From Pastor’s Desk… Both Sides of the Tapestry

Dear People of God,

There is an old story that

explains well the days that

follow from Palm Sunday to

Easter. You have to hear and

see both ends of Holy Week. I

have shared this story with

you in sermons…and I no

longer can quote you its

original source.

“The boy sat inside the

Sunday School room,

fascinated by a tapestry that

hung the full length of the

window. From its top edge,

which touched the ceiling, to

its bo om edge, which

almost touched the floor, it

was an u er mess. Random

strands of thread stuck out

all over the place. Knots were

grouped together in chao c

bunches. If there was any

design at all, it couldn’t be

detected. The ar st who

wove this mess together was

clearly unskilled.

One Sunday morning,

however, as the boy walked

into church with his parents,

he saw that tapestry from

outside the window. Now he

was seeing the front side of

the tapestry! What he saw

was absolutely beau ful. The

needlework was precise, the

fabric dense with vibrant

colors and images. The boy

had never seen such an

intricate design. The ar st

who wove this image

together was obviously a

master at his cra .”

Our life is o en like that

tapestry. From our inside

perspec ve, it looks like a

mess, but from God’s outside

perspec ve, it is a beau ful,

intricate design. God knows

about messy situa ons. He

sent his Son to the bloody,

awful mess of the cross. On

Good Friday, this was all

Jesus’ followers could see

(Luke 23:48–49). But even

that was part of God’s plan,

part of his design for the

world: to forgive you of all

your sin and bring you close

to him once again. And three

days later, we began to see

the other side of the tapestry.

What a beau ful, intricate

design Easter is indeed.

Good Friday, April 18, we will hold a 24‐hour, all congregation prayer vigil. Good Friday Noon

thru Easter Saturday Noon. Sign up you and your family for a one‐hour slot of prayer and

reflection under the Cross of Christ. Scripture Readings, Devotionals, handouts, prayer request

forms, prayer lists, prayer books and activities will be available for everyone’s use. All ages are

encouraged to attend. Sign ups will begin Sunday March 23.

Water U Doing the 4

Sundays a er Easter?

Water is the source and main

sustenance of biological

life. It makes up 70% of our

earth’s body and 70% of our

human bodies. And as you

know, water plays a huge

part in our Chris an story

and tradi on.

Beginning the first Sunday

a er Earth Day, April 29, at

8:30 a.m., downstairs, in the

Fellowship Hall, we will begin

a 4 Sunday explora on of our

rela onship with water. We

will explore our spiritual/

theological rela onship with

water along with water’s

ecological significance and

our stewardship

responsibili es.

We will have excellent

resources and links available

for our reading and exploring

together. Those will include

2 books by recent keynote

speakers at the Palouse Basin

Water Summit (PBWS), and a

variety of theological,

biblical, even musical

resources. There will be lively

discussion, and even field

trips will be available (for

extra credit ).

Jon Kimberling (co‐founder of

the PBWS), along with former

Emmanuel pastor Dean

Stewart, will be leading and

learning with the group.

The ELCA Youth Gathering

for high school‐age youth

takes place every three

years and is about faith

forma on, worship, study,

fellowship, service and play.

It is an opportunity for

youth to engage in worship

and fellowship with peers

from across the United

States and the world who

share a common

commitment and faith in

Christ. The next Youth

Gathering will be held July

15‐19, 2015, in Detroit,

Mich.

Many ELCA congrega ons

see their par cipa on in the

ministry of the ELCA Youth

Gathering as one aspect of

their work to fulfill the

promise they made around

the bap smal font to raise

their call to live and serve in

the world — locally and

globally.

On the days between

Wednesday and Sunday,

young people rotate

through a variety of service

learning experiences in the

surrounding community.

They explore and

strengthen their faith by

studying God’s word,

serving their neighbor,

sharing bread and wine in

worship, par cipa ng in

lively faith discussions and

broadening their experience

of God’s world and diverse

communi es through travel.

For many young people,

traveling to the ELCA Youth

Gathering is the first me

they have been out of their

county or state.

