RAM GUARD™ Column ProtectorRAM GUARD™ provides superior rack column protection with its patent-pending Rubber Armored Metal design. Molded of energy absorbing rubberwith a “U-shaped” steel insert and force distributing rubber voids, RAMGuard absorbs significantly more energy during impact than most columnprotection devices offered today.
RAM Guard Advantages• Protects rack structures from frontal, angled and side impacts
• Significantly lowers impact damage to pallet rack columns
• Requires no hardware or straps to retain the guard on column.
• Endures many impacts with no loss of performance
• Significantly outperforms most plastic guards commonly used today
Available in 12-inch heights, RAM Guard snaps onto rolled or structural steel columns 3-inches wide and up to 3-inches deep.

How the Little Guys Can Win In Today’s David-and-Goliath Business World
Before the internet, small companies didn’t stand a chance against the Goliaths, says Corrine Sandler, a globally recognized leader in business
intelligence and market research.
That’s because no war can be won without intelligence and, before the digital era, collecting actionable data and information about one’s competitors, market and customers cost a lot more than most small businesses – the Davids – could afford.
“But today, the Davids are taking down the Goliaths,” says Sandler, founder and CEO of Fresh Intelligence Research Corp., a global business intelligence company, and author of the new book, “Wake Up or Die”, a comprehensive guide to the use of intelligence in the contemporary business environment.
“Thanks to the internet, the boutiques and startups have access to all kinds of free tools for gathering intelligence. They’re also much more agile than the big corporations; they can make a decision and act immediately. That’s essential in a marketplace where conditions change quickly.”
In “Wake Up or Die,” Sandler applies lessons from Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” – the 2,000-year-old military treatise penned by one of the greatest commanders in history – to the modern business economy. Sun Tzu held that the goal in any war is to win without ever entering into physical battle.
“By gathering actionable data and acting on it immediately, by using it to predict next moves and spot opportunities, small businesses can and are taking down the big ones without a drop of blood being shed,” Sandler says.
She offers smaller business owners these tips for acquiring and using intelligence:
• If you lack resources, make use of free or inexpensive intelligence-gathering tools. Visit competitors’ websites and collect data about them. Many businesses put a great deal of revealing information on their sites, which can benefit you. Also, make note of any changes on their sites. Google Alerts can tell you when they’re releasing new products or expanding. Use Google analytics tools such as Google Hot Trends to tell you what’s in the collective consciousness – potential consumer demand – at any given time. Google’s key word tool will give you ideas for powerful key words in search terms, and use the traffic tool to measure global volume on those key words.
• Make intelligence-gathering part of your company’s culture. From the manager who overhears a conver-sation in the grocery checkout line to the clerk obsessed with Twitter, every employee in your business is a potential intelligence resource. Encourage employees to pay attention as they interact with others outside the company. They may discover a nagging issue that no other company is addressing, allowing you to create uncontested market space. Or,
you may learn critical information about a competitor that allows you to seize an advantage. Make intelligence gathering a company lifestyle.
• Appoint a Chief Intelligence Officer (CIO) to coordinate and analyze information from a variety of sources. In smaller companies, leaders tend to rely on pipelines of internal information provided by employees who don’t understand how to use intelligence to make empowering decisions. That can render important data inactionable (unusable or simply not used). A CIO can oversee and coordinate the collection and analysis of intelligence, and brief you – the business leader – daily so that all data is actionable.
“What enables you to make smart, timely decisions is access to precise intelligence,” Sandler says. “Your advan-tage, as a smaller business, is that you don’t have the corporate processes and protocols that inhibit fast action.
“As Sun Tzu wrote, ‘It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win 100 battles without a single loss.’ ”

