While crafting the school district’s budget remains challenging, CV

Day, and Friday, May 24, prior to Memorial Day. Both days could be used as make-up days in the event of weather cancellations.

Another change in the 2012-13 schedule involves elementary conferences in the fall. Instead of one early dismissal day and a day off, elementary students will be dismissed early each day Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. There is no change to secondary schedules.

The board also approved nine early dismissal days, generally the third or fourth Wednesday of each month, for staff meetings.

Students will again be dismissed early before Thanksgiving break (Nov. 21) and have three days off (Nov. 22-26). Students will have seven days off between Christmas and New Year’s (Dec. 24-Jan. 1). Spring break is scheduled for March 29 to April 1.

such as expanded full-day kindergarten and needed maintenance projects.

Overall, the board is working to close a $1.4 million shortfall, brought about by a combination of rising pension costs and declining tax revenues. School directors are committed to broad-based reductions rather than targeted eliminations and to avoid furloughs or layoffs through staff attrition (retirements or resignations).

The district will realize savings by reorganizing the administrative team and eliminating positions such as assistant technology manager and music/gifted education supervisor.

FACT OF THE SEMESTER:

However, the board is able to add kindergarten faculty, reading support staff and a stipend to permit an existing teacher to serve as music coordinator.

The reorganization may mean the district can no longer offer strings to third-graders. However, the district expects to be able to offer full-day kindergarten to more than half of all kindergarten students.

“Such a strategy limits the Board’s options, but they have still managed to stay on course and keep our organization in good financial and programmatic health,” Huesken said.

Revenues remain sluggish. Property assessment appeals and the conversion of Harrisburg Area Community College to tax-exempt status, for example, may cost the district more than $500,000 in 2012-13. To offset some losses, the board is likely to

increase parking and facility rental fees, refinance a bond issue and

reduce the school calendar to 180 student days.

The school board hosted three forums on the district’s budget to talk with CV residents and gauge the community’s priorities.

The Music Man To Visit CVHSMusical hits stage April 13-15

There may not be seventy-six trombones leading a parade, but there

will surely be lots of music to hit the stage at Conestoga Valley High School for this year’s spring musical, “The Music Man.”

“It’s surely going to be a spectacular show,” says new director Jill Gagliano, “that is different from past CV productions.”

The show stars senior Gideon Hess as Professor Harold Hill, a con man who rolls

into River City, Iowa, peddling a band, selling

instruments and skipping town with the cash. Along the way he falls in love with up-tight librarian Marian Paroo, played by junior Alex Soberick, and transforms the stubborn Iowans to hopeful believers. Gagliano says that this musical has so much magic in it just because of the time period it is set in.

“This was the turn of the century with railroads and electricity just beginning to unfold—before they even hit the east coast,” she says.” And it has a twist that isn’t your typical love story.”

Gagliano says this completely different, fun-filled production is sure to leave you

standing when the curtain falls.Gagliano is not new to CV Drama

productions, having served as choreographer for the past 11

years. In her place comes CVHS graduate and professional

dancer Travis Love to lead the show’s choreography.

Cast members say the

CVMS to StageThe Last GladiatorConestoga Valley’s budding playwright

is at it again.Junior Peter Fenton, who wrote CVMS’s

2010 play, is this year serving as assistant director to long-time Conestoga Valley Middle School play director Suzanne Fisher. He also wrote a few new scenes for this year’s play, “The Last Gladiator,” which hits the stage at CVMS March 30 and 31.

Helping to direct the production is part of Fenton’s graduation project and a big help to Fisher, who says she has been able to spend more time on things like set design while Fenton ran rehearsals.

“It’s like working with another faculty member,” she says. “We think alike, we agree on everything. I have total confidence in Peter.”

Fenton asked just to assist with directing, but right away Fisher told him she was looking to add additional scenes. Fisher directed Fenton’s original work “Good Knight and Good Luck” two years ago.

“I thought, ok, what can I do that would add lots of people,” Fenton recalls, hoping to give more members of the large cast additional speaking roles. “I came up with some things that are throwbacks to ‘Good Knight,’” including

as a princess forced by her father’s decree to marry the last gladiator standing in the upcoming games—a predicament no headstrong, intelligent feminist leader wants. With the devious Senator Altilis, played by Dreux Okonski, breathing down her neck, she and her maid, Anna Clemens, set to training peasant thief Gladius, Preston Gaines, to avoid marrying the brainless brute favored to win. Gladius’ sidekicks Minimus, Hanniel Adidala, and Julia, Peyton Erb, hatch a plan to rig the
