President’s Message Greetings, fellow-CIR members, There’s so much coming up on the calendar this year you’re going to have a time of it choosing which ones to attend! Nice problem for us car club members to have, right?

The e-blasts from Member Chair, Randy Faunce and Bob Snider, Historian, will keep you up-to-date on events like car tours, breakfasts, track events and more, but there’s one very important event coming up that I wanted to personally bring to your attention. That is, the Artomobilia event in Carmel, Indiana. This year, on August 24, CIR will play a bigger part than ever before, thanks to John Leonard, CIR member and Artomobilia event manager. John heard that the CruZionsville event was no more when CruZionsville Chairperson Steve Tarr and his wife, Alice, retired last year. John wanted to give CIR the opportunity to ‘replace CruZionsville in spirit’ by giving us Rangeline Road in Carmel, Indiana to line with Porsches. This a bigger presence than any one car marque has held at Artomobilia to-date. But that’s not all: he’s releasing the funds from regis-tered Porsche owners to the Indiana Alzheimer’s Asso-ciation’s research arm just as we did with CruZionsville. Now, to keep the dream alive, we need cars. Ideally, many fine examples in many categories, as has been Artomobilia’s tradition. Registration is now open at https://artomobiliaweeked.com/artomobilia A few CIR mem-bers are already registered! We have time (registrations will be taken until August 3), but the sooner the better for organizers to assess classes of Porsches to group-for-show. At this point, start thinking about which Porsche(s) you want to register! And the next step, of course, might be, is a tune-up or spruce-up needed for entries to be show-ready?

On the cover The Wayne Baker Racing GTO Class Porsche 934 during the wet and sloppy 1983 IMSA Lumberman’s 6 Hour Race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, June 19, 1983. Drivers Wayne Baker (USA), Jim Mullen (USA), and Kees Neirop (CDN) eventually finished 24th. They had a much better outing in that year’s Sebring 12 Hour classic, finishing 1st overall in a stunning upset victory! Photo by Jim Legault “Just a short hello” photos by Rob Fike

CIR will be doing its own judging in what John calls the-event-within-an-event, Porsche Palooza. We’ll let reg-istrations guide us on appropriate categories to in-clude for awards. The CruZionsville contact list we received from Steve includes a list of last year’s registrants and volunteers; they’ll be contacted soon from the PCA e-mailer. Region Presidents who attended the Zone 4 Presi-dent’s meeting in February will be invited, too. And, because we’ve had representatives come down from Chicago to attend CIR car shows, a call-out to Zone 13 will be sent to build up participation. There will be plenty of volunteers needed, as there were with CruZionsville. Don’t be shy! Let us know you’re on-board, car owners and CruZionsville volun-teers, and we’ll find a spot for you. There will be park-ing, judging, registration coordination, and day-of-event volunteer needs, to name but a few. Please join us for a great show for a great cause! It’s still so true, as PCA founder William Jessup Sholar fa-mously said, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people…this is what Porsche is all about…” You, CIR members, have an opportunity to show us the love and help us celebrate both the cars and the people! Let’s make this one to remember! Please contact me at [email protected]

Around the Zone By Lori Schutz

Hi Zone 4,

The month of February for me was back to back administrative PCA meetings across

the country.

The weekend of Feb 9-10th, I was in Seattle, Washington for the National Staff Meetings. Why Seattle

you ask? And on the weekend of the epic 100-year snow storm that virtually stopped the city? Who

knew!! I was lucky that I got in before the snow started, and flew home before the 2nd wave hit. The

weekend included an afternoon and morning of the Zone Reps having time with many of the National

Staff Chairs as well as the Executive Council, followed by the annual National Staff Assembly. The pro-

fessional staff at National PCA HQ continues to grow with the addition of a Marketing and Membership

Chair, Jim Hemig, and Digital Architect Robert Forsyth. Look for major changes to the PCA.ORG web-

site coming later this year.