Creamer’s Corner
Sweeper VS. Scrubber VS. Sweeper-ScrubberBy: Micheal Creamer
It’s Sweeper vs. Scrubber vs. Sweeper-Scrubber. For cleaner contractors it can be a problem and very confusing. If not tough altogether, it can be a very costly error.
For cleaner contractors that maintain facilities indoors, as well as outdoors, some would agree that a multi-task machine would make the most sense, while others would disagree with that assessment and insist on a single function machine.
As for me, I think every situation is somewhat different from each other and to bunch all situations would be a mistake.
So, let’s say you are a contractor who offers services to clean many different surfaces, such as the following:
#1. Food Warehouse#2. Maintain Small City Streets#3. Shopping Mall
In this example, the Food Warehouse has to be scrubbed so that is a no brainer. A rider scrubber is to
be used for the environment. For sweeping the street, some people may want to use a sweeper-scrubber. This would not be practical as far as scrubbing. I would use strictly a sweeper. Depending on the size of the city, one could use a large industrial sweeper such as a Tennant 800 Sweeper. If you were a contractor that strictly cleans city streets, a large street sweeper may be your choice, but if you are diverse, the Tennant sweeper should suffice.
This leads me into the shopping mall. The parking areas, the Tennant should be fine as well. The indoors a small rider scrubber should be fine as well. The sweeper-scrubber in all these instances in my mind is not necessary.
A sweeper-scrubber could be used in a large warehouse, airplane hangars and auto manufacturers. One environment I would never recommend a sweeper-scrubber is a paper mill, paper printer. I rented a sweeper-scrubber to such a place. The operator, not being familiar with the equipment, left the solution valve on after use. He then walked away. The cleaning solution ran all over the floor. The large paper rolls being
about 5 feet in diameter and 4 feet tall absorbed this liquid like a sponge. I immediately received a call to remove this machine. It had ruined two rolls. From my understanding, it cost approximately $5,000.00 per roll. From that point on, they rented only sweepers.
So, if you have a situation that you are not sure about, perhaps I could help figure out what’s best for you.
As usual, thank you for reading Creamers Corner. You can e-mail me at [email protected]

just promise...We deliver!”
Established over eight and a half years ago, West Point Rack is a fast-growing company with a competitive price and a very service oriented management team.
“Pricing is always an issue and we offer very competitive prices. However, service and standing behind your product once it is delivered is critical to building lasting relationships with dealers. If product issues do arise, we address those issues immediately with the goal of creating satisfaction for both our dealer and their customer,” said Terry Sroka, Chief Executive Officer.
West Point Rack only offers its products to distributors and is a member of MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association).
“We don’t sell to end users,” said Reva Bily, President of West Point Rack. “If we get a call from an end-user, we refer them to a dealer.”
“In addition, our trade policies are geared to the needs of our dealers. West Point Rack handles freight on
a prepay and add basis plus we sell on open accounts with terms of 1%/10, net 30 to accounts with approved credit” said Sroka.
The Nebraska based company provides a variety of racks to meet customer needs including:• Cantilever racks in light,
intermediate, heavy and extra heavy-duty configurations.
• Structural pallet racks that are sturdy enough to handle any kind of abuse from forklifts or extreme environments. Racks are available as galvanized or painted steel to minimize rusting and can be configured to meet almost any need a customer may have.
• Portable stacking racks can be made to order. Any size for your specific needs can be fulfilled.
• Specialty products made by West Point Rack include bar cradle trucks, drum racks and handcarts.
In addition, West Point Rack has recently added new products to their line of racks. Included is a new line of Reel Racks, ranging in height from eight to 12 feet. Reel Racks come with a gray paint finish, but other colors are available upon request. Vertical racks, which
will hold material from 21 inches to 12 feet, features six-inch deep arms with three shelves made of 14-guage steel. U-Racks, which come with an orange paint finish, can be stacked up to four units high to save space.
Customers can see specifications and photos of any rack they may be interested in purchasing by visiting www.westpointrack.com. And if you don’t see what you are looking for, call 866/245-3630. West Point Rack may be able to fill your need.
“I always look for things when we do specials,” Sroka said. “Does it have any potential of becoming a standard product? That is how we developed a lot of our standard products.”
West Point Rack’s motto is the reason they will continue to be one of the fastest growing companies in the industry.
“I don’t want to be one of the biggest rack companies out there, just one of the better ones,” Sroka said. “Our primary goal is to support our dealers, satisfy their customers, earn trust and be the ‘Vendor of Choice’ for rack products and racking systems.”

