TAKE THE “LID OFF” POVERTY HOUSING! HABITAT BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER PLANNED FOR NEXT WEEK! Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will hold its Fourth Annual Fundraising Breakfast on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. at the Riverside Country Club in Provo. Jason D. Wright, New York Times bestselling author of the Christmas Jars, will be speaking. The free event, sponsored by American West Bank and McCoy’s Flooring and Cabinets, will provide the local Habitat affiliate an opportunity to showcase its programs, while raising much needed funding for the organization’s affordable housing mission. HABITAT TO OPEN SECOND RESTORE IN SOUTH

COUNTY

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be opening a sec-ond ReStore Home Improvement Outlet in Spanish Fork at the end of April. The 29,000 square foot store will be lo-

cated across from IFA on the second Spanish Fork exit in the old Fritzie Building (253 West Arrowhead Trail) and will house the store and the Habitat construction department. A grand opening celebration for the new location will be held April 25th, 26th, and 27th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting event planned for April 25th at 9:30 a.m. All inter-ested community members are invited to attend. Tax deductible donations of new and used building materials, appliances and furniture will be accepted as of April 20th at the new loca-tion.

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be holding orientation meetings for home applica-tions in two weeks at Community Action Services and Food Bank at 815 South Freedom Blvd., Provo. Community members who are interested in applying for the Habitat program will need to come to one of the following meetings for applications and more information: Tuesday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m.; Friday, April 19, at 1:30 p.m. No registration required. HABITAT TO COLLECT PAINT AT ANNUAL HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY

Utah County residents with household hazardous waste items such as old gasoline, paint, and fluorescent light bulbs can dispose of these items safely at the annual Utah County Household Hazardous waste Collection Day on April 13, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Provo Towne Centre Parking Lot. HABITAT, REDEMTECH PARTNERSHIP PROVIDES REFURBISHED COMPUTERS TO

LOCAL FAMILIES

Habitat for Humanity of International is partnering with Redemtech, a world leader in refur-bishing large volumes of PCs from businesses, to provide computers to Habitat partner families in selected areas. The computers are being provided through Redemtech’s Micro-soft approved refurbishing (MAR) computer program including genuine Microsoft software and other initiatives. Locally, ten Habitat families will be receiving desktop computers as part

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, causing an estimated 22,000 deaths of year in the United States. Habitat offers test kits at the Orem ReStore or online for just $6.00! • Need tools for your upcoming spring cleaning projects? Stop by Habitat for Humanity of Utah County’s tool lending library and “check out” needed tools and lawn care items for free. The lending library, located inside the Habitat ReStore at 340 South Orem Blvd., Orem, is open Monday through Saturday from 10-6. An application and proof of residency are re-quired. • Save Money for Home Repairs and Maintenance – A new home maintenance fund has been established to help Habitat homeowners save for future home repairs and maintenance. Homeowners now can pay a little extra ($10.00 or more) with their monthly mortgage payment. The extra amount will be saved in an escrow like account and can be accessed for home repairs and maintenance. The annual National Women Build Week will be May 4th to May 10th. Habitat will be building throughout that week with vari-ety Utah County women. Our special guest will be Olympian, Noelle Pikus Pace. PICKING A PASSION! Habitat for Humanity of Utah County joined together with nine other Utah County non-profit organi-zations to promote Love Give Utah County on March 22, 2013. The one day giving and awareness campaign was part of a statewide initiative called, Love Utah Give Utah, spon-sored by the Community Foundation. The local charities held a non-profit fair at the Provo Towne Centre that evening to help promote the campaign and encourage donations. The local Habitat affiliate raised $1,360 from 30 online donors during that day. Donations will be used to finish the Artan-duaga home in Provo.

April Build Days

Volunteers are currently being sought to help with construction, renovation, revitalization, and landscaping projects. Build days are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Volunteers are needed especially during weekdays. Sign up online at www.habitatuc.org/volunteer.

• Purchase efficient equipment. Look for Energy Star office equipment, such as computers, printers and fax machines. They use less energy than standard office equipment.

