President’s UpdateHello All! Welcome to the May 2020 Edition ofCoastal Views.Firstly, it is with a heavy heart that I must informreaders that Life Member Kevin Hutton, has sadlypassed away on the 29th of April from cancer.

Kevin served as Secretary and President ofABRA over the years and had also been Editor ofCoastal Views for many years. On page 4 of thisedition, you will find an obituary from previousSecretary Narelle Looker, who worked alongsideKevin on ABRA for many years. My heartfeltcondolences to his wife and family.I’d like to thank the community for the receptionwe received after our last edition, and for thepatience from everyone as it wasn’t uploadedonline as early as we would have liked. On my morning walk around our beautifulbeachside town, I noticed our weather is nowturning colder and wetter, as is illustrated on thismonth’s cover. This serves as a timely reminderto drivers to take extra care on our roads. The second thing that took me by surprise was tosee the price of petrol. It was only two monthsago the unleaded petrol peaked over $1.60 perlitre and yet this week stations in Aldinga haddipped to as low as $0.79 per litre. As we getused to social distancing and continuingrestrictions (albeit somewhat relaxed) it would bea welcome relief for many who are finding it hardwith finances right now.I was also touched recently by the spirit of ourcommunity in our commitment to rememberANZAC day, in these uncertain times and moregenerally how the community has come togetherto support each other. Our past Editor and Producer have both helpedwith contributions this month, thanks to Kerrodand Tony for those. I enjoy receiving contributionsfrom across our community and it is a huge partof why we publish Coastal Views. This edition also includes updates on a range ofissues, topics and information. I hope you enjoyreading it. For those who like stories about cutedogs see pages 26 & 27 for our two-page specialon the School for Dogs Aldinga Bay Inc.Please stay safe, informed and wash your hands.I hope you enjoy this edition of Coastal Views.Joshua ReiterPresident, Aldinga Bay Residents Association

    Vale Kevin Hutton

When I first came to Aldinga Beach in 2012,one of the first things I read was the latestcopy of Coastal Views. At the time KevinHutton had already been Editor for a coupleof years.

Among the interesting articles and adverts oflocal companies, I noticed information aboutthe Residents Association meeting to takeplace in the weeks ahead. This would be thefirst time I would meet Kevin Hutton.

Over the coming years, I would occasionallyattend these Residents Associationmeetings, chaired by Kevin and found hispassion for the community awe-inspiring. Inever imagined I would have the privilege ofone-day taking on the mantel for bothCoastal Views and the ResidentsAssociation.

Kevin’s involvement with ABRA stretchesback right to its foundation in 1977, he hadserved in many positions including Secretaryand President. Over 43 years Kevin’s workfor ABRA has cemented its reputation as thevoice of Aldinga Bay Residents.

While Kevin’s involvement in ABRA alone isincredible, he had a long list of other roles over his77 years, ranging from Teacher, Bus Driver,Business Owner and School Counsellor to namejust a few.

Kevin had a keen interest in both Motor Sports andin our local Football club, volunteering on for theclub as a proud parent for many years.

Kevin was also involved with Friends of AldingaScrub since its inception and held the position ofLieutenant with the Aldinga Beach CFS where hehas been a member for over 4 decades. He spentcountless hours of many years volunteering for theAldinga Community Centre in various ways.

Kevin’s achievements over his life could fill an entireedition of Coastal Views in itself, his passing leavesa huge hole in our community.

On behalf of the ABRA Committee, I would wish topass on my condolences to his wife Kay and theirfamily.

Rest in Peace Kevin Hutton 1943-2020

    - Joshua Reiter, Current President of ABRA

It is with sadness that we farewell a good friend and teacher inKevin Leonard Hutton.

Kevin passed away on Wednesday 29 April 2020 following a short illnessleaving behind his loving wife Kay, their children and their grandchildren.

He taught many children at the Aldinga Primary School, and was deeplyinvolved in the local Country Fire Service achieving the honour of a LifeMembership. Following his retirement he owned and operated AldingaComputer Enterprises.

From there Kevin stepped into the teaching role again, this time with computerlessons at the Aldinga Community Centre. He was an ardent history buff of theAldinga area and often conducted bus tours for the Aldinga Community Centre.