Embrace the Darkness: Moving to the Lights-Out WarehouseBy Kevin Ambrose
There is an ancient proverb that says it is better to light a single candle than curse the darkness. For the materials handling world, however, not only
should we not curse the darkness, it may finally be time to embrace it.
The “lights-out warehouse” has been talked about for years. So why hasn’t adoption of that concept taken off? After all, it sounds like a CFO’s dream – highly predictable machine-based output without the uncer-tainty and costs associated with the human workforce.
There are many advantages to be gained by replacing people with machines from top to bottom in a ware-house or distribution center (DC) operation. Machines don’t require breaks or vacations, and you don’t need three different machines doing the same task to cover three shifts. Machines can be built to tolerate hotter hots and colder colds than humans, which enable significant energy and maintenance savings on heating and cooling in a distribution center. There is no federal agency protecting the health and welfare of machines, and they don’t require liability or health insurance.
One other compelling reason is how it will protect your business against known and unknown competition. Ideally, every successful business wants to build a “moat” – an impenetrable barrier to entry that keeps others from cutting into their successes. The large,
up-front cost for equipment, and the sheer amount of knowledge and expertise required to run a lights-out warehouse or DC create such a moat.
Think of it this way: If you want to open a lawn-mowing business, all you really need to get started are a few mowers, people to run them and a means of transporting them. The barriers to entry are low, so ultimately the competition will be cutthroat. But if you want to start a shipping business where the established leader already has a well-designed, multi-million dollar network and a great deal of expertise, you’ll probably think twice before deciding to compete in that arena.
Flipping the SwitchSo why hasn’t the industry flipped the switch on the lights-out warehouse approach? There are a couple of issues holding it back. One, of course, is the difficulty in justifying the up-front cost of fully automating a ware-house or DC. While humans can be expensive over the long haul, you’re paying those costs in small, weekly or bi-weekly increments. Robots and automated equipment, on the other hand, have to be paid-for up-front.
It can be difficult to get approval for that large of a capital expenditure, especially if the enterprise is focused on keeping costs down. But in an era where corporate finance departments are struggling to achieve 2 percent to 3 percent returns on their investments,
automation can deliver annual returns in the 15 percent to 50 percent range – which makes it far more compelling to even the most financially cautious organizations.
Another is the capabilities of the automated machines themselves. Traditionally, robots and other automation have been very effective at performing highly repetitive tasks. In manufacturing, for example, they’ve been excellent at putting the same screw into the same hole, or making the same weld, on product after product. But they haven’t been so good at dealing with variables. And what is a warehouse or DC if not an infinitely variable environment, especially in today’s fast-moving eCommerce world?
The third is the risk factor. There aren’t too many truly lights-out facilities of any type (much less a warehouse or DC specifically) to look at as a model for how it should be done. That’s a pretty risky proposition for any venture, much less one with such a high up-front cost. The cost of failure – in terms of lost business today, the loss of the lifetime value of customers and the expense of tearing it all out and doing something else if you do survive – is unpalatable to most organizations.
Yet many still see the upside potential as huge. So, how do you decide whether to embrace the darkness by going lights-out? Find out at www.mhnetwork.com/news/embrace-the-darkness/

Workplace Wellness at TVH By: Bonnie Steer of TVH
TVH, from the outside, is known as the worldwide leading supplier of quality replacement parts and
accessories for the material handling and industrial equipment industry. What is less known, however, is it’s “what’s on the inside” that makes TVH strong.
Workplace wellness is trending now, but TVH recognized the importance of workplace health over five years ago. Not only did TVH recognize the impor-tance of employee health, they took action. TVH knew they couldn’t force employees to be healthy, but could “Nudge” them into action by showing health can be easy and fun.
It started with a small walking group and newsletter. The walking group met after work, discussed health and earned small prizes for completing healthy challenges. The newsletter introduced employees to the health initiative and had tips for healthy living.
The popularity of wellness at TVH grew. Soon suggestions were coming in, and new programs were started, such as a Biggest Loser style contest. TVH also started providing fresh fruit to all employees on a weekly basis.
The programs expanded quickly, as did the budget, and in 2011 an official health and wellness department was created at TVH. The Nudge department, as it is called by its employees, has grown from 18 wellness offerings in 2011 to over 90 in 2013.
Employees enjoy benefits such as education classes, partial reimburse-ments for gym memberships and 5K events, health contests and monthly employee appreciation surprises. The surprise may be nutrition-related or an event. At the facility in Olathe, Kansas there is also a social and fitness area, called the Nudge Center.
“The Nudge Center is great,” says 10-year employee Lisa Ayres. “I want to play pool and socialize there instead of going out to smoke, which I used to do.”
According to TVH’s insurer, BlueCross Blue Shield, 15 people have stopped smoking since 2012. The good news doesn’t stop there—since 2011, TVH employees have collectively lost more than 1,900 pounds and have walked or ran more than 1,300 miles in local 5ks.
Executive support is key and Els Thermote, TVH CEO, is one of the drivers of the Nudge Program. Often you will her participating in health offerings such as yoga, boot camp and massage. She also represents TVH in running and swimming events in an annual competi-tion among Kansas City companies. Last year, Els participated in 32 Nudge events — almost one a week! Impressive for a busy, travelling executive. “Your health is the most important thing. I want to help make people aware of the small things you can do that make a difference in your health,” says Els. “By “nudging” them to live a healthier lifestyle. On top of that, it helps teamwork, it improves morale and productivity.”

