Word From The Pastor

Many people find Mondays to be particularly dreadful. It seems harder to get out of bed, find your motivation, and head out on Mondays. The work always seems to be a bit more burdensome, and the tasks more numerous on the first day of the week as well. Despite all of this I have discov-ered that Mondays are extremely important. If I start the week well I tend to finish well. If the week starts off crummy then you can probably guess how it generally ends. With this in mind let me share a few thoughts about how you can make your Monday’s better.

1. Understand that having a great Monday actually starts on Sunday. Did you attend church on

Sunday and get charged up spiritually? Did you observe the Sabbath and keep it holy? Did you allow your mind, body, and soul to rest on Sunday so it is ready for Monday? Or did you burn the candle at both ends all weekend long? Most of us over extend ourselves on the weekends, and believe it or not it really affects our Mondays. If you will worship, rest, relax, and go to bed early on Sunday it will make a huge difference in your Monday.

2. Move those BIG ROCKS! I try to move my big rocks on Monday. The reasoning is simple. I am fresh on Monday. I am well rested, my spirit is restored, and I am ready to go. So get that big task out of the way. Don’t put it off till later in the week, get whatever you dread out of the way. I move big rocks on Monday and then shovel gravel later in the week. Doing my big stuff on Monday and Tuesday gets me off to a very productive start. I feel like I have really accomplished something. Your Monday will always be better if you can look back at the end of the day and see that you got something big done.

3. Develop a clear plan the remainder of your week. Look at your calendar, consider the tasks you have to accomplish then make a plan. Having this plan in place will help the rest of your week go smooth. Instead of flying by the seat of your pants, when you finish one thing you will now have a plan to help you move on quickly to the next step. This only takes a few minutes of your Monday but it will save your several hours during the course of your week. Plan next weekend too, and remember to plan on observing the Sabbath, because having another good Monday seven days from now starts on Sunday remember?

4. Write down a Bible verse that proclaims a promise, or challenge from scripture. Meditate on that verse throughout the week, and keep your eyes and ears tuned in spiritually as the week progresses. Where is God working? What is God saying? Can you see that promise in your life? Did you accomplish the challenge? Make this something you do each Monday and it will enhance your entire week. Maybe it’s a verse you heard from the sermon on Sunday or something you found in your daily quiet time. Whatever the case write it down and think about it all week.

I really hope these things help you have great Mondays. Starting the week off on the right foot

is extremely important. It’s worth the extra effort, trust me. Have a great week; I look forward to seeing you at church as we approach Easter!

Of Events

Luke 24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices

they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were won-

dering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to

them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remem-

ber how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be deliv-

ered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then

they remembered his words.

Food for Thought

In January, leaders in Charlotte , North Carolina, invited their favorite son, Billy Graham, to a luncheon in his honor.

Billy Graham is now 92 years-old. Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggles with Parkinson's disease. But the Charlotte leaders said, 'We don't expect a major address. Just come and let us honor you.' So he agreed. After wonderful things were said about him, Dr. Graham stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, and said, "I'm reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist who this month has been honored by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn't find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn't there. He looked in his briefcase but couldn't find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn't find it.” "The conductor said, 'Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket. Don't worry about it.' "Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket. "The conductor rushed back and said, 'Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don't worry, I know who you are; no problem. You don't need a ticket. I'm sure you bought one.' Einstein looked at him and said, "Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don't know is where I'm going." Having said that Billy Graham continued, "See the suit I'm wearing? It's a brand new suit. My children, and my grandchildren are telling me I've gotten a little slovenly in my old age. I used to be a bit more fastidious. So I went out and bought a new suit for this luncheon and one more occasion. You know what that occasion is? This is the suit in which I'll be buried. But when you hear I'm dead, I don't want you to immediately remember the suit I'm wearing. I want you to remember this: I not only know who I am. I also know where I'm going." May your troubles be less, your blessings more, and may nothing but happiness, come through your door. "Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - it has no point. And, when our ticket is punched, may each of us have lived our lives so that we don't have to worry about where we are going.” Amen & Peace My Friends

Three Years and Counting 03/06/2014

We lay in the hammock together tonight, his head resting on my arm, his little legs wrapped around mine, and

looked at the moon. Between pointing at stars and trees and glimpses of moonlight he would hug my growing belly, absently rubbing it as he does every day.

He turned three a few days ago, my seventh child, and we celebrated his miracle-of-a-life with cake and can-dles and many, many heartfelt gifts, one of the perks of large families and generous kids. He was thrilled that it was finally his turn to be celebrated, not knowing the celebration I feel each day of his life.

We visited his first family recently. The whole village came out to see him, and he greeted them one by one, at once both friendly and oblivious. He chased chickens and drank soda and everywhere we went the people were amazed by him.

I found an old journal this week from my first days of caring for him. I seemed tired and worn out, nursing two babies and getting little sleep, but oh, so in love with this boy. Even then, from day one, my heart was crying for this baby that no one wanted the responsibility for, this tiny one so alive, even at 2 1/2 pounds.

I had coffee with a friend the last time I was in Jinja, and we talked about the prevalence of abandoned babies in Uganda. Her girls used to spend time on the street before joining her family and pick through garbage for their living. Abandoned babies were a common sight for them. They would find babies in dumpsters or among the trash, alive and crying. But they were children themselves, barely making it, unable to care for another, and this was just normal life. Babies unwanted, unloved, unclaimed.

In Kaceri we have a program called the Moses Project that was born out of a desire to see babies, from all situations, thriving in their families. Today we met in our school hut, seven mothers and grandmothers with their twins and grandchildren, babies crawling and crying everywhere. We read the Bible together, we prayed for each other, we gave out milk and food, we held little ones and gave instruction about caring well for their children. We tried, with our words and actions, to validate these women who are trying so hard against such difficult odds.

And it's working. They are learning and babies are thriving.

As I sat there with these women, Acuka on my lap, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for my son's life. He was one of these children, a motherless child, unwanted by his grandmother, supposed too small to survive.

But now. Now.

He is our joy. It just radiates from him. He jumps everywhere he goes, and his laughter is constant and conta-gious. He copies everything his brothers and sisters do, for better or for worse. He almost always has a toy car clutched in one fist, but can rarely be found in pants. He is spontaneous and free with his affection and loves everything except napping and bathing. He still makes me stop and stare with wonder at his life, his miracle-of-a-life.

And so tonight I cuddle him close. I kiss his fuzzy head and stroke his brown cheeks. We look at the moon together as the hammock sways, and I give thanks for his life and the chance to be a part of it. What a blessing he is.
