By John Strauss, interim general manager

They’re a welcome sight around WIPB-TV and Indiana Public Radio: students adding energy to the stations—while adding professional experience to their resumes.

The program guide you’re reading was designed by Brooke Sturgell, a senior majoring in visual communications.

Art classes prepared her to use InDesign and Illustrator, standard tools in publishing. But the education wouldn’t be complete without the practical lessons of her job.

“I love working here,” Brooke said. “It’s the highlight of my day sometimes. I get to do real-life projects for real people.”

Design lets her capture attention, something she’s always wanted.

“I’m not quiet or shy,” she said. “I’m the youngest in a family of four kids—a lot of people yelling all the time —so I’ve always looked for attention. My mom calls me ‘the ham.’”

An example of her work was the poster for IPR’s “The Gift of the Magi” radio drama, featuring a stylized image of a woman and her beautiful hair – a key part of the story.

“I started with color choices. It was for Christmas so I picked teal green and burgundy,” she said.

“Part of being a designer is doing research, so I read the short-story and thought about how I could turn this into art for a poster. It was about a woman and her hair, and giving up her pride for the care of another person.”

She took inspiration from the distinctive style of Alphonse Mucha, a Czech Art Nouveau painter, and from French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec when thinking of

the woman’s long flowing hair.“My work can evoke emotion in ways that I

can’t,” Brooke said. “It lets me channel energy in ways that I otherwise would not be able to.”

The stations are a great place to learn, Brooke said, and she credited Angie

Rapp, her supervisor and marketing manager for the stations, with giving her the chance to grow her skills.

“There’s so much energy. And people here always have a smile on

their face. I hear a lot of laughing.”She graduates in May but is trying not

to think about it.“It’s not that I don’t want to face life, but

I’ve had such a great experience here. Ball State has changed my life.”

Guidance without ‘knocking you down’IPR reporter Michael Kuhn enjoys the technology of broadcasting, but it’s the chance to make a difference that keeps the Ball State sophomore going.

He learned the basics of editing sound and video in his News classes. That was just the start, however.

“The bigger impact I’ve experienced has to do with learning the fundamentals of news and journalism - what makes a good story and how to get the story.”

One of his first assignments developed from the attack at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 12 dead. Michael talked with members of Muslim

Cancer: The Emperor of All MaladiesWednesday, April 1, 9 p.m.

The final episode picks up the story at another moment of buoyant optimism in the cancer world: Scientists believe they have cracked the essential mystery of the malignant cell and the first targeted therapies have been developed. But scientists are undeterred, and by the second decade of the

2000s their work pays off. The bewildering complexity of the cancer cell, so recently considered unassailable, yields to a

more ordered picture, revealing new vulnerabilities and avenues of attack. Perhaps most exciting of all is the prospect of harnessing the

human immune system to defeat cancer.

Wolf Hall on MasterpieceSundays at 10 p.m., through May 10Tony® Award-winning actor Mark Rylance (Twelfth Night) and Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-winner Damian Lewis star in the six-hour television miniseries adapted from Hilary Mantel’s best-selling Booker Prize-winning novels: Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies. The television event presents an intimate and provocative portrait of Thomas Cromwell, the brilliant and enigmatic consigliere to King Henry VIII, as he maneuvers the corridors of power at the Tudor court.

Masterpiece Classic “Mr. Selfridge, Season 3”Sundays at 9 p.m., through May 17

Jeremy Piven (Entourage) stars as London’s retail king, Harry Gordon Selfridge, in Mr. Selfridge, the series hailed as “addicting” by The Wall Street Journal. Season 3, airing Sundays, March 29-May 17, 2015 on MASTERPIECE on WIPB, follows the fascinating rise and fall of this colorful but troubled entrepreneur, and picks up in 1919 just after the end of World War I. Zoë

Wanamaker (My Family, Harry Potter films, Poirot) joins the series cast to play trouble-making Russian Princess, Marie de Bolotoff.

Call The Midwife, Season 4Sundays at 8 p.m., through May 17Inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, CALL THE MIDWIFE follows the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House, who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. In the Season 4 premiere, the community prepares to enter a new decade — the 1960s. A new arrival earns respect after helping a new mother; Trixie faces an emotionally draining case; the Turners broker a domestic deal; and Sister Evangelina agrees to undergo tests for her abdominal pain.

Last Days in Vietnam: American ExperienceTuesday, April 28, 9 p.m.During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. With a communist victory inevitable and the U.S. readying to withdraw, many Americans on the ground worried their South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or death at the hands of the approaching North Vietnamese.

community in Muncie.“I went to the Islamic Center and

interviewed people there about how the media coverage has affected them: how it’s shaped the attitudes of people and affected how Muslims are treated.”

He saw the story as a chance for listeners to hear directly from those touched by the incident.

“That’s what we try to do – give a voice to the voiceless and help them speak their minds.”

The assignment was an education for Michael, who grew up in a conservative Christian home in Warsaw.

“You learn something about how the

world works, doing this job,” he said.“I’m still very strong in my faith, but this

gave me a perspective on another person’s day-to-day life. And it gave me the chance to see some similarities between lifestyles and faith.”

He said the station’s news director and senior producer, Terry Heifetz and Stephanie Wiechmann, have created a good learning environment.

“They do a good job of encouraging you and at the same time showing what you can do better, without knocking you down,” he said.

“It’s good to get that advice on actual work, not just class work.”