When the ques on “Why

work so hard to gather so

many young people in one

place?” pops up, the

response is really quite

simple.

faithful young people who:

Live among God’s

faithful people,

Hear the word of God

and share in the Lord’s

supper,

Proclaim the good news

of God in Christ through

their words and ac ons,

Serve and love our

neighbors, following the

example of Jesus, and

Pursue jus ce and

peace in the world.

What happens during the

ELCA Youth Gathering?

The Youth Gathering is a

five‐day event that begins

on a Wednesday evening

and ends with a service of

communion the following

Sunday morning. The

opening night sets the stage

for the days ahead in which

young people may have an

encounter with Jesus that

energizes their faith and

helps them further discover

RISE UP! ELCA Youth Gathering 2015!

We were meant to be

together, and we are a

church that believes God is

calling us into the world —

together.

So every now and then, we

gather young people and

adults together to share

their unique stories and to

experience the larger story

that makes up the ELCA; we

gather to be inspired,

encouraged, strengthened,

connected and sent out to

do God’s work in the world

— together!

The 2nd Annual Spaghe Feed to raise funds for Preschool Scholarships is slated for Thursday, April 10, 5

to 7:30 p.m. Chef Mike Mastro is again providing his gourmet skills for this delicious event. Tickets are

$7 per adult, $5 for 6‐12 year olds, or $20 per family of four. Children 5 and under are free. There will be

a silent auc on, prizes, games, entertainment, and a raffle! You won’t want to miss this exci ng event!

This School year, our Preschool Board approved over 5,000 dollars in scholarships to local children! We

can only do this with the generous support of our congrega on. Thank you for your loving gi s.

Spaghe From the Master! Chef Mastro! Don’t Miss It!

March was a month of food

tas ng for Terri's classes.

During the days learning

about people from other

countries the children

tasted Japanese crackers,

Chinese mochi balls, and

humus (a common food in

Egypt.) The children also

prac ced ea ng noodles

with chops cks. During

nutri on week we made

some tasty stone soup and

had a fun field trip to

Ferdinands where the

children sampled cheeses

and ate ice cream

cones. Marnie's classes also

and made feather

pain ngs. They did math

and literacy ac vi es with

insect themes. In April the

children will learn about

farm animals and go on a

field trip to the UI sheep

and dairy barns.

Our main fund‐raiser for the

year is the spaghe feed

coming up on April 10th. It

is a fun event and you are

all invited. High school

students will act as waiters

and waitresses, we will have

door prizes and Italian

music. There will be

vegetarian and meat sauces

went to Ferdinands. The

children watched cheese

being made in the creamery

and learned about the

process of cheese and ice

cream making. To go along

with our food themes,

Marnie's drama c play area

was an ice cream shop and

Terri's drama c play area

was a grocery store.

The children learned about

birds and insects as spring

arrived. They went on a

bird hunt using TP tube

binoculars they made,

inves gated nests and

feathers in the classroom,

along with the pasta, salad,

bread, and cookies. This

year the school will also

have a silent auc on

table. The money from the

dinner has been designated

to go to our scholarship

fund so we can assist

families in need. Thank you

Praise! Congrats! Yeah! Thanks!

Exactly one year ago my life was turned upside‐down due to a serious accident. My life was affected in so many ways. In fact, I was certain that it would never return as it was prior. Yet, as much of a struggle as it was, members of Emmanuel church were with me at every turn with love, empathy and prayer. Each one made the load I was

carrying just a li le lighter and more tolerable over the 112 days I was

hospitalized. So many of you offered and helped with Maya, my service dog which meant so much to both of us. Life was daun ng once I returned home and your

thoughts, prayers and assistance con nued. Realizing the importance of an accessible van in my daily living, many of you again stepped forward. With help from a fund‐

raiser at our church, the generosity of fellow church members, and Latah County Thrivent

for Lutherans, I was able to purchase a factory modified van which should serve me

many years. This wonderful surprise contributes toward my independence in so many ways, allowing me to live a "normal" life on my own. Your encouragement

con nues to mean so much to me as I now fight to eliminate an addic on to pain

medica ons. I thank the Lord each day for having given me such compassionate friends

within the Lutheran faith. At the me of my accident I was on an errand for the first annual Emmanuel Lutheran Preschool Spaghe Feed, a

program close to my heart. I encourage all to buy a cket or donate to this year's feed and a end. All of the proceeds go directly to scholarships for children of needy families at

Income and expenses this

year need to average about

$26,200 per month to meet

budget. Income for the

general fund in February

was about $23,900, and

expenses paid during the

month were about $24,600.

