Take care,

as a little girl, i always wished i was born in the month of May simply because i loVeD the May birthstone – the emerald. My birthstone is the peridot. While both are beautiful and green gemstones, the emerald’s dark green color was my preference. When Pantone, the color authority, named emerald as the color of the year, i found myself in a quandary. in my mind, emerald was exclusive to jewelry and apparently many of you felt the same way. i repeatedly heard around town, “emerald won’t make it in St. louis…maybe the east and west coasts, but not here.” Well, my first emerald purchase was the Delonghi two-slice toaster from Sur la table (page 10), and it won’t be the last. remember in the Judy Garland movie “the Wizard of oz” when toto pulled the curtain back while oz was in the midst of his techno performance? imagine what the Wizard could do with today’s technology! once considered futuristic, wireless home automation systems have become more and more commonplace as the home systems have become less expensive and increasing available. no longer does a construction crew have to tear down walls to rewire. all that is needed is a smart phone or a tablet and a wireless connection! the options are limitless. if you are a little apprehensive of the new technology, start with products and accessories that will turn your home into a smart home (page 14). bruno l. David, owner of the bruno David Gallery in St. louis, says a smart home is also defined as a home filled with beautiful artwork. to our delight, this month’s suburban (page 36) and urban (page 44) home features both fit the bill. you will see varying degrees of color throughout both homes in combination with the artwork sure to catch your eye. the fictional residents of emerald City in the land of oz see the beauty of their capital through their emerald-green colored glasses. Fantasy, imagination and intelligence are not only essential in the fairy tale of oz, but in real life as well.

Lining the storefront on Euclid Avenue in the Central West End are samples portraying flowers, females and other traditional images through the colorful stained glass work. Look above and you’ll find Tiffany-style lamps hanging all around. You can also observe craftsman in the midst of making the stained glass right in the store. Gary Harris, along with his business partner, Jerry Mowery, founded Art Glass Unlimited in 1976 after learning the tricks of the trade from Harris’ family business that did stained glass work, as well. Gary handles the sales while Jerry lends his artistic abilities to create the beautiful works of art. “Jerry is the true artist,” Gary chuckles. “I’m just an art critic.” Jerry’s favorite part of the process is the painting work, especially the figures often seen in the designs of church windows. “It’s a little more specialized,” Jerry says. “We are one of the few companies in the city that can offer that type of work for a full-scale church.” The process of making these handmade works of art can take five to six weeks, starting with the client deciding the design of their glass art. Jerry says each client’s approach to choosing his or her custom design is different. Art Glass Unlimited can help in the selection process by showing clients design books of past work or displays in the store.

Timeless Art

If you thought stained glass windows were a thing of the past, you haven’t visited Art Glass Unlimited.

After the design is chosen, a small-scale sketch is created to determine the logistics, and is later followed by a full-size layout of the final design. Once a design is finalized, the types of glass available are discussed, such as color or opalescent glass, bevels, jewels, etc. The pattern is then cut into the different shapes and later the glass itself. The next step is to piece everything together. “It’s like putting a puzzle together,” Jerry says. The window gets glazed with lead to make it solid and is then waterproofed. The final step is to install the window. Residential popularity fluctuates, but church orders keep the business busy. When they do receive a home order, Jerry says it is often for the entryway, bathrooms, skylights, kitchen windows, wine cellars and entertainment rooms. Stained glass windows can add color and a unique quality to the house. “Stained glass windows are like a beautiful painting,” Gary says. “And if the windows are constructed properly they can last indefinitely.” Jerry says Art Glass Unlimited is one of the few companies in the city to offer this sort of work themselves, rather than ordering it out. Just like the works they create, Art Glass Unlimited is proving they’re timeless.

SLHL: What does a homeowner need to start the process of a home automation system?

Scott: our systems are designed around a single interface that is the same across any device. So, we can simply start with a smartphone (from apple or android) or a flat panel to provide the basis for a home automation system. a high-speed internet connection also helps with features like streaming music and remote access.

Navigatin}home technologYthe Soho Shop provides tailored solutions for your technology needs and desires.

SLHL: Can you add to an already existing home? How invasive is the process?

Scott: With the advancements in wireless technology, the Soho Shop is able to retrofit a majority of the automation technology into an existing home with little to no damage to wall surfaces and structure. however, items like hdtV’s and speakers require us to retrofit wire to maximize their quality and reduce wireless interference. When deploying a system, we do all the staging, pre-programming and testing for quality in our experience center prior to coming on-site, which dramatically reduces the amount of time in the customer’s home.

