Early literacy and numeracy are the foundation for
all future development; if these are not developed
fully and equitably in early years, children will not
be able to catch up in later grades, with school texts
becoming more dense and abstract in later primary
grades. Therefore, strengthening the teaching-
learning process of early language and literacy is
crucial. With this conviction LLF came into existence
in 2015 with a specific focus on language and
literacy.

Highlights (April – September 2017) “Prarambhik Bhasha Shikshan Certificate Course-2017 (ELL 2017)” was started with 206
government participants from 5 states – Bihar, Chhattisgarh, U.P., Rajasthan and Haryana.
Three thematic sessions were held with 2 guest speakers - Dr. Shailja Menon and Ms.
Rukmini Banerji and 3 alumni members - Mr. Akhileshwar Prasad Gupta , Ms. Kiran Darolia
and Ms. Pushpa Shukla.
Competitions were organized on online alumni portal – "Bhasha Ki Duniya"
Documentation of good work, practices and initiatives of some of the participants under
“Bhasha Ki Duniya”.
SCERT Chhattisgarh has acknowledged LLF course materials for its Language and Literacy
Trainings.
Alumni 2016 were also a part of the core team on Literacy formed by SCERT Chhattisgarh to
design the EGR materials, training and strategy for the entire course.
A new Short Term Course on Reading Comprehension was launched in September 2017 to
give practice-based specialized knowledge and in-depth understanding of key components
of early language and literacy development.
MOU signed between Government of Haryana and LLF for capacity building of the resource
persons in teaching of Hindi in primary schools.

This 9 month course has been specially designed for
teachers and teacher educators who are associated
with the teaching and learning of Hindi language in
grades 1 to 3.

This forum was started on started on 19th May 2017 and was hosted by 2 LLF mentors and 4 alumni members of 2016 batch:

For this forum LLF had used the Hindi translation of Mexine Berntsen article “English for All - Is it Desirable? Is it Possible?” Participants had to read the article and present their viewpoint based on this reading. Alumni Members who helped in hosting the Discussion Forum:

LLF has hosted 3 Thematic Session/Guests Call. These are audio conferences in which experts from
the field of education (specifically language) are invited to talk on a particular topic. A PPT
prepared by the expert was shared in advance with the selected participant. On the call day the
1st half of the time was spent in the explanation of the PPT and in the 2nd half participants asked
questions directly to the guest speaker /expert. 1st session by Dr. Shailja Menon ( Associate
Professor at Azim Premji University), 2nd session by 3 alumni members - Mr. Akhileshwar Prasad
Gupta , Ms. Kiran Darolia and Ms. Pushpa Shukla and 3rd session by Ms. Rukmini Banerji ( CEO

their experiences on previous modules and
discuss module 6. High level overview for
module 7 was given by Dr. Dhir Jhingran from
LLF.

2. Action Research
Language and Learning Foundation is providing an academic support to its alumini. Five
participants who completed the “Prarambhik Bhasha Shikshan Certificate Course 2016” were
selected for school based action research in Chhattisgarh. Following are the details:

3. LLF Community of Learning and Practices (COLP), Bhasha ki
Duniya
LLF launched a portal named “Bhasha ki Duniya”
which serves as a platform for all the alumni
members of Prarambhik Bhasha Shikshan
Certificate Course to connect with each other
across different states. In the month of
September even the 2017 batch participants
were added to the portal
3.1 April Month was Celebrated as Oral
Language Development (OLD) Month
As an activity to take the learning of the course
forward into the field, the community members
were requested to celebrate the entire month of
April as the OLD month. Participants were asked
to do activities related to OLD with grades 1 – 3
children.
3.2 World Book Day, 23rd April 2017
On the occasion of the World Book Day, 23rd
April, a list of different activities (for participants
to do themselves and with the children) were
shared with the participants and they were
asked to use these activities over the entire
week and share their experience.
3.3 Alumni and Current Batch Face to Face
Experience Sharing Meeting, 17th May,
Chhattisgarh
A meeting of the alumni members and some of
the current 2017 batch of Chhattisgarh was
organised on the 17th May 2017 at Mahasamund
DIET. The meeting was organized with an aim to
share experiences of the old and the current
batch participants and discussing some concepts
of Module 3. The sessions were moderated by
alumni and they shared their practical
experience on using the different principles that
were there in the module 3.