Employees enjoy social activities as well as fit-ness classes in TVH’s Nudge Center.

She’s right. With the implementation of Nudge, there has been a definite change in the corporate culture and the bottom line. Groups of people can now be seen walking around the building for breaks or “walking meetings,” eating fruit instead of junk food and participating in health-related activities.
Morale is high, and employees are hap-pier and friendlier because they know their co-workers better. According to a recent employee survey, the wellness program is a top reason to work for TVH. Comments like “Thank you for Nudge!” “I love all the great programs and try to do them all,” and “Great job!” frequently appear in TVH executives’ emails.
Employee health engagement has also led to steady health care costs, fewer sick days and lower turnover. TVH is now even in the process of implement-ing an onsite-clinic.
It’s not all about diet and exercise. Wellness at TVH incorporates other aspects of health such as financial well-being. TVH offers Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace classes to employees to teach about budgeting and reduce financial stress.
“That program has changed (improved) our financial situation, our peace of mind and even our marriage,” says Bob Fite, 12-year employee. By following the steps
in the program, 6- year employee Brett Beem was able to pay cash for a new air conditioner, furnace and water heater when they unexpectedly broke down at the same time. He’s since rebuilt his emergency fund and says, “While I’m sure there will be another surprise pur-chase in the future, I know I’m prepared for it, thanks to the principles taught in this program. What a great feeling!”
Another popular program TVH offers to its employees is called Wellness on a Shoestring by Dr. Michelle Robin. This program focuses on health aspects such as sleep quality, meditation, organization of space and improving social ties.
With such diverse offerings in their wellness program, TVH has about 80% of their employees participating in two or more wellness events yearly. The average employee participates in seven wellness events a year.
TVH’s Nudge program is designed to aid and encourage employees to lead healthy productive lives, professionally and personally. So when you look inside TVH, you see strong – including our muscles.
Look for more articles about the Nudge offerings at TVH and tips on starting a healthy culture at your business in the next issue of Material Handling Network.

The 1.6% Rule: Still Going Strong.By: Mike Marchev
During the Nagano Winter Olympics eight years ago I analyzed the times in the downhill ski race and
arrived at what came to be known as the Rule of 1.6%.
Eight years later my rule has once again been validated.
In the woman’s downhill the time differential from first place to tenth place was less than 1.6% in a race that took a minute and 40 seconds. Think about that. Think hard about that. A race down a mountain that takes just under 2 min-utes has a 1.6% differential between first place (Gold) and tenth place (who was that skier?) There is more evidence.
Switching over to the ice, Shani Davis missed his opportunity to win his third Gold Medal in as many Olympics. He missed by .73 seconds. I said Point Seven Three. He skated 1000 meters and was less than one second behind the Gold Medal Winner. Shani Davis
came in eight. 1,2,3,4,,5,6,7,….. eighth. (Incredible!) I could go on.
Message: It does not take much to distance yourself from the competition in the Olympics … or in your business. Find ways that you can be just a little bit faster, better, more valuable to your client. Honestly, it doesn’t take much.