SLHL: How can a system simplify a homeowner’s life?

Scott: our motto is, “making one Button do it all,” which means we design systems to be extremely easy to operate. the lifestyle designers at the Soho Shop do just that, design around the family’s lifestyle. We have a thorough customer interview process, similar to an interior designer, to learn about the family: their habits, wants and desires. the best way to explain how automating your home simplifies your life is to give an example: you can roll over in bed and with the touch of one button close your garage door, turn off all of your homes lights, have your thermostat back down in an hour, set your security system insuring all your doors and windows are closed and locked, and turn the television on to your favorite program which will turn off automatically in an hour. that is one example, others would be never walking in to a dark home or having the ability to know exactly when your children come home even when you are at work, giving you peace of mind.

SLHL: Explain the difference between a wireless and a wired system. What are the capabilities of each?

Scott: Wireless technologies vary based on the type of automation we are installing. For example, we have wireless music systems that communicate like a laptop using Wi-Fi. other wireless technologies use a mesh network that allows each device in the system to communicate to each other, creating a stronger network. Wired technology has some distinct advantages over wireless in that they still provide faster communication between devices. they also do not require batteries like wireless technology.

SLHL: Do you have to have an iPhone or iPad to control? What can you control when you are not at home?

Scott: While apple technology plays a big part, our systems are compatible with android, Pc and mac. We can also provide other devices to control our systems, like handheld remotes for televisions, and wall-mounted keypads for quick access to specific tasks. the homeowner has the ability to control the entire automation system with their smartphone while they are at work or across the globe. they can adjust lights, arm and disarm the security system, view surveillance cameras, and control pretty much any device in their home that has an on/off switch!

SLHL: How do you adapt to changing technologies?

Scott: We start with a solid platform, built on the knowledge that technology does change frequently. With our technology we are able to remotely update existing systems with the latest and greatest when the homeowner feels the need starting with a small solution then adding on over time.

SLHL: What makes you unique in the industry?

Scott: our approach to doing business is what makes the Soho Shop unique. We realize the competitiveness of the buying market for electronics. the goal of the Soho Shop, unlike our competitors, is to provide a complete solution tailored to each customer’s needs and budget, in order to make them customers for life – not to sell, “boxes” of electronics. see www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

You’ll find a lot of France and a little bit of Disney at Vin de Set. The French influence is on the plate. The Disney is in the attitude, a can-do approach to whatever diners request. Chef Ivy Magruder offers three versions of his menu, including one that’s vegan-friendly and one that’s gluten-free. “Probably only 5 percent order off those menus, but that’s enough to warrant the extra work,” says Magruder, who learned the importance of catering to guests when he cooked in Orlando at the Flying Fish Cafe, a restaurant he describes as fine-dining, Disney-style. If a diner wants something

that Vin de Set’s kitchen lacks, Magruder will dispatch a staffer a few blocks to sister restaurant Eleven Eleven. “We beg, borrow, cheat and steal from Eleven Eleven,” he says. Magruder, who grew up in South St. Louis County, opened Eleven Eleven (named for its address, 1111 Mississippi Avenue) with owners Paul and Wendy Hamilton in 2003. They opened Vin de Set three years later, naming it phonetically for its address, 2017 Chouteau Avenue. (“Vingt dix-sept” is French for “twenty seventeen.”) At first, Vin de Set was “an American twist on a French bistro,”

Magruder says. “That was a safety net we didn’t need.” They dropped the American accent about three years ago. He’s honed the menu with the help of three visits to France. “Chefs were inviting us into their kitchens,” he explains. “They could not have been a nicer group.” Back home, he relies on Vin de Set’s servers to tell him what patrons like and what they would like to see more of. “I try to keep my mouth shut and my ears open more, the older I get,” he says. Semi-Boneless Half Game Hen and House-Made Sausage with Duck Confit •Cassoulet. “This solidifies what we try to accomplish here. It doesn’t get more French than this,” Magruder says. The cassoulet, made with navy beans, carrots, onions and tomatoes, is the soul of the dish, and the duck confit – cooked slowly in its own fat – is the heart of the cassoulet. “This one’s a labor of love,” he says. “It’s a slow and steady kind of dish.”

Prince Edward Island Mussels.• Earthy, grainy, house-made chistorra sausage, a slightly spicy tangle of peppers, and tangy tomato gastric complement sweet mussels in this Basque-style dish. “It really is the perfect dish,” Magruder says. “It all balances very well.”

