Every avid gardener has a favorite container for starting seeds. Maybe you like the sawed off milk container? I was a fan of egg boxes, and would start stacking them up at Christmas to ensure I had enough for my spring seeds. For many years, I’d save planting pots, leaving behind a trail of potting mix as I made my way from windowsill to windowsill.

These days, sowing my spring seeds is such a clean and easy task I’ve come up with good reasons to warrant

going a little overboard. I like to disassemble my Jiffy seed starting greenhouses and use the plastic lid to

hold the potting mix. Soaking the trays in water before filling them with the seed starting soil ensures the seedlings will be off to a good start. After cleaning out the lid and assembling the seed trays, all that remains is to find a place in the house to keep the Jiffy trays warm.

Seedlings hate to dry out, but if you remember to water regularly, in just a few weeks there will be more flowers or vegetables than you’ll know what to do with. And here’s the best tip of all: label the little start ups with a creative tag, tie a simple bow around the tray, and you’ll have gifts at the ready for friends, teachers and every mom in the neighborhood just in time for Mother’s Day. Happy seed starting!