Kevin was on of the inaugural members of the Aldinga Bay ResidentsAssociation and was recognised in a Life Membership. He held severalcommittee positions over the years and edited and collated their monthlyCoastal Views. He retired from all committees and clubs a few years ago toconcentrate on his home and family, but did not forget to follow the progress ofhis beloved groups.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Kay and family at this time.Vale Kevin, we shall miss you.- Narelle Looker, Former Secretary of ABRA

Aldinga to Willunga ‘Cycleway’ progressThanks to submissions from the community, theOnkaparinga Council has received $150,000 fromthe State Government’s “Fund My Neighbourhood”program to look at options for a much needed‘cycleway’ between Aldinga and Willunga.

While there is no funding set aside for the projectyet, three options have been considered. Theseoptions are shown on the map from the Council’swebsite shown to the right.

All options would cost a significant amount ofmoney but would improve safety for riders, pedestrians and vehicles alike and could alsoprovide an important link to the future Aldingaschool, the township and Sports Complex.

Coastal Views will update readers on the progressof this proposal.

Butterworth Mill on Flour Mill RoadButterworth Mill is located in section 240 near Bayliss Road, on the south side of the old AldingaRoad (now Flour Mill Road), that once connected Port Willunga with Willunga. It was built as the Co-operative Company’s flour-mill by George Sara shortly after he arrived in July 1848. It was purchasedshortly after completion by Joseph Butterworth who already owned section 240. The chimney-stackwas originally seventy feet high and there was a three-story mill house.

Joseph Butterworth was born in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England in about 1802. Aged about 21years, he married Alice Broadbent (1803-1855) at St. Chad’s Church in Broadbent on 2 Nov 1823.Joseph, aged 38 years, was described as a laborer, wool-cleaner and farmer when he arrived with hiswife Alice and their eight children on 9 March 1840 aboard Baboo from Liverpool, England. Theyeventually had ten children (8 boys and 2 girls).

Joseph and his family were resident in Aldinga (White’s Valley) probably by 1841 and he was grantedsection 240 (80 acres) in 1846. By 1853 section 240 was described as having a flour mill and fourcottages and Joseph was described as a miller of Aldinga. His sons John (from about 1850), Bramley(from about 1858) and William (from about 1862) along with Joseph, his wife and their youngerchildren probably lived in these cottages and several sons worked in the flour mill.

Joseph Butterworth, with his sons Eli and John, ran successful flour milling enterprises throughout theFleurieu Peninsula during the 1850s and 1860s then on the Yorke Peninsula from the 1870s. After thedeath of his first wife Alice, aged 52 years, in 1855, Joseph, aged 53, married for the second time towidow Sarah Bradbury (formerly Beresford) aged 34 years, on 25 Sept 1855. She already had adaughter from her marriage to Thomas Beresford and they had another two daughters. JosephButterworth, aged 73 years, died on 23 Dec 1875 at his residence at Aldinga.

Image 1 – Brass band (probably the Ancient Order of Foresters band) outside the Butterworth Mill (c.1870) (Courtesy of the State Library of South Australia B55417/253)

Butterworth Mill was probably operated for nearly sixty years by two generations of the Butterworthfamily - Joseph Butterworth (1848-1875) and his youngest son Brant (1875-1905). Butterworth Millwas partially demolished in 1905 and section 240 was then sold to John James Chenoweth, farmer ofSellicks Hill. The remnant buildings were subsequently used as farm outbuildings.

The ruins of Butterworth Mill can still be seen and are on the City of Onkaparinga’s local heritage list(#5552).

‘An Anzac Day with a difference’ by Josh ReiterGrowing up with Grandparents who served inwars overseas, ANZAC day was something Iwas raised to respect. The importance ofmarking this day every year and making surethat the memories and virtues of those whofought for our freedom were not lost as the yearswent on.

All through school leading up to ANZAC day wewould talk in class about the importance of theirsacrifices and how it meant we could learn in ourschools and play in the playground withoutneeding to worry about our safety or security.

After finishing school, the annual educationalchats were swapped with attending dawnservices at the local War Memorial, with the coldfrosty gathering and the quiet moment ofreflection while the Last Post is played on theBugle.

This morning at a few minutes before six o’clock,Aldinga and indeed the rest of Australia reflectedthe significance of this day in a vastly differentway. With streets of people standing in theirdriveways playing the Last Post through theirdevices, not being able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder or watching a few dignitaries attendceremonies on our TV screens.