• Tomato and Eggplant Napolean. “Napolean was very short, and he was very conscious of his height, so any time you create height or add height, it’s a Napolean,” Magruder explains. His version starts with rounds of eggplant that are soaked overnight in buttermilk, which removes every trace of bitterness and gives the cornmeal coating something to adhere to. After frying the eggplant, he adds layers of lightly roasted herbed tomatoes spread with goat cheese and fresh spinach, then tops the dish with a drizzle of balsamic reduction.

Rounded elements such as the ceiling and buffet pieces define the dining room. Rich in artwork, the dining room and Great room display the homeowners’ colorful collection of art. A tall sculptural piece, “Column” by Gretchen Wachs, was acquired at a Sante Fe art fair and creates height in the Great room.

A love fest. That is the way the owners describe the building of their nine-year-old Des Peres home. Even nearly a decade later, as they gather with the builder and architect to reminisce, compliment after compliment is passed around the table. Rarely is such chemistry between a home-building team, comprised of builder Roger Johnson,

architect Bill Cover and New Mexico-based interior designer Barbara Ellena, as strong as the union that built and designed this contemporary classic. “When we all got together, it just clicked,” the homeowner says.” After stumbling upon the empty lot on the market by Johnson Development, the homeowners immediately began discussing ideas

a challenge.” Barbara, owner of Mathews Design Associates, was also brought in early on in the building process. She has worked with the couple on previous home projects including a mountain home in Colorado. “The homeowners are such visionaries,” she says. “They like things a little

with Roger and Bill, who have worked together for nearly 30 years. Knowing they wanted a contemporary home, they approached Roger to see if their ideas were something he could build. “You don’t get the opportunity in St. Louis to do a lot of contemporary/modern stylings,” Roger says. “It was fun and interesting. Definitely

different and more on the contemporary side, yet still classic.” Even with Barbara out of state, the project came together quickly. As ideas and plans formed, the team threw out the traditional notions of how a home functions and opened the door to the unexpected. Approaching the front of the home, one can immediately see that while classic, this home isn’t your typical build. Oversized unusual bricks blanket the exterior of the home while a Brazilian slate tile walkway leads you to the front door. Opening the door, you immediately feel the Frank Lloyd Wright influence. Natural and organic, the interior of the home is unified with the outdoor landscape forming an interrelated composition. Elegant yet comfortable while warm and inviting, the homeowners sought an easy flow between rooms with an open approach. To achieve the open look while still creating a cozy home, architect Bill Cover blurred the lines between rooms with furniture pieces, not walls. “We deviated from traditional notions of doors and walls and came up with a creative solution,” Bill says. The brightest example can be seen upon entering the home. An inviting dining room cove is set apart from the entry and great room with two rounded buffets. Topped with sculptural pieces by Daryls Ewoldt, the buffets serve multiple purposes. Not only do they define the space, they also provide additional storage and are great for serving while entertaining, which the homeowners do often. The round, lighted cove ceiling further defines the dining space. The curved wall of windows in the dining room overlooks the lush landscaped backyard and pool area. An oversized round dining table

seats ten and creates a cozy feeling in the space. “The round table builds camaraderie and conversation,” the homeowner says. When not dining around the round table, the homeowners’ family, friends and guests hang out in the conjoined kitchen and hearth room. Just off the dining room, the space provides the ideal view into the serene backyard. A barrel ceiling painted in rich clay keeps the hearth room from feeling too expansive. A custom wood light rail with mahogany details brings the ceiling down while warming the space. A fiery toned canvas, “Abstraction,” by Jeffrey Keith joins a family of handmade fiber dolls, created by the homeowners’ daughter, to liven the floor-to-ceiling fireplace. The red tones of the painting carry down to the Dakota Jackson boxer sofa and love seat in Donghia fabric. An additional fiber doll sits cozily in a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired barrel chair by Boyd & Dreith. Across from the wall of windows a custom-built wood entertainment piece doubles as a divide between the hearth room and the laundry area. Sharing the open space with the hearth room is the kitchen and breakfast nook. A custom and colorful dining table from Axi Furniture is a picturesque spot for dining. With a direct view to the patio and pool, natural light pours into the space. In the kitchen, light maple cabinets and trim pop against the burnt orange walls, while a large, Bordeaux granite-topped island is ideal for food preparation or seating guests. When designing their home, the homeowners knew the kitchen had to be great for entertaining. “Everyone hangs in the kitchen, so we made sure it was big enough to accommodate,” the homeowner says. The copper backsplash creates