Then the next weekend I was in Dallas, Texas for the PCA Club Racing All Hands meeting. Many of you

are aware, I also serve as a National Scrutineer for the Club Race program. I was joined by most of the

Scrutineer team, all of the Stewards and the Timing and Scoring teams. We discussed new program

changes, rules changes and overall strategies to grow and improve the program. We have a few new

technology tricks to use to evaluate correct engine compression specifications. Oh boy!

The next weekend I was in Toledo, Ohio, for the Zone 4 Presidents meeting, and Driver Education Plan-

ning Meeting. We were joined by our National PCA President-Tom Gorsuch. Also with us was the Na-

tional DE Chair- John Krecek and National Awards Chair - Michael Soriano. Thanks to Chip Henderson

for sharing the story of how Mid Ohio became 2017 region of the year. 11 regions were represented

out of the 12, and we had a packed agenda with remote participation from National Marketing and

Membership Chair- Jim Hemig, National Autocross Chair Kathy Thorp, and PorschePlatz queen Lynn

Friendman. We reviewed the highlighted region events for 2019 in the Zone, – please check your cal-

endars for these dates and check the region websites and newsletters for details:

Allegheny – Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix – July 19-21

Central Indiana – Automobilia Charity event August 24

Eastern Buckeye – Falling Water Frank Lloyd Wright Home Tour July 20

Meeting at noon with Sunday Auto Tour to Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum for their annual “History in Bloom” event.

Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum’s “History in Bloom” - What is “History in Bloom” you ask? Once a year in the spring, Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum (2nd largest cemetery in US) has a special event where docent guides dress up as some of the more famous “residents” of their historic 150 yr. old cemetery.

After Spring Grove, we venture down to Taft’s Ale

House for a late lunch at 2 pm in an amazing old German church. Located in the Over-the-Rhine Historic District. it has been converted into a brewpub with great beers and food (try the tri-tip steak sandwich!). Register for the Auto Tour & Chart House Dinner at: https://clubregistration.net/events/signUp.cfm/event/9762. 2019 SPRING BRAKE DRIVERS EDUCATION AT PUTNAM PARK

APRIL 26 -APRIL 28

Sponsored by TOM WOOD PORSCHE

CIRcular | 2019

CIRPCA Spring Brake Driver Education Click here to Register via ClubRegistration.net

The Central Indiana Region of the Porsche Club of America is pleased to announce an exciting 3 day track event at the newly repaved Putnam Park Road Course, in Mt. Meridian, IN, on Friday – Sunday, April 26 – 28, 2019. Saturday and Sunday will be a traditional Driver Ed program, open to drivers of all levels, driving any make of vehicle, from 1st time track drivers thru ad-vanced drivers.

Friday will feature open lapping for advanced drivers (those who have been cleared to run in a solo run group for a previous event).

Putnam Park has always been a great track for both novices and advanced drivers, but 2019 should be es-pecially exciting because Putnam Park experienced some small pavement issues in 2018 with the last re-pave and because of this, has recently undergone AN-OTHER COMPLETE REPAVING OF THE ENTIRE TRACK!

In 2018, participants noticed far less tire wear than the previous surface. In addition, wet weather traction is outstanding!

Friday, April 26th will be open for any advanced driv-ers, who have previously driven in either the Instruc-tor, A or B groups with CIRPCA, or other advanced driv-ing groups in other organizations, who do not require an Instructor.

We anticipate between 3 – 4 hours of open track time for these advanced drivers. What a great way to en-hance your skills, with lots of time on a less crowded track!

As always, our Saturday and Sunday DE event, features lots of track time, along with classroom training, to ensure everyone goes home a better driver.

It is open to all licensed drivers, 18 and over, driving

any make vehicle.

Membership in PCA is not a requirement! Instructors will be provided for all drivers at the beginning or nov-ice levels.

As always, participating vehicles require the completion of a Technical Inspection form by a qualified mechanic (inspected and signed no early than 30 days prior to the event) before presenting the vehicle at the track for final inspection.

Final on-site tech inspection will be available on Friday morning at the track, and again Saturday morning at the track.