I am proud that this virus didn’t stop ourcommunity from remembering this importantday. It reflected the resilience, creativity andrespect of our community and our country.

Above all, I was incredibly surprised and gratefulthat on Friday, I received in my letterbox, a smallknitted poppy with “Lest We Forget” written on acard attached to it. Even in this period ofisolation, we are finding ways to keep connectedand think of our fellow community members.

I hope you all had a chance to remember andreflect in your own way, and I look forward toreturning to our usual traditions in 2021.

Trauma on Kids -Rebekha SharkieMy eldest son was just a toddler on 11 September2001.

In just weeks he would become a big brother.

In readiness for the huge change, Edwardreceived a special wooden train set from hisgrandparents.

Heavily pregnant and struggling to move, thisprovided a bit of respite for me as well.

The train set occupied hours of Edward’s time. The track weaved under the coffee table andaround the chairs, new designs and landscapeswere made daily.

Edward loved trains and planes. When we wereout we would stop and count the carriages oftrains passing by.

Sometimes I would take him to the airport so hecould watch them land and take off.

His face would be glued to the glass for hours, inawe of the majestic machines.

Like most households, the television was on in thebackground during 11 September 2001.

I was particularly anxious to hear news from myfamily in the United States. One of the planeswent down perilously close to my family.

The weeks went by and life eventually returned tonormal.

A new normal for all of us, as we lived withincreased security, a new vigilance andrecognition that terrorism was an ever-presentthreat in our lives.

Several months later, when out pushing the pramwith my new baby, I realised that my cheeky littletwo-year-old who loved trains and planes wastraumatised by the September 11 tragedy.

As a plane flew above us in the clear blue-sky,Edward screamed and hid under my dress.

This was his reaction to planes flying above forseveral months.

I realised that while I thought he was busy with hisnew train set, the vision of the planes crashinginto the Twin Towers deeply affected him.

As a mum I felt so guilty. I felt that I had failed toprotect him.

From that moment on I made a conscious effort tothink about exposure to traumatic events, and theeffects this may have, and to do all I can toprovide a level of protection and support.

We now find ourselves in a new, scarier version ofSeptember 11.

It is a time of fear and trauma for all of us. Ourworld has changed as we know it and it iscontinuing to change daily.

We are not yet through this time of crisis but, someday, the fear will be replaced again withhappiness.

In the meantime, we must do what we can thoughto minimise the vicarious trauma felt by childrenand young people through this time.

Now I have a noisy home of young people. Loudmusic blasts from bedrooms, constant activitybuzzing from all corners of the house.

Even though they are no longer young children, with my husband, we are making a consciouseffort to ensure we sit together at the table eachnight with no background noise and talk about atleast one good thing each that happened to usthat day.

We are honest with our feelings, debrief about theworld around us and support each other.

There are a range of supports for children andyoung people as we live through this traumatictime together.

The Wild South GroupWhat a whirlwind these last few months havebeen. Late last year The Wild South was honouredto formally join the Great Australian BightAlliance. Then in November we held the livelyfundraiser Clothes Swap for Climate. This wasfollowed by our workshop called ClimateFeelings: Clearing our Minds to Shape theFuture we Want, and later a beachside eventcalled Waves of Peace. In January wesupported the KI Bushfire Relief Concert at CooeeArthouse.

And then in February, almost out of the blue, wereceived the fantastic news that Equinor hadabandoned its plans to drill for oil in the GreatAustralian Bight. It was a very emotional dayknowing that finally we could celebrate and relaxknowing that this imminent threat to our coast andall the marine life was gone. But of course, we'llcontinue to campaign for the Bight to be fullyprotected with heritage status.

Two planned local music fundraising events inAldinga and Goolwa, Bands for the Bight and

Unite for the Bight, have been postponed. Wedid make a submission to the review ofAustralia’s nature laws, something that happensonly once in a decade. With crises such asdeforestation, extinctions and the recentbushfires The Wild South would really love tosee laws that fully protect our natural world. Wehave still been meeting online, and would loveto invite any of you interested in gettinginvolved with us to an open meeting once weare able to meet face to face again.