texture when paired against the maple cabinetry. The soft maple continues into the entryway of the home with an exquisite custom door, which lets in natural light through various windows. New-Mexico based interior designer Barbara even suggested a small square copper accent to pull in the copper backsplash of the kitchen. Beautifully lit, the focal point of the entry is another Jeffrey Keith painting, “Triptych.” Much of the homeowners’ artwork and furnishings come from Colorado and Sante Fe, two places Barbara has a close connection with. To ensure the project stayed on schedule, Barbara would preview the furnishings being built outside the St. Louis area to prevent any glitches. In working with her clients on previous projects, she knew their style and what they liked.

“Barbara has the ability to quickly hone in on our style and really hit the mark with this home,” the homeowner says. “She sent us boxes of sample materials and selections and asked us to separate into two boxes… a box we liked and one we disliked. We put everything but two items in the like box and sent it back.” Custom designed rugs by Joan Weissman warm the floors throughout the home, including the entryway. Barbara was able to visit Weissman’s studio in Santa Fe and work directly with her to design each rug. Opposite the entry is the home’s great room. Sage green mousson sofa and chairs in mohair fabric by Holly Hunt are the ideal place to curl up in front of the fire. But it is a colorful painting to the side of the marble fireplace that draws the eye. With its bold punches of red and black, the commissioned piece by Robert Kelly, “Shebia Ruz XXXVIII,” is

a favorite of both the homeowners and the designer. “We loved the color and detail in the painting,” the homeowners say. “Barbara was able to have it produced in the size we need for the space." Following the extra wide hallway from the great room leads past a quaint guest room to the master suite. “The extra width we added to the hallways keeps the space feeling contemporary,” Cover says. Serene tones of blues, purples and grays in the master are accented with bold pops of burnt orange. A large ottoman covered in dragon fly fabric sits between two Donghia mohair chairs. The seating area, placed against the curved wall windows, provides the perfect view, blurring the line between indoors and out. “We were inspired by nature when designing our master suite,” says the homeowner. “We wanted to bring the outdoors in.”

Incorporating nature and their surroundings into the homeowners’ love of contemporary, the design dream team stayed true to the goal of creating a warm and welcoming environment. Now, nine years after it all began the contemporary design has not dated. “The time that has passed since we have completed the home is really a testament to the design,” Barbara says. “It is classic.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Chase-in} THE GOOD LIFE

by BarB Wilson PhotogrAPhy by anne Matheis

When maintaining his large contemporary home in Kirkwood took more time and effort than he was willing to spend any longer, the owner began looking for an alternative. As senior vice president and branch manager for a major St. Louis-based brokerage and banking investment firm, he spends one week each month in his secondary residence, a high-rise in New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center. In his “spare” time, he’s a patron of the arts, serving on the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission and Shakespeare Festival board; is an investor in on- and off-Broadway productions; and has been involved with organizations providing support services to AIDS patients in both cities for more than two decades. His appreciation for the vibrant urban lifestyle ultimately drew him to the newly renovated Private Residences at the Chase Park Plaza. “I wanted convenience and service,” he remembers. “Here, I’m just 10 minutes from my office in Clayton. I don’t have to leave the building to go to the gym, the theater, or a restaurant; Forest Park is just across the street; and for concierge services, I simply pick up the phone.” The clincher, however, was the towering views, which are truly spectacular day and night! – extending westward to the Missouri River bluffs, east to Busch Stadium and the Arch, and on a clear day, all the way north to Alton. Although nearly completed at the time, the 2,320-square-foot luxury condominium the owner chose still allowed him to make a few design changes. The challenge was to integrate his preference for the “simplicity and functionality” of contemporary design with his genuine respect for the Chase’s historic Deco styling. The result is a visually satisfying blend of modern and traditional furnishings that might best be described as transitional.

An eye-catching contemporary light fixture and a colorful glass stele found at an art fair in Breckenridge, Co. add interest to the casual seating area.

At the left is a 6-foot-square, untitled canvas in muted tones from Argentina. Seated in the foreground is “Frank,” a life-size art mannequin. The ultimate in whimsy, Frank can be found at the piano or in any room of the home, depending on the day.

