Hundreds of us spread the hope of Christ to children and adults across our city every week by feeding hungry people, clothing people in need, teaching children and adults to read and write, as-sisting victims of violence, shelter-ing homeless people and offering radical hospitality in a number of other ways. Several of the organi-zations with which we serve are dependent on the generosity of our time, patience and skills to staff the opportunities they offer; and they are also dependent on our financial generosity to keep these ministries afloat. The recent closure of a long-standing local institution of hope to young girls in our city serves as a stark re-minder of the importance of our financial support to assure the viability of on-going ministry to people in need. The benefactor of our Easter Offering for Inner-City Missions in 2012 will be the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center. Housed within the walls of this

easily recognized edifice on the corners of Fourth, Market and Princess Streets are the ministries of Cape Fear Habitat for Human-ity, Phoenix Employment Minis-tries, Communities In Schools, Christian Womens Job Corp., Philippians 3 Ministry and five other organizations that touch people and our environment with the hopeful and healing hand of God. Our own Vickie Dull is now guiding the rudder of this ministry center that bears the name of a former member of our congrega-tion that has been transformed from an earthly being into a eter-nal resident of heaven. Mrs. Harrelson spent her years among us touching lives with the grace, inspiration and love of Jesus. The people that enter her house seek-ing help leave transformed by her legacy. It is our blessing to be a part of seeing that that legacy lives for a long time. We will play a large role in doing just that by reaching our goal of $7,500.

helped raise both of our chil-dren, Brett and Amy, and even now, you are helping to raise our granddaughter, Kamryn. Many of you have asked about our plans for the future. So here they are…just kidding. We don’t yet know. All we do know at this point is that we hope to stay in Wilmington and at First Baptist. Of course, it will be in a different role. But you will see us around from time to time. One thing I plan to do is go hear some of my buddies preach on Sun-days. (Bobbie is not really excited about that.) Our staff has encouraged us to stay con-nected with them and with the church. We plan to do just that. Of course, when a new pastor is welcomed, we will stay away long enough for his or her family to get settled in. What we will need more than anything else is your contin-ued prayers as we figure out the future. And we join with all of you in praying for our church in this transition time, including the search process later this year. God has al-ready prepared someone to have the marvelous privilege that I had…that of be-ing...your pastor. Grace & Peace, Mike Queen

As you might imagine, the last few weeks have been filled with a litany of things I am “doing for the last time” as pastor of First Baptist. Those moments are always bitter-sweet…at least they are for me. I remember my last day at Tradewell Supermarkets (our family business). At 6 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon in June of 1978 I handed my keys to the manager of our flagship store and walked out the front door. I drove around for an hour or more trying to “get my head together.” As certain as I was that God was calling me into the ministry, it was in-credibly hard to leave some-thing I loved as much as the supermarket business. It will be just as difficult to leave the work to which I have been called in this place, too, because I love this work as much as anything I have ever done. But as surely as God called me into ministry, and as surely as this church called me to be her pastor, God has also given me a sense of peace about giving up the day-to-day responsibilities of the pastor-ate. But I will miss it…probably more than I know. Twenty-five years is a long time…way beyond the aver-age for most churches and ministers. Hopefully, that says something about both of us. Thank you for giving Bobbie and me the privilege of serv-ing alongside all of you. You have loved and supported us through the deaths of our fa-thers and of my sister. You

Touch Japan with the hope of Jesus The enduring image of the devasta-tion caused by the earthquake and tsunami and the real possibility of a nuclear catastrophe to follow has changed life for the residents of Japan forever. Baptists from North Carolina left the security of our homeland to evaluate the destruc-tion caused by the earthquake within hours of its occurrence. The appraisals of the damage and the needs are beyond description. The NC Baptist Disaster Relief Team is

cooperating with two of our partner mission organizations (The Baptist World Alliance and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) to assist the Japanese Baptist Convention to reach disaster victims with food, water and recovery efforts. To pro-vide a monetary gift to these efforts, you may designate your offering to “Japanese Disaster Relief,” and every cent will be channeled through our church to the NC Bap-tist Disaster Relief efforts in Japan.

Community LIFE

Sharing Life Together “They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.” - Acts 2:42 (The Message)

Welcome New Members!

Olivia Flowers has matured spiritually to the point that she has a grasp of the sacrifice that Jesus made in giving his earthly life in order that she would attempt to live like him on earth and spend eternity with him in heaven. This is a natural progression for Olivia in that she has spent the entirety of her life as a part of our congregation and has witnessed unconditional love in her home where her parents, Melaney and Jay Flowers, have lived out their faith in Christ be-fore her. Olivia is in the third grade at South Topsail Elementary School.

