Fleischmanns Then

Making a Living in Fleischmanns…

For many decades, providing local hotels and restaurants with their food to be prepared for guests was much more of a local affair than it is today. Although the growth of the ‘locovore’, farm to table, move-ment is creating renewed interest in locally-sourced food again, regional and national food service compa-nies such as Sysco and Ginsbergs have dominated the market for decades. From the turn of the 20th cen-tury, local vendors provided meat, vegetables, and other food products to the many hotels in the Fleisch-manns area. This post card, printed in Griffin Corners and postmarked 1909, shows how it was done be-fore the advent of the automobile and truck. In later years, local firms still delivered foodstuffs to the ho-tels. Roy Todd tells of working summers in the 1960’s for Clausen’s Farm Stand and delivering food to a number of Fleischmanns hotels, including the St Regis. His route extended as far as Oliverea. The ad is from the Catskill Mountain News in 1964.

Skene Library to Participate .in Seed Swap

Skene Memorial Library is participating in the Delaware Countywide Seed Swap pro-gram, beginning in April and running until the end of May. Those with extra seeds are encouraged to bring them to the Library, where they will be filed alphabetically. Bring in your left over seeds from last year, or earlier this year. Folks are then encour-aged to come and help themselves to some of the seeds, to discover new flowers and vegetables for the garden. By sharing with fellow gardeners, all will benefit; encour-aging people to cul-tivate their gardens will help to spruce up our community.

Maple Fest 2015 Despite the brisk and snowy weather on March 21, the Maple Pancake Breakfast and Maple Bake Off Café brought more than 100 people to Main Street to eat maple inspired pancakes and confections. The Fleischmanns Community Church Maple Pancake Break-fast started serving breakfast at 8am and continued until noon. Over 80 breakfasts were served throughout the morning.

Congratulations to the Blue Ribbon winners of the Maple Bake Off; Laurie Merwin in the traditional category for her Maple Pecan Cheese Cake, Beth Caspar for her Maple Walnut Crostata in the Gluten Free category and Christel Buckholz and Laurie Merwin for their Maple Cream Puffs in the Inter-generational category. The judges, Devon Mills of Peekamoose, Mike Cioffi of Phoenicia Dinner and Mark Birman of Tennis Everyone, were so impressed with Aida Perez’s Maple and Pecan Impossible Cake that they awarded her second prize in the traditional category. Everyone in attendance at the Maple Bake Off had an opportunity to sample all the entries and select their own favorite for which they could bid at the auction. The event was a Fleischmanns First fundraiser, the proceeds from which will go to support future events and programs. Thank you to everyone who volunteered for and participated in these events. A special thanks to La Cabana for hosting the Maple Bake Off!

Meeting Notes Continued….

Main Street Boot Camp- Winifred Zubin reported that the two day conference brought together local representatives of organizations, Village governments, funders and grant mak-ers to discuss Main Street Revitalization. It was inspiring! The fundamental idea is that Main Street Revitalization in-cludes expanding housing for visitors, full time or seasonal residents and setting priorities for initiatives for such revitali-zation.

Fleischmanns Clean Up- In conjunction with NY State I Love MY Park Day. Roxbury is organizing an afternoon clean up in Kirkside Park, followed by a pot luck supper. Winifred suggested that FF organize a clean-up day for Fleischmanns. Kim O’Brien of FAB has offered for Tinderbox to do a bar-becue for all the volunteers.

Village Report- Don Kearney, new Mayor, introduced him-self by giving his background details and timeline of his move to the area. He is concerned about infrastructure and believes that the first priority should be getting the roads re-paired. He can be reached at [email protected] Mayor Kearney asked for Fleischmanns First to participate in the Memorial Day Parade and asked if the Maple Princesses could participate as well.

New Business- Paula DeSimone has agreed to chair, nominat-ing committee. Slate to be announced at May 2nd meeting, elections at June meeting.

Next meeting of Fleischmanns First will be Saturday, May 2nd at La Cabana, 9:30am, coffee and at 9:15.