Cue the Lights. A devotee of top-notch stage productions, the owner first focused on the interior lighting system. The condominium’s 14-foot ceilings could easily accommodate elaborate chandeliers, but that wasn’t the open, uncluttered look he was trying to achieve. His solution was a sophisticated system of controlled overhead LED lights that provides adjustable, unobtrusive illumination throughout the home. With windows on three sides, natural daylight is abundant, and removal of the dropped ceilings on this particular floor during renovation had revealed an extra row of architectural windows, long hidden and unique to this level of the Chase Park Tower. Since privacy wasn’t an issue at this height, the owner chose see-through mesh shades and solar window film to reduce glare without obstructing the views. A Backstage Tour. It might seem unusual to begin a tour of this elegant home in the master suite, but the privacy area offers considerable insight into the owner’s multifaceted personality. In the access hallway is a clever three-dimensional street scene, entitled “The Neon Lights Shine Bright on Broadway,” by Charles Fazzino, a highly collected pop artist. On the opposing wall hangs an expressionist oil painting of Forest Park. The juxtaposition of seemingly disparate pieces like these occurs throughout the home, illustrating the owner’s appreciation for all types of artwork. “When I see something I like, I buy it,” he explains simply. In the master bedroom, an abstract by local artist Jim Pegg tops the mahogany sleigh bed. Clean-lined marble lamps on the mahogany side chests add a Deco touch; a built-in mahogany desk unit fills one corner; and wine-hued upholstery and bedding lend rich color to the space. Dozens of framed Broadway playbills – only a small portion of the owner’s collection – blanket the walls of the sumptuous master bath, and a large charcoal, by Joe Federer and purchased from Drew Wojcik Gallery in downtown St. Louis, enhances the tub alcove. The Performance Area. Deftly fielding interview questions while simultaneously accepting catering deliveries, the owner explained that he’d be hosting a party for 40 guests the following evening. Completely open from the foyer to the island kitchen, living room, dining and casual seating areas, this view-packed, art-filled home is well suited to entertaining. The living room’s focal point is a gleaming custom-designed granite fireplace, flanked by display-lit custom shelving and surmounted by a self-portrait of Edward Boccia, the late modernist painter, poet and Washington University professor.

Upholstered in a combination of soft teal-and-beige damask and ribbed silk, the sofas are grouped around a streamlined glass coffee table that rests on one of two muted wool rugs from Pakistan with a worn, beaten look. The entertainment space also showcases an American antique secretary in crotch mahogany that the owner has cherished for more than 30 years. Atop the secretary are several antique santos figures, which he collects. The pièce de résistance, however, may be the K. Kawai baby grand player piano, which operates from an iPod and has been equipped with internal stereo speakers that can provide orchestral accompaniment. A 60-inch glass top was fabricated for the nickel dining table base, purchased by the owner in New York, and a set of walnut Chippendale chairs that formerly belonged to his mother completes the dining ensemble. When needed, the sofa table has a flip-top that provides additional seating for larger dinner parties. In the Wings. With no need for a guest suite, (“I have 435 guest bedrooms right next door!” he quips), the owner converted the second bedroom to an office/AV room. His custom desk unit and flat-screen TV occupy one wall, and the remaining walls display an eclectic collection of outdoor scenes, including watercolors by James Godwin Scott, a vintage park tableau, and a large painting of hunting dogs. Curtain Call. For this engaging, well-traveled professional, his Private Residence at the Chase has proven the ideal urban lifestyle – convenient, dynamic, maintenance-free, and a luxurious setting for his many treasured acquisitions. Better yet, his creative approach to interior design reflects his personal taste, cosmopolitan interests, passion for the arts – and even his whimsical sense of humor, while still paying homage to the Chase’s dignified styling. To which we can only respond with an emphatic, “Bravo!” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

The circular brick patio provides the centerpiece for outdoor entertaining. Carol has lined it with pots of herbs, annuals and perennials and comfortable places to sit. A sculptural fountain next to a flagstone pathway adds to the sound of splashing water to the garden's ambiance. Beyond the fountain, flowering oak leaf hydrangeas soften the privacy fence. the past eight years, Carol has taken the small, 50-by-70-foot space and filled it with 12 small specimen

