The rainy season will be approaching in late May and early June and it is important that our permits for creating a larger weir and re-design of our drainage system for Cascades be approved by the South Florida Water Management District. We are awaiting this approval so that our engineering firm can make the appropriate recommendations and oversee this very important project. It is expected that this work will begin sometime during the month of April. Your Board of Directors will also be working closely with the Village of Estero to make sure that the cleanout of the ditches along the railroad and walls of our community are completed to enable adequate flow of water. The Village of Estero is still negotiating with the Railroad to purchase this property and hopefully they will be successful in their negotiations. It will be very important for all of you to stay apprised of the plans for the proposed changes that will be made to Estero Parkway. Later this month there will be two important Council Meetings that include the presentation by JR Evans Engineering for Water Management and Drainage throughout the Village of Estero and Mr. Jon McLain’s proposal for changes on Estero Parkway. Our Board of Directors wrote a follow-up letter to the Village Council re-confirming our opposition to the roundabout in front of our community. The replacement of trees and bushes has begun in the common areas in the front of homes as needed. Dakota is currently up to date with most all work orders with the exception of the replacement of sod. They have been working diligently to repair reported problems with our aging sprinkler system. We are asking residents to please fill out a work order or call Nanette in the office if you are aware of any problems with any of our sprinklers not working properly. We would really appreciate your help with this, especially since we will be installing new sod to replace sod in areas where needed. Richard Smith will be applying one more application of fertilizer to the lawns prior to the May 1 st deadline when we are no longer permitted by the State of Florida to fertilize due to the danger of chemical contamination of our water supply. We are beginning our sod replacement on Cascades Isle which needs a great deal of new sod, and will be working along the Lismore, Ballylee, and Castlemaine areas with the first load of sod. This is anticipated to begin on April 17 th . We will be focusing on sod replacement in the front of homes where there is no hope the current sod to come back. Sod replacement will take place in sections of the community on a schedule to be provided by Dakota Landscaping. For those of you who may not know, Linda Yasi, our Community Association Manager, has resigned from her position with us and from Southwest Properties Management. Linda will be moving on to another position that will provide her with greater financial security and more responsibility. Linda is very excited about this new opportunity and on behalf of the Board of Directors and our Community, we wish her the very best in her new position. Linda will be extremely hard to replace and her last day with us will be Friday, April 6 th . Her experience as a CAM is something that we will obviously be looking for in her replacement. We will be using the same process that our Association has always utilized when all previous Community Association Managers have been replaced. Candidates for her position will be recommended by Southwest Properties Management and then interviews will be conducted by three members of the Board of Directors. The interview committee will then make a recommendation to the entire Board of Directors for approval. In closing, some of our residents will be leaving before the next issue of our Gazette and we hope that all have a safe return to their summer destinations….wherever that may be. We will look forward to renewing and revitalizing our friendships when you return in the fall. Remember to stay connected through the website and your e-mail, and we will do our best to stay connected with blasts to the community to keep everyone informed about summer activities here at Cascades. What Makes Us Tick! submitted by Sandy Geoffroy

Bingo can be traced back to 1530 to an Italian lottery called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia." This game is still played on Saturday night in Italy. From Italy it was introduced to France in the late 1770's, where it was called "Le Lotto." When the game reached North America in 1929, it was known as "Beano." It was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia where New York town salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it "Bingo." It was purely by mistake that someone yelled Bingo instead of Beano. Mr. Lowe hired Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, to help increase the number of combinations in the normal bingo card. By 1930,

Leffler had invented 6,000 different combinations. In 1934, there were 10,000 bingo games played in the U.S. weekly. In prohibition time Bingo was not illegal because the Catholic Church had funded bingo and they were non-profit. After success Mr. Lowe sold his company to Milton Bradley in 1973 for $26 billion dollars. Lowe died in 1986. Today, more than $90 million is spent at bingo each week in the United States only. We really don't know what Europeans played bingo for but here at the Cascades we play for good fortune with a big smile! Our winners of the "Red Special" was my "Seestar" Kathy Jones of $150 and the "Black Special" winner of $250 was Frank Dorio. We also had three 50/50 winners of $75, $50 and $50 respectively. It was a very good night. Our last bingo of the season is here and will held on April 8th starting at 6:30pm with doors opening at 5:45pm. We hope to see you there with that Cascades smile and a friend!

