust form Continental and Oceanic plates. These plates move over time, creating divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries. These plate boundaries have different ways of moving past one another. The egg's shell, on the other hand, is just one big piece of crust. There are no cracks or plates, just one smooth layer. The shell doesn't move either.

2: Another reason why the egg is a bad model to resemble the Earth is because the

arth's crust has many different landforms, ike mountains, volcanoes, and rift valleys. hese landforms form when the divergent,

convergent, and transform plate boundaries move past one another. Divergent boundaries move apart form one another, creating gaps called rift valleys. Convergent boundaries collide into each other, crumpling and folding to create mountains. Convergent boundaries also sometimes subduct under one another if one is more dense, forming volcanoes. The egg, owever, is smooth on the crust and doesn't ave any valleys or mountains; It is all just

flat land.

3: The final reason why the egg is a bad model to resemble the Earth is because the Earth is constantly moving. In the asthenosphere, which is the hotter, softer layer of rock in the mantle below the lithosphere, there is convection occurring. The heated rock is shoved upwards, cooled, then sinks back down, and is heated again in convection currents. The hot, soft rock is constantly moving. But the egg does not

(on brick)

Accurate 1: One of the reasons why the egg is a good model to resemble the earth is that it has 4 layers that are similar to Earth's layers. The yolk of the egg is similar to the Inner core and Outer core of the Earth because the yolk is at the center of the egg just like the core in the Earth. Also, the egg white resembles the mantle because the egg white is the layer outside of the yolk just like the egg white is outside of the Inner and Outer core. Lastly, the shell of the egg resembles the crust of Earth because the shell of the egg is the outermost layer just like the crust on Earth. The crust on Earth is also hard like the shell on the egg.

2: Another reason why the egg is a good model to resemble the Earth is because the egg's shell and egg white (crust and mantle) have similar texture to the Earth's crust and mantle. The "crust" of the egg is thin and hard, and the Earth's crust is also thin and hard. The "mantle" of the egg is thick like paste just like the Earth's mantle, which is also described as thick like paste. (The core is not very similar though, because the egg's "core" is mushy, yet Earth's Outer core is made up of liquid metals and the Inner core is made up of solid metals).

3: The final reason why the egg is a good model to resemble Earth is because the layers of the egg (yolk, egg white, and shell) are proportionate in size to the layers of the Earth. The crust is the thinnest layer of the Earth and the shell is the thinnest layer of the egg. Also, the Earths core (including Inner and Outer) takes up the most space in the Earth just like the yolk takes up the most space in the egg. The egg white is thicker than the shell, but not as

Li* 00 Back)

thick as the yolk. This is the same with the move at all. Where the "asthenosphere" is, mantle, which is thicker than the crust, but no convection currents are there. The egg not as thick as the core. can't move, because there is no heat source

in the egg so the egg can't get heated or cooled, which is essential for convection to

These are 3 reasons why I think the egg is a happen. good model for resembling the Earth.

hese are 3 reasons why I think the egg is a ad model for resembling the Earth.

INACURATE THINGS ABOUT MODEL

What's not accurate about this model is that the eggs shell is overall smooth. The crust of the

earth, which the egg shell represents, is actually bumpy and unleveled. For example the earth contains

continental crust and ocean crust. Continental crust is about 40-70 km thick, while oceanic crust is about

7 km thick. There are also mountains, valleys and many other geological features that make the earth's

crust unleveled and bumpy.

Another inaccurate representation of this model is that the egg white of the egg, which

represents the mantle, is a different texture than the earth's actual mantle. The earth's mantle had a

consistency of hot tar or a thick paste, while the egg white is solid, smooth, and slightly squishy or

cushiony. Because the earth's mantle is not solid, the crust of the earth does not stay still and the

mantle causes it to move around. The egg white of the egg does not cause the egg shell to move around.

The last inaccurate representation of the egg model is that the earth actually has four layers; the

first is the crust, than the mantle than the outer core and the inner core. The outer core is what's

missing in the egg. The outer core is an all liquid layer that the inner core floats and rotates in. In fact no

parts of the egg are completely liquid. The egg only shows three of the four layers; the crust, mantle and

inner core.

Under the earth's crust the mantle is made up of less dene objects, and the core is made up of

denser objects, like iron. The same thing happens in an egg. In a raw egg the egg yolk is denser than the

egg white. Since hard boiling it doesn't change the mass or volume the egg white stays less dense than

the yolk. The yolk accurately represents the core in that it is denser than the egg white which represents

the mantle.

While examining the egg, I found that the shell contained slight cracks that separated the egg

shell into many different sections. The earth's crust is also cracked into many different sections. But

these cracks are known as tectonic plates. Though the egg shell's cracks may not be as deep as the

earth's crust, they are nevertheless cracks. The

In the egg the further out the layers, the thinner the layers are. The same thing occurs in the

earth's layers. The crust, which is the furthest layer from the core, is the thinnest layer of the earth.

Then comes the mantle, which is thicker than the crust but thinner than the core. Finally comes the core

which is the thickest layer of all.