trees, flowering vines, lush shrubs, perennials and annuals, all set out in curvaceous, boxwood-edged beds that line three sides of the landscape. “I’m having the best part of my life right now,” she says as she strolls around the perimeter of her yard, pulling an occasional weed and gathering a fallen twig or two. At the same time she just happens to mention that last December, she celebrated her 80th birthday. “It’s never too late to have something special and something interesting in your life,” she adds in affirmation. Carol knew from the moment she set eyes on the green space that would become her garden, what could be done. She and her husband Gordon were house hunting. Both had been married previously and they wanted a home with no ties to either of their lives. They happened to pass by a University City home “For Sale by Owner.” When they knocked on the door and were invited in, Carol was immediately hooked, but not by the home’s interior. She took one look through a

huge, arched picture window in the dining room and saw, perfectly framed, the yard in back. It was, she recalls, “a yard lacking in personality but filled with potential. We bought the house.” For Carol the beautifully situated landscape was a chance to return to the gardening roots of her childhood, when she delighted in being around Carter, who worked as a gardener for her great-grandfather Henry Young. “My great-grandfather said he hired Carter because he had holes in the knees of his pants, not in the seat. He (Carter) was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met,” she notes, recalling the infinite patience he showed as he taught her how to root cuttings and create new plants. The idea of creating a garden was particularly appealing, she adds, following time spent raising four children and “a lot of years not owning land.” While she claims to be an “absolute amateur” when it comes to garden design and plant selection, Carol makes it clear that she never hesitates to “ask a thousand questions” at garden centers and quickly

Above: A recently introduced, double, red orange coneflower 'Hot Papaya' adds punch to the garden. Rows of small boxwoods define the sweep of garden beds as Murphy takes a snooze on a garden bench. Opposite page, top: St. Francis of Assisi welcomes visitors amidst laurels, hydrangeas, snow on the mountain and trailing gold lysimachia. run to the “plant doctor” desk at the Missouri Botanical Garden with a leaf or a twig that looks as if it might be in distress. She also is quick to try new plant material and, if something doesn’t do well, to move it into what she terms “the hospital,” an area to the side of the garden that she can watch carefully. The garden design is her own. She began by filling in the center of a circular brick patio at the back of the house that had contained a birdbath and pachysandra. From there she worked to give the garden graceful, curving lines by outlining shapes with a garden hose and eventually defining those arcs with brick edging and small evergreen boxwoods, determined to make the space as attractive in the winter as it was in spring, summer and fall. As time went on, Carol added stepping stone pathways, a sculptural fountain, an arbor and finally a Fond du Lac stone walkway from the front steps of the house to the back garden gate. Privacy fencing softened by shrubs and flowering vines keeps the garden secluded and calm. The space is small enough that each tree, shrub and vine can draw individual

attention from both Carol and garden visitors. She is quick to point out the serviceberry, tri-colored beech, topiary holly, miniature crab apple and “dear little Korean lilac.” She delights in trying and pointing out new plants such as a shade-loving aucuba, with its evergreen yellow speckled green leaves that will thrive in a protected spot in St. Louis gardens; an akebia, also known as a white flowering chocolate vine; and a double, fiery orange coneflower called ‘Hot Papaya.’ The addition of watering and lighting systems keeps the garden refreshed during the day and luminous at night. For Carol, who describes herself as a “go-go, high-energy, people person,” working in the garden is her “quiet downtime. I actually prefer working all by myself,” she says. “It’s where I recuperate. “It fills all my emotional needs,” she adds, pointing to a garden sign on a ceramic plate reading: All my hurts my garden spade can heal. “I’ve had an eight-year love affair with this garden and the wonderful husband who made it possible.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

It’s so St. Louis. Hometown sports memorabilia and unexpected collectibles deliver character to a basement office exhibiting the latest in innovative home automation technology. In honing his space, the ultimate man cave, Walbrandt Technologies owner Aaron Walbrandt achieved the perfect synthesis of sophisticated and simple by merging new with old to create an uber functional after-hours workplace. “Any small business owner knows the workday doesn’t end at five” says Walbrandt. In a demanding era of iPhones and cloud technology, Walbrandt needed a practical homestead hideaway for

Occupational OrgAnIzATIOn Occupational OrgAnIzATIOn Modern electronics and quirky souvenirs give this high-tech, masculine office unmatched personality.