Drivers must bring their completed and signed tech forms to one of the onsite tech inspections. Tech forms are available on the registration website and also on the CIRPCA website by clicking on the Driver Ed icon. More details will be posted at a later time.

NEW PCA REQUIREMENT FOR 2019 – regarding 5 and 6 point harnesses and HANS devices.

New for PCA DE events for 2019, if a car is using 5 or 6 point harnesses, the driver and potentially any instruc-tor or student passenger, must be using an appropriate HANS device and HANS equipped helmet.

The Chief Instructor will make sure that instructors as-signed to student vehicles with harnesses have the ap-propriate equipment.

If you are signing ups and your vehicle has 5 or 6 point harnesses, please be aware that you will be asked to show your HANS equipment at the onsite tech inspec-tion.

Student Registration: Registration is via www.clubregistration.net. Search for Putnam Park events, and the dates of April 27-29.

If you are new to Club Registration, you will first need to establish an account (no cost), and create a personal

profile, which includes your relevant driving experienc-es.

The event fees are as follows: Cost for the 3 day event (advanced drivers) is $600. Cost for the Saturday – Sunday event for all students is $425.

CIRPCA Approved Instructors may register for Saturday and Sunday for $125. One day may be purchased for $250.

Instructor Registration: Anyone registering to instruct must be an approved CIRPCA instructor. Questions here can be directed to the registrar.

There may be some time Friday and during the week-end to evaluate and coach advanced drivers that may be interested in instructing in the future.

Anyone interested can please reach out to our Chief Driving Instructor – Doug DeArmond at [email protected].

Helmets: Only Snell certified helmets, carrying a 2010 or 2015 sticker, will be allowed. A limited number of rental helmets are available, via the clubregistration website at $65 for the entire weekend.

Garage Rental: a limited number of single bay spaces are available for $150 for the entire weekend. All garag-es are 1st come, 1st served, and may be reserved via Clubreg. Vehicles can be left in the garage for the week-end and there is power & compressed air available.

Host Hotel: The host hotel will be the Holiday Inn – Cloverdale. A block of rooms has been reserved under the code “PCA”

for this weekend (Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights) with the discounted rate of $114.99. To reserve your room, contact the Holiday Inn:

Holiday Inn Express 1017 N Main Street Cloverdale, IN 46120 T: 765-795-5050

Onsite Tech inspection will be available Thursday evening at the Holiday Inn Express.

Details and timing to follow. Onsite tech will continue Fri-day at the track and Saturday morning for weekend only participants.

Cars can be left at the track Friday for the weekend, so if you are attending Saturday and Sunday you can make things easier on yourself by coming Friday before track shutdown and completing your registration and tech in-spection!

Just a short hello everyone! Rob and Judy Fike here from the CIRPCA southern-most outpost in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Having withdrawal from driving activities, we joined some members of the Sonnenschein Region for a driv-ing tour on February 9th. (SONPCA) This tour has not only some beautiful Porsches, but actually ALL area car clubs are invited to come out, and it’s huge! As you can see from the pictures, there are cars of every flavor. Even a lookalike for our Ocean Blue 996 cab. The parking area was full of great machines. Ford GT, Jaguars, Mercedes Bens, VW’s, MG’s, Mustangs, Corvettes, etc., etc.

We started on the north side of Pensacola, Florida, made about a 50-mile drive through the countryside going back and forth over the Florida/Alabama state line numerous times. I didn’t know there were any hills in the Florida panhandle. There are!

Great curvy roads, good pavement. Of course, we were doing some “spirited” driving. For our part we’re driving Judy’s Ford Taurus Wagon. Not exactly sporty. But I found that we could hang with the Porsches better than one of the guys in a Mustang. Go figure. The tour ended at Ed’s Catfish House in Atmore, Ala-

bama. As they can seat over 250 it worked great. The food was heavenly! I ate way too much for lunch, so I’ll just have to diet more tomorrow.

That’s all for now, can’t wait to see everyone next month.