St. Patrick’s Day Davis Cup Tournament

As sunny St. Patrick's Day dawned on March 17th, Cascades famous

(and infamous) tennis players arrived at our courts to compete in the 2nd Annual Davis Cup Tournament. Our Tennis Pro, Manny Encalada, organized yet another wonderfully successful tournament. Soon racquets were swinging, legs were racing, and

spectators were cheering. The four Davis Cup Teams were: Tennis the Menace, the Spider Gang, the Eagles, and the Raiders. Each team consisted of 6 enthusiastic players. All were victorious, yet ultimately Dave Vaillancourt's "Raiders" triumphed as the

overall Davis Cup Champions! Congratulations to Dave Vaillancourt, Ed Kaliner, Nancy Remis, Jim Remis, Bette Lewchuk and Monika Oswald. Competition and fun were the pot 'o gold; camaraderie and pizza were the reward for all!

Thank you to Author Monika Oswald and Photos Ralph Oswald.

2018 BOCCE BATTLE OF THE SEXES story and photos by Patricia Sheehy

Let’s start at the end this time: The Women took home the trophy, winning the Bocce Battle of the Sexes. Again! It was good-natured competition with participation from more than 150 Cascades Bocce members. Sportsmanship, laughter, and fun were the watchwords of the day as woman turned into cheerleaders and men enthusiastically urged one another to roll the winning ball. Winning, however, was not in the men’s destiny. The best two out of three games won the trophy. And it was a tight competition. The woman captured an early lead, winning the first game; the men surfaced as winners of the second game, setting the stage for a third and final game. The women surged ahead from the start and never looked back, winning for the second year in a row.

Women finalists were Linda Morgano, Sharon Dasbach, Sandy Perry & Annette Parascando; Men finalists were Joe Delano, Ralph Catanese, Adrian Genotti & Joe Pantaleo. Everyone enjoyed a lunch of sandwiches, potato salad, baked beans, pickles, chips and an assortment of cookies and drinks. To finish off the day, there were off-the-court winners, as names were pulled and lucky folks claimed their prizes. Congratulations to our 50/50 winners of $50 each: Tom Borich, Louise Guarascio, Linda Morgano & Ann Marie Cancilla and our lottery ticket winners, each winning a $5 scratch and win ticket with the possibility of winning $250,000: Brenda Stankoski, Louise Guarascio, Carol Morrow, Eileen Devlin, Noel Thomson, Gerry Green, Dwight Jacobs, Carl Fligge, Don Thomson & Charlie Cole. From Bocce president Ernie Hamilton: “I want to thank my fellow Bocce Board members for organizing one the best battle of the sexes tournaments that we have ever had!”

BOCCE BRUNCH The last Bocce brunch of the season was held on Sunday, March 11th and hosted by Cathy and George Cavallo along with their team of member volunteers. A St. Patrick's Day theme of colorful green was seen throughout the ballroom and worn by many of the 139 Bocce members who attended the breakfast. The Hilton Garden Inn catered a delicious egg and sausage casserole along with potatoes and onions and tasty breakfast cakes.

50/50 was won by Diana Genotti $60, Tom Lea $50 and Dale Sayset $50. The two Hilton Garden Inn certificates of $25 each were won by Jim Benning and Skip Johnson. Congratulations to all our winners! Many thanks to Cathy and George and their team of volunteers for another successful Sunday Bocce Brunch! Submitted by Rosemary Planz

MARINER’S DAY TRIP

We boarded a bus at the clubhouse at 8:45 to travel to Myakka River State Park in Sarasota. Upon arrival to the Park we boarded a air boat for an unbelievable ride on the river. The north bank of the river was alligator haven. Seeing so many gators in their natural environment was an adventure that many of us had not experience before. After the boat ride we boarded a Tram for a ride into the center of Myakka Park. During the Tram ride our guide gave us very detail information on the Park and its history. We concluded our day with great meal at Captain Eddies Seafood Restaurant in Nokomis, Fl. What a awesome day! Lynne Troutman

HIGH TEA LUNCHEON
