Montanans Receive Recognition for Reducing Hunger, Improving Nutrition The Food Security Council of the Mon-tana Food Bank Network - which works to improve long term food security and reduce hunger in Montana, is pleased to announce its recognition of individuals and organizations from Montana who have worked to reduce hunger and im-prove the nutritional status of Montan-ans. Lt. Governor John Bohlinger pre-sented the awards during a ceremony at Noon on April 13, 2011 in the Capitol Rotunda in Helena. Awards were given to the following individuals: ♦ Sofia Janik from the Office of Public Instruction in Helena for her support for the 21st Century Commu-nity Learning Center Afterschool Program.

♦ Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau from Helena for demonstrating a strong commitment to nutrition and for the many steps she has taken to improve our State’s support for ensuring children have consistent and sustainable access to nutritious food.

♦ Kristie Ledbetter and the founding members of the Yaak Food Cupboard in Troy for forming the food pantry in their remote valley and for volunteering for the past 10 years to provide emergency food for 72-84 households in their community. Clients travel 55 miles one way to receive fresh produce and other food items.

♦ Adam Galvin, Principal of Amsterdam Elementary School, a small rural school with very high student pov-erty rate in Manhattan for his work with the commu-nity to start a School Breakfast Program. Mr. Galvin works daily with the program, which now serves 19% of the student population.

♦ Tom Fetherston and Don and Judy Skidmore with the East Helena United Methodist Church for their bravery and tenacity in starting and manning a small food pantry within their church to support the needs of the local community. ♦ Rep. Diane Sands of Missoula for her contin-ual work in the Legislature to advocate for chil-dren and families’ nutrition, health and overall well-being – specifically her work to prevent childhood overweight and obesity and to promote better health through stronger public health policies in our State. ♦ Michael McCormick, Executive Director of the Livingston Food Pantry, for his dedicated ser-vice to the Livingston community through man-agement of the food pantry and for developing a Summer lunch program, a Backpack Program, the Livingston Community Garden and the “Harvest Dinner” event.

♦ Mike Halligan, Executive Director of The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation in Missoula for his work for over nine years to identify areas where children and families are dealing with multi-ple hardships including poverty, education, health, and social needs that impact the future of children in Montana and for his guidance, direction and funding support for the Food Security Council and the Montana Food Bank Network and many of its Partner Agencies statewide.

♦ Rep. Chuck Hunter, Helena, for his dedication to providing a healthy environment for Montana’s children by sponsoring the Healthy Montana Kids Act of 2009 and House Joint Resolution 8 in this current Session – the Interim Study Resolution to end Childhood Hunger. The Resolution has cre-ated a heightened awareness among legislators about the child hunger in the state.

IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE IN YOUR COM-MUNITY THAT HAS GONE ABOVE AND BE-YOND TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN FIGHT-ING HUNGER AND/OR IMPROVING NUTRI-TION, PLEASE LET US KNOW! Contact Kate Devino, MFBN Public Policy Director at Ext. 231 or [email protected]

Keep Rob Driving: MFBN Public Service Campaign Rolls Out

MFBN’s truck driver, Mr. Rob Shipley, helped move 8.4 million pounds of food across the State of Montana to Partner Agencies in 2010. He has been our unsung hero for many years and is deeply appreciated by every-one. When the Development/Marketing Department folks started thinking about that, it sounded like some-thing we should get the word out about. So when we were thinking of ideas for a new radio and TV cam-paign, it was a natural, just like Rob. We are thankful for his willing participation and his humble attitude in just wanting to help feed the hungry, in whatever ways he is

able to. TV and radio stations have begun airing the PSAs, they are up on YouTube, have been on face book and can now be seen on the home page at www.mfbn.org. Thanks Rob!

Welcome Chuck James, New MFBN Warehouse Worker!

Please welcome Chuck James to the MFBN team! Origi-nally from Seattle, Chuck first moved to Montana in 2004.

After bouncing around a bit in other locales he ended up back in The Treasure State last year to be closer to his mother and two sisters, who live here in Mis-soula. Chuck found his way to MFBN through the Experience Works program in August, 2010 before he was hired on as a full-time employee in April, 2011. He brings over 30 years of ware-house experience to the table that helps ensure that all of your orders are picked quickly and

accurately. Chuck explains that, other than family, not a lot of people ever offered him help but that working at MFBN has shown him that it really feels good to do work that helps others. Even though he had never worked for a non-profit before, he tells everybody how much he enjoys it. When he’s not working hard in the MFBN warehouse, Chuck also vol-unteers at the City Food Bank in Missoula. Welcome, Chuck!

Congratulations to Clark Tower, New Director of Finance!!

Please join MFBN in con-gratulating Clark Tower on his promotion to MFBN Director of Finance. Clark, a Missoula native, was hired on as MFBN’s Accountant in December, 2008 and over the past two-plus years has displayed his fantastic fi-nance skills and attention to detail. With the promotion, he looks forward to participating in MFBN activities to a higher de-gree and being able to affect positive change within the organization. Way to go, Clark!

Changes in the MFBN Development Department—Farewell Mark Brennan, Congratulations to Kathryn McCleerey After nine years with MFBN, Mark Brennan

has resigned as Director of Development. Mark was a large part of MFBN’s growth for those many years and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Kathryn McCleerey has ably stepped into

Mark’s shoes as MFBN’s new Director of De-velopment. Kathryn has served as MFBN’s De-velopment Manager since February, 2010. In ad-dition to her incredible work thus far with MFBN, she brings to the new position her extensive mar-keting & promotions experience with NBC West-ern Montana and development work with the St. Patrick’s Foundation. Congrats, Kathryn! If you have questions about grant writing or

fundraising for your Partner Agency, or would like to extend your congratula-tions, please feel free to drop Kathryn a line at ext. 244 or [email protected].