As a result, the general fund

deficit for the year‐

to‐date increased

owed to Wells Fargo

Bank, and received

another $250 in early

March. Amount

owed as of mid‐

March is now about

$16,050. Interest charged

for February at 5.75% was

about $83.

their Servant Strengths

form, pledge card, and

simply giving form. More

than 60 "families" returned

forms. Great! I know that in

the past we've gone

through this exercise of

telling church leadership

what we'd be happy to help

with, only to never be

contacted. I have been

harping to council and

others that this me around

we have to make that

conscious effort to not let

that happen again. You can

help too. If you don't get a

call, be proac ve. Really, it's

okay if you volunteer to do

something.

We saw about a 20% jump

in the number of simply

givers. Great! Two‐thirds of

the folks who pledged are

now also simply givers.

Great! We meet our budget

you.

Remembering, we are

"Riding the Wave" during

Lent. We are taking this

me to ponder our

bap sm. "Ride the Wave" is

our theme for the next few

weeks, thanks to the

Stewardship Task Force. It's

another step in our 18‐

month stewardship journey.

During Lent we'll be

focusing on what it means

to be bap zed. We've

already heard about it from

the pulpit, during Lenten

worship, and even during

J.A.M. (expect more). We'll

be riding that wave un l

late April / early May when

it culminates with a special

focus on the precious water

of the Palouse, led by Jon

Kimberling and Pastor Dean

Stewart. Part of

understanding our bap sm

is realiza on of God's

extravagance to us. Bap sm

on a month‐by‐month basis.

Those that use simply giving

help our treasurer know

what to expect each month,

and having a more

consistent level of giving,

especially during the

summer, helps us meet our

ministry and mission work

during those tradi onally

"leaner" months. And, those

pledge cards... what about

them? Well, they help all of

us take me to reflect on

our many blessings and how

we will respond to God's

extravagance. The

conscious effort of filling it

out makes us mindful,

improves our discipline.

And, if we do this

consistently, it would aid

Church Council and the

Finance Commi ee in

formula ng annual budgets.

Sojourners’ Alliance

Sojourners’ Alliance has a

con nual need for personal

items for their clients.

Hampers have been placed

in the bridge area. One is

marked for paper products,

such as toilet paper and

facial ssues, a second for

hand soap, and a third for

shampoos and condi oners.

These items are delivered to

Sojourners’ Alliance to help

those who are homeless

and trying to re‐establish

themselves.

Moscow Food Bank

Food for the Moscow Food

Bank may be le in the

designated spots both in

the narthex and our lower

entry. The Emmanuel

Outreach Commi ee

delivers donated food a er

the first Sunday of the

month. The Food Bank can

always use peanut bu er,

soda crackers, canned fruit,

beans, vegetables and

chili. Monetary dona ons

are always welcome

see it or touch it, a prayer

for the well‐being of all

around you is offered. The

Prayer Patches are available

in a basket in the narthex.

With them are envelopes

into which you may place a

dona on if you wish.

the directors of The

Common Ministry have

worked hard to promote

a ministry of spiritual

discovery and growth

that make a difference in

the lives of others. The

Common Ministry Council

has been managing and

maintaining the building,

room at Community

Congrega onal UCC) and

plans to u lize a variety

of available sites on

campus and within the

Pullman community for

programs. This is a new

chapter in the life of The

Common Ministry.

Thanks to the support

from people like you—

the Interfaith House as

part of its ministry since

1965. Unfortunately for

our organiza on, the

owner of the building

made a decision to sell.

The sale is currently in

process. The Common

Ministry will move its

administra ve office to