Lane Fullager engaged in the fellowship and disci-pleship ministries of our church through our Youth Ministry and has come to the point in his life whereby he wants to follow Christ by being baptized. He attends UNCW now and can be found serving as an assistant around our Activities Center al-most every afternoon/evening. Lane attended Laney High School where he was introduced to First Baptist Church and Christ by the outreach ministry of Christian Davis.

Blake Hunter was introduced to First Baptist Church as a six-week-old infant when his parents presented him to the congregation and committed to

living out the love of Christ in their home and teach-ing him the verities of the Christian faith back in June of 2000. Now, almost eleven years later, Blake has come to the point in his life whereby he has embraced the faith for himself and has been baptized. He is in the fifth grade at Ogden Elementary School and under-stands that he has only begun the journey of following Jesus. His parents are Melissa and Bill Hunter.

Parker Tanner enjoys playing baseball almost as much as he likes taking part in the various aspects of our Children’s Ministry. First Baptist has been a part of his life since infancy, and he has grown in his understanding of God’s love for him by observing his parents and taking part in our Sunday School Ministry. He is ten years old and is in the fourth grade. Parker’s parents are Amy and Jeff Tanner. Parker is excited about being baptized soon.

Tom Maultsby has been worshipping with us for almost twenty years but has never become an “official” member until recently. He relocated to Wilming-ton from Santa Monica, California, where he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Tom comes to us by transfer of his membership of this sister church.

Sharing Life Together (con’t) Continued from page 3 Mary Beth and Steve Henderson along with their chil-dren, Hunter and Alex-andra, have joined us by trans-fer of their member-ship from a sister church in our city. Mary Beth and Steve are also parents to Walker and Stevie. Mary Beth has owned and operated dance studios for years and taught hundreds of children to dance and perform with confidence. She is now the choreographer and director for Upper Room Theater and assists in productions at Thalian Hall. Steve is employed by Brame and has been involved in ministry to children and teenagers for several years. Hunter is a senior at Coastal Christian High School. Alex-andra is a freshman at Coastal Christian. Walker is a fourth grader and Stevie is in the second grade at Holly Tree Elementary School. The Hender-sons have been worshipping with us for over a year.

Garrett Manning has confessed faith in Christ and was baptized recently. Garrett has been taught Bi-bles stories and witnessed stories of faith through the ministry of First Baptist since his birth. He takes part in all aspects of our Chil-dren’s Ministry. Garrett enjoys playing all sports and hanging out with his FBC friends. He attends Holly Tree Elementary School where he is in the third grade. Garrett’s parents are Robin and Chris Manning. His grand-parents are Gloria and Willis Manning.

Allison Boggs came to Wil-mington as an infant and has grown into a fine young lady of fourteen years and a de-voted follower of Jesus. She has expressed her faith in Christ and desire to follow him by being baptized. As an

eighth grader at Noble Middle School, Allison enjoys taking part in our Youth Ministry. She is seldom seen without her smile and her friends. Allison’s parents are Rebecca and Robert Boggs.

Conner and Collin Meadows have spent their childhood years learning of Jesus and the love that God has for all of creation. These brothers have heard Bible stories from their parents that have taught them and other chil-dren through the opportunities offered to them in our Chil-dren’s Ministry. Conner (9) and Collin (8) attend South Topsail Elementary School but make the trek to Wilming-ton each week to take part in Sunday School, Wor-ship and CrossTraining with their friends and men-tors in First Baptist Church. They are excited about their baptism. Their parents are Kristi and Chris Meadows.

P.J. Eby has spent a great deal of her eight years in and around the facilities of our church and being discipled by members of our congregation. Be-cause her parents are deeply committed to the ministries of First Baptist and because she is home-schooled, P.J. is at our downtown campus or the Ac-tivities Center most days. She loves Jesus, and she under-stands that God loves her be-cause she has heard it, been taught it, and seen it in her family and church fam-ily. Her upcoming baptism will be a natural pro-gression of her spiritual journey.

Elizabeth and Dru Embrey began worshipping with First Baptist Church when they moved down-town. Walking to church is a part of their Sunday morning and they have found warmth and inspiration within our congrega-tion. Elizabeth grew up in nearby Tabor City. She now practices law in Wilmington with the firm of Fletcher, Wray & Satterfield. Dru is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is a horticul-turalist. The Embrys have committed to following Jesus and look forward to being baptized on Easter Sunday.

Evan Manning is the oldest of the three sons of Robin and Chris Manning and the second to com-mit to making Jesus Lord of his life. He is in the fifth grade at Holly Tree Elementary School. Evan is quite the athlete and en-joys playing baseball especially.