3.5 COLP Competitions and Winners
Summary Writing Competition Summary writing competition was organized in the month of June on module 1 to 4. Around 41 participants participated in this competition and shared their summaries of modules with LLF. Finalists were selected after assessment on three levels.
Song Competition On the occasion of World Music Day 21st June, LLF has organized a song competition with its participants. They were asked to send in the recordings of regional songs or poems that can be used with primary class children

4. Short Term Courses
Short Term Course on Reading Comprehension
Short term course on reading comprehension
was launched on 11th September to better
understand what goes into
developing reading
proficiency in early grades
– including the role and
importance of
background knowledge,
vocabulary etc. It also
provides exposure to a variety
of genres and text structures and gives tips on
how to engage children in effective
comprehension strategies. The first batch of the
course has 95 participants from Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It is
an online course which has self-reading module,
online conference calls with mentors, audio-
visual learning aids and expert sessions.

5. Multilingual Education (MLE)
5.1 Multilingual Education Certificate Course
LLF will be launching a 4 month MLE course on
30th October. This course will be conducted in a
blended mode with components such as self-
study, open book objective exams (OBOE),
conference call, online and face to face
workshops.
5.2 Language Situation Analysis in Mathura,
Uttar Pradesh
Situation Analysis was done to observe 4 – 5
schools in Mathura to understand children’s
language proficiency in Hindi and their home
language called Braj. The findings included
minimum Hindi literacy level among children.
Class 1 children were unable to read and
understand Hindi, except for few words.
5.3 Rajasthan MLE Project
Ma-Badi Centres (MBCs) have been set up
by Tribal Area Development Department
(TAD) of Government of Rajasthan to bring
the tribal children inhabiting remote areas
into the fold of mainstream education. .
Since these children have a different home
language, they face a strong disadvantage in
learning through Hindi. This is a pilot project
implementing in 30 Ma-Badi centers of two
districts (Banswada and Dungarpur) of
Rajasthan in the partnership of TAD,
UNICEF, LLF and CULP.

LLF and Government of Haryana MOU
LLF signed its first MOU on 9th August 2017 with Government of Haryana for
intensive three year state intervention. The signing and exchange of MOUs was
done between Dr. Dhir Jhingran (Executive Director, LLF) and Ms. Kalpana (HSSPP)
in the presence of all our current long term course participants.
6. Other Activities
6.1 Partnership of LLF with Haryana School
Shiksha Pariyojana Parishad (HSSPP)
The intervention was initiated with an objective
to Improve conceptual knowledge and skills of
the state and district resource group related to
early language and literacy, improve teaching
learning practice in the early grades in one
district and the adoption of state specific ELL
framework and material state level
implementation.
6.2 Cluster of Academic Coordinators (CACs)
Workshop, 20th – 24th September, Chhattisgarh
LLF has organized a five days Certificate
Workshop from 20th to 24th September on early
language teaching in collaboration with UNICEF
and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). The workshop
was envisioned to develop understanding on
crucial aspects of language and literacy teaching
practices in early classes and their respective
positioning in various theories of learning.
Recognizing existing multiple language teaching
practices in school education, it was designed to
develop a critical and analytical approach
towards various language teaching methods. For
this purpose, comparative method was used for
analyzing existing language teaching practices.

6.3 Workshop on MLE Strategy and Approach,
17th – 19th September, Delhi
LLF has organized a 3 day Workshop to develop
programme framework for early learning with
special focus on situations where children are
coming from different language background.
Ms. Nivedita Bedadur (Azim Premji Foundation),
Dr. Mahendra Mishra (Trustee, LLF), Dr. Dhir
Jhingran (LLF), Mr. Dhuleshwar Raot (Samavesh)
along with other members from LLF
participated in the Workshop. The discussion
was mainly on two language situations. First,
Rajasthan, where children’s home language is
Wagdi but school text is in Hindi. Second,
Mathura, where the target language of the
children is Hindi and their home language is Braj.
6.4 Creation of Videos
6.4.1 Video Recording in Uttar Pradesh, April
2017
Video recording for three days was carried out in
Gorakhpur, UP with our 2016-17 batch course
participant, Ms. Alpa Nigam, Head teacher in
Government Primary school, to shoot strategies
of oral language development, phonological
awareness and logographic reading.
6.4.2 Video recording in Chhattisgarh, May
2017
Video recording for two days was carried out in
Balod, Chhattisgarh with our 2016-17 batch
course participant, Mr. Ishwari Kumar Sinha,
teacher in Government Primary School, to shoot
the strategies involved in vocabulary
development and the use of graphic organizers.
6.4.3 Video Recording in Haryana, August and
September 2017
Video recording for three days was carried out in
Sisana, Haryana with the support of our 2016-17
batch course participant, Ms. Kiran, BRP,
Haryana and Ms. Mamta, teacher, Government
School, to shoot various reading and writing
strategies.