• Don’t let the computer run all day. Only power on the computer, monitor, printer and fax machine when you need them. Don’t leave them on after you’re finished working. Computers and other office equipment still use energy in sleep mode.

How to Make Your Water Heater Last for Decades

The single most important thing whether your water heater lasts or dies prematurely is water heater maintenance and the most important maintenance on your water heater is the “Anode Rod.” This rod protects your water heater from rust and cor-rosion. It is recommended by professional plumbers that you have your Anode rod inspected every two years or have it re-placed regularly every three to four years, depending on city water conditions and if you have a water softener or not. Once the rod is depleted, the tank will start to corrode, and will ultimately cause your tank to leak. At this point, the water heater will need to be replaced. It is also recommended that you flush the tank one to two times per year to help reduce sediment build-up and energy loss.

The Safekids.org website shares these safety guidelines for parents regarding water safety at home:

• Always close the doors to laundry rooms and bathrooms.

• Never keep water in large 5-gallon buckets at home; always empty them out, turn them upside down and store them out of reach of children.

• Make sure that toilet lids are always closed and use toilet-seat locks.

• Always completely drain the bathtub as soon as bath time is over.

It’s easy to find a long list of frugal tactics that work for a general audience.

You read through them, discard the majority of them that don’t apply to your life, and find the handful that is actually useful to you.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a personal frugal assistant who did this filtering for you, leaving you with just a few tips that actu-ally made a big difference in your life?

You actually do already have this. It’s called your social network.

Your friends know where you live. They know where you work. They know what you enjoy doing. They know the things that you like. You know the same things about them.

If there’s someone out there who’s going to be able to find a frugal tip that’s going to work for you and not bug you with some-thing useless, it’s a friend.

So, how do you get this trend started? You do it by sharing first.

Whenever you hear a frugal tip that seems like it would sync really well in the life of one of your friends, remember it and share it. Tell that friend about the tip. Facebook is a perfect avenue for this kind of thing.

Don’t over share. Stick to the frugal tactics that you are sure will be genuinely useful and new to the person you’re sending the tip to. Look for ones that really solve problems in their life, particularly ones that can be executed with minimal effort.

What you’ll find is that your friends will eventually begin sharing with you. They’ll look for tips that perfectly match your situation and share them. Some of them you will have heard, of course, but when you get a tactic that just fits your life to a tee, it can be a tremendous help.

Even better, this type of exchange is a form of “money buddy,” which means you’re mutually encouraging each other to remain frugal. A person who pops up every once in a while with a frugal tactic encourages you to keep thinking about it, not just as a money-saving and life-enhancing methodology, but as a social one, too.

Have your taxes prepared for free! VITA is United Way of Utah County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Anyone in Utah, Summit or Wasatch Counties with an income of $51,000 or below may be eligible to have their taxes prepared and filed for free by trained volunteers. Local volunteers are IRS certified and look for specific tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Volunteers help participants receive the best refund possible. United Way of Utah County’s VITA program is a part of a coalition with other nationwide financial institutions, nonprofit and government agencies and the “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!” program. Appointments are necessary and fill up quickly, please schedule as early as possible. Now through April 15, dial 2-1-1 to make an appointment or to find out more information about VITA. Quick Tips for Heart-Smart Cooking

To take good care of your heart, make sure you play it smart in the kitchen. Preparing and eating low-cholesterol, low-fat meals can help you reduce your blood cholesterol level. By lowering your cholesterol, you can reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. The best way to keep cholesterol in check is to avoid foods high in satu-rated and trans fat, which your body converts into cholesterol. Check food labels to avoid high-fat items. The American Heart Association offers these tips for low cholesterol cooking:

Meats

• Select lean cuts of meat, and trim off all visible fat before cooking.

• Broil rather than fry meats.

• Use a rack to drain off fat with broiling, roasting, or baking.

• Make gravies after the fat has hardened and can be removed from the liquid.

Vegetables

• Include vegetables with every meal.

• Use liquid vegetable oils or margarines to cook vegetables, brown meats, and make pancakes and waffles.

Cooking

• Serve moderate portions.

• Try dishes where meat is not the primary ingredient.

• Replace foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, with liquid vegetable oil or soft margarine.