all his off-the-clock tasks. That’s why, when designing a modest basement home office, Walbrandt opted for simple colors, fun décor and a mix of standard and cutting-edge technology. All the basics are present and accounted for: computer, printer, landline phone and fax rest atop a spacious maple desk with a soft, voluptuous curve and industrial metal legs. The desk, like the technology it holds, is a fusion of classic and contemporary. "The home office is connected to our whole-house system,” Walbrandt explains. The set-up allows for cordless access to a music server, a Kaleidescape movie server and Direct TV. The beauty of a home automation system becomes immediately apparent when one notices there’s just a single cord creeping up from behind his desk. “There’s virtually no clutter,” says Walbrandt. “All systems are controlled from a smart phone or tablet, and that ubiquitous mess of cords we all dislike is hidden in a single, centralized place.” This state-of-the-art automation system is grounded with classic technology. “The old school stuff is making a huge comeback,” he says. Open the custom built-in McMillin Cabinetmakers maple cabinets,

and you’ll find a record player and compact disk player connected to a two-way receiver. “This isn’t a modern system by any means,” Walbrandt adds, “but it sounds great.” Walbrandt’s affinity for music and sports vitalize the space, adding depth and color to an otherwise neutral palette. The color scheme, like the décor, is virile; khaki walls and a beige sound-absorbing cork floor submit to Walbrandt’s prized, mostly local mementos – framed albums, Brett Hull and Wayne Gretzky hockey sticks, even a guitar signed by The Flaming Lips that Walbrandt scored at The Pageant. A Rams football helmet and autographed bats from recent Cardinals World Championships are carefully arranged on the bookshelf. Nearby, a pair of Matt Holliday’s cleats sparkles beneath recessed lighting. Walbrandt refers to the space as “a mini-museum of stuff my wife doesn’t want lying around the house” – which, perhaps, is how this particular home office, an otherwise ordinary room, has evolved into a space that’s every bit as personal and charming as it is functional. Is there any other time of year that you hear the word lamb as much as around Easter, when it is probably enjoyed at more american dinner tables than any other meat?

In the U.S., oven-roasted leg of lamb, traditionally accompanied by mint jelly, or broiled lamb chops au jus are the usual preparations. But, in South australia at Easter the lamb, which is ubiquitous in both australia and New Zealand, is usually barbecued with the family gathered outside for the Easter meal. Most often it’s Saltbush Lamb. Saltbush is a native plant rich in minerals and nutrients that give australian lambs an especially flavorful taste and tenderness.

at Kay Brothers, the oldest family-owned winery in the McLaren Vale appellation of South australia, the Easter repast of Saltbush Lamb, with a fresh garden salad and freshly harvested corn, is a tradition that happily pairs extremely well with their award-winning Shirazes, especially the highly rated Block 6, hillside and Basket-Pressed labels.

the feast is usually enjoyed on an old wooden table outside their family’s traditional fieldstone and wood homestead, which dates back to the late

1890s when the winery was founded by the grandfather and grand-uncle of the present owners. today, brothers Colin and Bill Kay, along with sister alice and all of their spouses, children and grandchildren, enjoy the picturesque surroundings, not only during holidays like Easter but also for picnics and weekend gatherings that brings all the generations together exactly where their ancestors celebrated Easter and the harvest.

Strange though it may seem to us as we’re looking towards the end of winter, early april is actually the start of fall in the southern hemisphere – and also harvest time. harvest not only for grapes, but also fruits like fresh figs. Kay Brothers have many fig trees. they favor the White adriatic fig, which has a light greenish-yellow skin and a very attractive deep pink flesh. the flavor leans towards strawberries and makes a terrific accompaniment for the local cheese board, usually featuring a brie from the adelaide hills, due northwest, and a ricotta from Kangaroo Island, which is about 60 miles south of McLaren Vale. along with locally grown fruits like apples and pears, the cheeses, and some tasty aussie port), are the perfect end to the “al fresco” Easter feast. see www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Minimalist, functional and simplistic, Scandinavian design began to emerge in the late 1920s. Originating in the European countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, the height of the design movement came into focus after World War II. The introduction of mass production paired with the increased availability of new, low-cost materials following the war allowed for furnishings to be high quality and accessible to everyday people. Often referred to as democratic design, Scandinavian furnishings

Appealing, accessible and affordable to the masses,Scandinavian furnishings focus on the form of the furniture