In today’s forklift truck marketplace many overhead cam engines (OHC) are used. The majority of designs use
a timing belt setup that drives the cam-shaft and valve train assembly. Only a few manufacturers have used a timing chain setup with the OHC design in forklift applications. From our experience dealing with forklift truck dealerships nationwide, timing belt maintenance is often neglected. Resulting in bent valves or a shattered piston, failure to maintain your timing belt can be extremely costly. The following article will cover timing belt operation/reasons for maintenance and the proper procedures for changing a timing belt. One of the many items inspected at each PM Service should be the engines timing belt. The technician should look for cracks in the belt, any type of excessive wear, fraying, missing teeth, etc. If any of these symptoms exist the belt must be replaced. The water pump runs off of the timing belt on certain models and therefore a worn water pump could cause a premature timing belt failure. Other items to check are the sprockets. The cam, crank and other sprockets do wear, the teeth become round and thin out. On Mitsubishi 4G63/64 engines, the belt tends to wear the oil pump sprocket more so than the others. Any problems with idlers or tensioners can also cause timing belt failure. Technicians must understand the belts importance and inspect the entire timing assembly upon each routine maintenance visit to avoid costly repairs that could have been prevented. When changing the timing belt always put the engine at top dead center (TDC) compression stroke before removing the belt. If you remove the belt first and try to put the crank and cam pulleys on their marks afterwards, you will run the risk of a piston contacting open valves and have them bend. When the belt is removed visually checkout the associated
components for wear as mentioned above. Any faulty tensioner or idler should also be changed at this time. The cam seal and front main seal should be checked for leaks. For balanced engines, always change balancer belts when changing the timing belt. Always matchup the new belts with the old belts. Count teeth, inspect for round or square teeth, and compare tooth pitch (distance between teeth). The belt styles may vary even for the same manufacturer due to changes in the production year breaks.
Always use the proper specifications and timing instructions before attempting this repair. All service manuals will show the timing mark alignment and will specify the proper tension procedures. For balanced engines, it is critical to follow the procedures to insure proper balancer timing. If the balancer is not timed properly severe vibration will occur.
Here is the listed order as explained: • Read timing belt section in service manual • Set engine at TDC compression stroke • Remove timing belt • Inspect related timing components • Inspect oil seals for leaks • Inspect water pump (if applicable) • Install timing belt • Double check timing setup • Tighten belt to proper tension as explained by the service manual For any timing spec’s, instructions or questions specific to your timing belt application please feel free to contact us at any time: 877/303-LIFT (5438)

Why the Material Handling IndustryBy: Curtis Clark, Western Regional Sales Manager at Superior Tire & Rubber Corp.
The material handling industry most likely won’t have a movie made about it. I don’t expect to see
Leonardo DiCaprio playing an over-the-top dealer principal or manufacturing exec in our industry. That doesn’t mean that our industry is any less exciting or rewarding than any other. The material handling industry offers a number of different challenges and rewards. It also is still very much a people-oriented business and in the sales process it’s very hands on. With recruitment as such a high priority in the industry, let’s take some time to examine some of the unique qualities of the industry. Problem Solving Some may argue that problem solving is a part of every industry. While that is true in the material handling industry, there are a number of different problems and solutions that can be dealt with to get the customer exactly what they want or need. In the dealer and distribution end of the business there is no reason to walk into an account and not look at everything. We’ve gone past just asking about the forklifts. Now our dealers are asking about the racking, lighting, dock and door issues, and parts and service. There is always something that you can talk to a customer about and help solve a problem. On the manufacturing side you’re always looking at ways to make your product or distribution better. Adding in new technologies or techniques to make your process even better is fundamental in order to grow your business. There’s a constant back and forth and because the challenges change and learning curves continue to challenge all of us in the industry. This job is ever evolving. Just think of the amount of technology that has gone into our equipment over the last 10 years and what is projected in the next 5 to 10. The problem solving aspect of this industry will continue to be common place and newer and ever changing tech-nology will be a part of not only how we take care of our customers, but it will be demanded by those customers. Exposure In the material handling industry we get to see and experience many different things. Look around the room you’re in. Everything in that room has had to go through some form of material handling process. While the material handling industry by itself may sound singular, the industries that it consults or sells to are endless. Foodservice, Beverage, Grocery, Aerospace, and many others all look for material handling solutions. This provides a huge supply of potential customers while also providing
a huge potential to learn and experience how other businesses operate. Taking the time to learn from other industries not only helps the business you’re in but it helps expand your ability to help others and provide more efficient solutions. While career paths in accounting or law give you exposure, many times these professions aren’t completely involved in making the operation successful or find it useful to take in the entire operation. The material handling industry wants to take in the whole picture and provide solutions for the entire operation. This means we don’t have to or want to look at one piece of the puzzle; we want to look at the whole picture. I’m going to take this last part to talk about what this industry has meant to me. Over the last 13 years I’ve been able to see and experience a number of different things. I’ve been able to travel all over the United States. I’ve been able to see some of the most interesting processes in the beverage and food service industry as well as other industries. I’ve been constantly challenged to come up with new ideas and new products that help solve problems for my customers. I truly believe that this industry values hard work and wants to grow people that are willing to step up and make our industry better and stronger. I have an even deeper connection. I’m 3rd Generation in this industry and I’ve been able to watch the hard work pay off for many members of my family. My father has been able to travel places he would have otherwise never had the opportunity to, thanks to this industry. Above all of this, for me and my family this industry has provided a great living and rewarded all of us for the work and effort that we put in. I’ll be the first to admit our industry doesn’t sound the most glamorous or have the shine that others may have. Given my proximity to Hollywood, California, I constantly get sideways looks when asked what I do for a living and it’s followed by, “There’s an industry for that?” Or, “You can make money doing that?” While we look to recruit the next generation, I think it’s important to focus on how rewarding this industry is, not just in a monetary sense but also in an intellectual sense. The latest generation entering the workforce wants a challenge. They don’t want to feel bored or tied down. Focus on the fact that in this industry there is always something to challenge them and a new level comes up every day!