With all the recent changes due to CIVID 19 wereally have a unique opportunity to emerge intoa better world for all of humanity and the naturalworld. Take care in these challenging times andwe would love to connect with you face to facein the not too distant future. In the meantime,we'd love to hear from you. Community leaders and people across Australia arespeaking out against anti-Asian racism in the wakeof the COVID-19 Crisis, and Aldinga Bay is noexception.

Joshua Reiter, President of the Aldinga BayResidents Association, was disappointed to readreports in the national media of Chinese bornAustralians being targeted.

“I was very pleased to see our Prime Minister, ScottMorrison, speak out explicitly against coronavirus-related racism,” said Joshua.

    See: https://www.sbs.com.au/news/stop-it-scott-morrison-calls-for-an-end-to-coronavirus-related-racism?fbclid=IwAR3WPpjEhtAF92TZa8Igr2g9jJjMkPEyNUg-1cM8HTkR9kwPZ88xDmu7Q9g

“Like the PM, I think it’s up to all of us to ‘call out’that sort of thing. It's not Australian, and it’s not on,”he said.

Joshua is urging locals to speak out against racism,to “call it out” when they see it.

“While I understand that people are afraid of beingtargeted themselves, or have the belief that it’ssomeone else’s responsibility, many people areslow to speak out when they see instances ofracist, sexist, homophobic or other anti-socialbehaviour happening around them.” Joshua said.

    Other local community leaders agree.

Federal MP for Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie, said:“What we do know from watching the pandemicunfold overseas is that COVID-19 does notrecognise borders and people of all nations are atrisk. There is no place for racism.

“Our community has great heart and what I seelocally and across South Australia is all of usworking together constructively to significantlyreduce the risk of COVID-19.”

    for those who are isolated or whose livelihoodsare threatened, give courage and hope;

for all who take difficult decisions, fromgovernments to health practitioners, givewisdom and compassion to accompany theknowledge and experience that they bring.

School for Dogs Aldinga Bay Inc

We are a not for profit dog school, run by the communityfor the community, in the interest of the dog.We would not be able to run at all without the hard workand commitment of our valued volunteers. If you areinterested in volunteering at school on Sunday mornings, please contact us via our website or Facebook page. Wealso run a fantastic assistant trainer program which takesaround a year and provides the opportunity to then moveon to being a trainer with your own class and the possibilityof finance assisted access towards professionalqualifications in dog training.

We also have really fun agility sessions which help build the bond between you and your dog, onceyou have completed bronze and your dog is over 1 years of age they can try the full agility course, until they the instructors can provide some low impact agility activities for your dog.Sadly, we have had to close due to current government social distancing restrictions, but we are allhoping to get back out there, running classes soon, check our website or Facebook page for updates.

A brief overview of what we offer at our friendly and relaxed SchoolBronze Certificate in Companion Dog Training (your local council may offera rego discount once your dog has achieved Bronze (aka level 3)Silver and Gold Certificate and Skills Maintenance trainingAgility classes and Rally 'O' (a fun way of practicing skills with your dog)At School for Dogs Aldinga Bay we use force free training methods(positive re-enforcement) using praise and treats to rewardwanted behaviour. Class sizes are kept small to avoid overcrowding, usually between 8 to 10 dogs per class.

Courses run for 8 weeks for up to an hour (weather permitting). We run four terms per year on Sunday mornings. We also run two terms on Tuesday evenings duringdaylight saving.During the term obstacle awareness may be taught giving your dog an opportunity to try out itemsthat make up the agility course, this will be taught by our agility instructors.

“We are very grateful for the grantsfrom both ABRA & Bendigo Bankto assist with the huge outlay forthe trailer that our Head AgilityTrainer, Mario built for us.”

    - Bernice Wuttke

Did you know that there has been a Dog Training Club atSymonds Reserve for 40 years. In 1996, the name for the dogtraining club became School for Dogs Aldinga Bay.

At that time, Carole Husein was the Head Trainer with manyyears of experience behind her.

The style of training was completely changed from Forceful toPositive Reinforcement Training.

It was the first Club to do so in Adelaide and is still run entirelyby Volunteers.

Amazing isn’t it? That is a lot of history, a lot of tales (and tails)and many dogs trained to be better canine citizens

My association with School for Dogs started when I joined theClub in 2005.

I have trained 3 dogs there. My Kelpie Cola was part of theDemonstration Team for 7 years. - Bernice Wuttke