He can be found at our Activities Center often as he takes part in our Children’s Ministry and loves spending time in The Cove with his friends. Evan plans to be baptized on Easter Sunday.

Christopher Beahan is an only child to his par-ents, Amy and Chris, but he is one of the millions of God’s children and has experienced God’s love through his parents and the ministry of First Baptist Church. As a result, Christo-pher has professed his faith in Christ and is excited about being baptized. He takes part in most activities of our Chil-dren’s Ministry. Christopher is in the fifth grade and attends Cape Fear Center for Inquiry.

Love is Something You Do!

Great opportunity to put “Radical Hospitality” in motion! Call Judy Brown (763-2471) in the church office to say “yes” to the call to

We recently completed a sermon series on “Radical Hospi-tality.” Here is an opportunity for you to practice it! First Baptist has approximately 90 people who cannot attend church. They reside in homes and in independent living, assisted living, or skilled care facilities. They range in age from 70 to 100. They are male and female. They are mem-bers of our church or family of members of our church. Their only contact with the outside world is through friends and family. Will you be a friend to one of these people?

“What is going to happen here is bigger than anything I can come up with,” says Vicki Dull about her plans as the new executive director of the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center. Vicki Dull has grasped the reigns of leadership of the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center with passion for touching Wilmington with the love of God. Like those who preceded her in directing this vital ministry of hope and healing to children and adults across the Cape Fear region, Vicki is a member of our congregation.

Vicki has spent her professional career in community service, serving on the boards of a variety of non-profit agencies. She truly feels led by God to take on the leadership of this ministry and is excited about the next chapter for the Harrelson Center. Vicki is quick to credit the leadership of Joe Capell and Kerry Taylor, noting the solid groundwork they have laid for the ministry. She also expresses gratitude for the Harrelson Center board and the role played by Claude Arnold, Berry Trice and Carlton Fisher. Vicki also noted that the Harrelson Center board is ex-panding, adding strength to an already committed group. Jo Ann Carter Harrelson’s daughter, Kimberly Exum, will be joining the board to represent the Harrelson family when Bobby Harrelson rotates off the board this year. Vicki spent time with Mr. Harrelson to find out what he thought would continue to fulfill his late wife’s legacy in the center as it moves forward. Vicki wants to perpetuate the goal of transforming lives that the Harrelson Center was founded upon.

One of Vicki’s first ventures was to meet the leaders of the various non-profit agencies/ministries that have offices in the Center.

She notes that she was so im-pressed with the level of synergy within the group and expresses excitement about what they will do together in the future.

Vicki plans to spend time cultivat-ing the relationships among the current agencies/ministries which call the Harrelson Center home. By fostering collaboration within those groups, she will help them meet needs of their constituencies. Secondly, Vicki also plans to work closely with her board to put foun-dational pieces in place to begin fundraising efforts, such as secur-ing grants available to 501(c)(3) organizations, to ensure the long-term stability of the Center. Lastly, she wants to get the community in to see the good work taking place in the Harrelson Center. It is im-portant to “tell the story” and let folks see what is going on there every day that is transformational in peoples’ lives. She acknowl-edges that “God has big plans” for the Harrelson Center and wants to plant as many seeds as possible to let folks know how it is “making a difference in the lives of their fel-low man.”

The future is bright for the minis-tries that exist currently and our new opportunities for proclaiming God’s love through the ministries of the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center. We welcome Vicki and are grateful that she is willing to use her gifts to embody God’s grace, healing and health for thousands of people that are beneficiaries of the ministries of the Harrelson Cen-ter.

Mission Possible Day is our opportunity to “Work On Wilmington”--in more ways than one. For several years, our single day ministry projects have made a positive impact on our city. A few years ago, the Volunteer Center of Wilmington followed our lead and invited employees from area businesses to invest a day of volunteerism by assisting non-profit agencies with indoor and outdoor projects. The Harrelson Center was the beneficiary of the efforts of 100+ PPD employees when they painted the entire parking garage and a few rooms inside the building. The Chamber of Commerce has taken over leadership of the one-day community effort and named the day “Work On Wilmington.” There are lots of projects and lots of hands needed, so we have been asked to hold ”Mission Possible Day” in conjunction with “Work On Wilming-ton.” In addition to the community partnership, our church will break ground on our newest Habitat for Humanity House on April 16 in partnership with Pine Valley United Methodist Church. Mark April 16 on your calendar as a day to join hundreds of Wilmingtonians in making our city a better place to live. We will meet at the Activities Center at 7:30 am to organize. We will complete our work at noon (unless you are on the Habitat Team in which case you should be finished by 1:30). Lunch will be provided on site for the Habitat Team. It will be a great day. Contact Don Vigus for additional information. See ya there.