All fall protection products fit into four functional categories. 1. Fall Arrest; 2. Positioning; 3. Suspension; 4. Retrieval.
Fall Arrest: A fall arrest system is required if any risk exists that a worker may fall from an elevated position, as a general rule, the fall arrest system should be used anytime a working height of six feet or more is reached. Working height is the distance from the walking/working surface to a grade or lower level. A fall arrest system will only come into service should a fall occur. A full-body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or a retractable lifeline is the only product recommended. A full-body harness distributes the forces throughout the body, and the shock-absorbing lanyard decreases the total fall arresting forces.
Positioning: This system holds the worker in place while keeping his/her hands free to work. Whenever the worker leans back, the system is activated. However, the per-sonal positioning system is not specifically designed for fall arrest purposes.
Suspension: This equipment lowers and supports the worker while allowing a hands-free work environment, and is widely used in window washing and painting industries. This suspension system components are not designed to arrest a free fall, a backup fall arrest system should be used in conjunction with the suspension system.
Retrieval: Preplanning for retrieval in the event of a fall should be taken into consideration when developing a proactive fall management program.
Fall Protection Systems: Listed below are different types of fall safety equipment and their recommended usage.
Class 1- Body belts (single or double D-ring) are designed to restrain a person in a hazardous work position and to reduce the possibility of falls. They should not be used when fall potential exists; positioning only.
Class 2- Chest harnesses are used when there are only limited fall hazards (no vertical free fall hazard), or for retrieving persons such as removal of persons from a tank or a bin.Class 3- Full body harnesses are designed to arrest the most severe free falls.Class 4- Suspension belts are independent work supports used to suspend a worker, such as boatswain’s chairs or raising or lowering harnesses.
Rope Lanyard- Offers some elastic properties for all arrest; used for restraint purpose.Web Lanyard- Ideal for restraint purposes where fall hazards are less than 2 feet.Cable Positioning Lanyards- Designed for corrosive or excess heat environments and must be used in conjunction with shock absorbing devices.Shock Absorbers- When used, the fall arresting force will be greatly reduced if a fall occurs.Rope Grabs- A deceleration device which travels on a lifeline, used to safely ascend or descend ladders or sloped surfaces and automatically, by friction, engages the lifeline and locks so as to arrest the fall of an employee.Retractable Lifeline Systems- Gives fall protection and mobility to the user when working at height or in areas where there is a danger of falling.Safety Nets- Can be used to lesson the fall exposure when working where temporary floors and scaffolds are not used and the fall distance exceeds 25 feet.Rail Systems- When climbing a ladder, rail systems can be used on any fixed ladder as well as curved surfaces as a reliable method of fall prevention.