By Melissa Mauzy

DemocraticDesignappealed to the masses and were affordable. Fluid lines, unusual shapes and lots of color characterize Scandinavian furniture design. More attention was placed on the functionality of the furniture pieces. Storage compartments and slide out elements in tables were incorporated. While functional, beauty in design was not compromised. Furniture was almost thought of as art. Fusing glass, metal, wood, plastics and other materials made modern designs. The Scandinavian people desired bright, light and practical furniture to incorporate into their environments to brighten the space during

their long winters. Scandinavian countries have a rich history in woodworking, so the furniture designs effectively converge traditional woodworking techniques with modern technology. The contemporary, innovative and streamlined qualities of Scandinavian design continues to be cutting edge and in high demand in today's fast-paced societies. 78 APRIL 2013 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Historic houses are beautiful, with their high ceilings, intricate moldings and gracious Old World touches. They’re not always practical, however, especially when it comes to kitchens and baths, where modern layouts, plumbing, fixtures and materials are not just stylish but essential to daily life. But that doesn’t mean that fans of stately old homes need to forego the classic. Given knowledgeable contractors and experienced interior designers, these charming old spaces can be given a facelift that adds the best of the new while preserving the past. That’s exactly what happened when Janet and Guy Stevenson teamed with Emily Castle, ASID, of Castle Design to overhaul the master bath in their Central West End home. Built in 1905, the federal-style house featured a master suite that included a bedroom and a sitting room linked by a small bathroom. But not long after the couple moved in, “it became apparent that the floor plan was not going to work for us,” says Janet. The bathroom featured just a sink, toilet and tub—no shower—and, like many historic homes, the closet space was minimal. “We had clothes spread out all over the house,” laughs Janet. Enter Emily. Both a space planner and an interior designer, she rearranged the space, moving the bathroom into the sitting room and transforming the original bathroom into a spacious walk-in closet. With the help of Patrick Moore Construction, a contractor who specializes in the CWE’s historic homes, walls were moved, plaster and lath was torn

out, and plumbing was extended to the old sitting room. “It was a big gut to remodel the space,” says Janet. The new, spacious bath combines elements of old and new. The double vanity, freestanding angled tub, and separate shower and water closet would be at home in any newly constructed home, and the clean lines of the cabinetry, streamlined chandelier and floating vanity lend a distinctly modern vibe. But other touches fit right in with the rest of the house: the gray marble that was chosen to mimic the same material in the house’s other bathrooms, the vanity’s crystal hardware that recalls doorknobs throughout the home, and the original windows and fireplace—one of nine—that were retained. “We wanted to maintain the integrity of the house,” Emily explains. “It wasn’t necessary to cover up the fireplace to get everything we wanted in the space. And I prefer to leave them.” Additionally, Emily and Janet “were looking for luxury and comfort when making our selections [for finishes and fixtures],” Emily continues. “But they still had to be appropriate to the style of the house.” “It blends seamlessly,” agrees Janet. “It has a crisp modern feel but with very traditional elements. It’s made our lives so much more organized and functional. We’re absolutely thrilled.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Places to go, things to do and see and PeoPlewho are leaving their mark on the world of style.

Serving as the nation's capital as well as the economic center, Budapest is the largest city in Hungary. Recognized for its striking and innovative ar-chitectural style, Budapest is considered one of the most idyllic places to live in Europe. Budapest is a combination of three cities, Buda, Obuda and Pest, located across the Danube River from one another. In 1873, the three cities unified to create present-day Budapest.

Mattias Church is located on the Buda side of the Danube. The Goth-ic-style exterior of the church was added in 1896. The interior features works by two outstanding 19th-century Hungarian painters, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely. Across the Dabune on the Pest side, the Parliament Building is one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings. Constructed in the Gothic Revival style, it has a symmetrical facade and a central dome.

The Museum of the City of New york recently unveiled an exhibition of innovative design solutions to better accommodate city dwellers. One feature of the exhibit is a full-scale, furnished micro-studio apartment. At only 325 square feet, the exhibit uses transformable furniture, such as tables, beds and seating to utilize space effectively and creatively. The idea

behind the exhibit was to address the city of New york’s need for housing a growing number of single adults. The Making Room exhibition originated with the launch of New york City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s report that projected the city’s residents to increase by one million by 2030.

In 2008, after standing vacant for nearly 30 years, the St. Louis Municipal Power House building in downtown St. Louis opened as the new regional offices of Cannon Design. In 2007, the firm purchased the 19,000 sf building—providing all design, development and construction management services for its restoration, renovation and adaptive reuse. The revamped LEED Gold Power House features a three-story gallery formed by constructing two partial levels that, combined with the existing

two floors and rooftop penthouse, create a total of 32,000 sf of office and conference space designed to facilitate the firm's highly collaborative, team-oriented work approach. The floors are set back from the building's spectacular, original windows to maintain the building's sense of transparency and volume and to create gallery space for the community as well as for corporate functions.
