To the Good People of St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church and School

April 14, 2020 Easter Tuesday We have celebrated in a most solemn (semantically sad) way the holiest week of the year in an empty Church. It was surreal. Four times on Wednesday of Holy Week, my phone went off with a reminder of a Holy Week rehearsal: Children’s Mass, altar servers for Holy Thursday, apostles and Easter Vigil. Wednesday afternoon/evening is usually a time of anticipation as we put the final details on all aspects of the Triduum. Not this year. The Church was as empty and as quiet as the Empty Tomb. All Triduum liturgies were simulcasted and are available on the smlparish.org homepage if you missed them. Daily Mass is simulcasted as well. Thanks to Christine Brandt for being the camera woman. Thanks to Carolyn Cuperwich for providing beautiful music during the Triduum and Sunday Masses. I have also considered what could be done outside, including offering the Mass, praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, Adoration and Benediction. I contacted Medford Township Police Department, who made calls to the Governor’s Office, and it was decided that outside opportunities to pray, even in cars with the windows rolled up, will violate the 10 person limit imposed by Governor Murphy’s social distancing restrictions. St. Mary of the Lakes will gladly comply with these restrictions. Nonetheless, Jesus is risen, and we as Catholic believers need to take great consolation that Jesus conquers death. And since Jesus conquers death, Jesus is conquering and will conquer this pandemic. As Jesus needed two days before He began his two-day journey to Bethany (for a total of four days) to raise Lazarus from the dead, we must give Him all the time He needs to raise us from this pandemic. Let us assist Him with our prayers. On the homepage at smlparish.org is a virtual prayer intention book where you can list the names of those diagnosed with COVID, those who have died from COVID, those who are assisting in the relief effort, as well as other prayer intentions. These names are read at every Mass, much like we do at the weekend Masses commemorating 9/11. In the meantime, I am very grateful to the Knights of Columbus, as well as those who assisted our brother

Knights, in contacting some senior parishioners to check on their well being and needs. I am grateful to our youth who “home-made” thinking of you cards for these same parishioners. Thanks to the students of SMLS who “home-made” thinking of you cards for the residents of Care One on Route 70 and Medford Care Center on Tuckerton Rd., as their residents were feeling the effects of no visitors. The parents who serve on SMLS School Board have given high marks to Mrs. Rash and the SMLS faculty for a great job transitioning our students to at home learning. SMLS TV Morning Broadcasts are posted on the parish website to spread student sunshine during this time of pandemic. Thank you to Sue Roggio (and Sue O’Connor) for being proactive in making face masks before they were required in stores, and thanks to everyone who donated the elastic they had on hand. After consultation with, and following the advice of the carnival committee, I have made the decision to cancel this year’s carnival. It is much too difficult to predict what social distancing measures will still be in effect in June, as well as the comfort level of being in a crowd. Thanks to Maria King, Carnival Queen, and her co-chairs for their work (to date) planning this year’s carnival. We will look forward to 2021’s carnival all the more! A Message from Bishop O'Connell On Measures to Mitigate the Spread of COVID-19

God has not abandoned us and is present among us. As we learn each day of the growing concern

surrounding the spread of the coronavirus in our communities, we need to have faith and confidence in God, especially in times like these, praying that He will see us through the present adversity safely.

Mindful of the Lord Jesus’ own words in St. Luke’s Gospel, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself,

take up his Cross daily, and follow me (Luke 9: 23),” the coronavirus pandemic has placed such a Cross before us.

In response to the latest guidelines from national and state health authorities aimed at stopping the spread of the disease, I have directed the following:

MASSES, SACRAMENTS AND OTHER CHURCH SERVICES • All public Masses throughout the Diocese of Trenton will be temporarily suspended. • Baptism, funerals and weddings may continue based on the judgement of pastors. • Social distancing practices (3-6 feet of space between participants) should be observed for any event inside church spaces. • Attention should be paid to the cleanliness of our church facilities. • Televised or online celebrations of the Mass and other religious programming are available for use of the faithful during this time. • All scheduled Confirmations in the Diocese will be temporarily postponed. • The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick should also remain available for true emergencies. Hospitals and nursing homes may be on lock-down and priests are advised to check on their status beforehand.

SCHOOLS, RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND OTHER CLOSURES • All Catholic schools in the Diocese will remain closed as mandated by the State of New Jersey. Directions for academic work have been provided by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in coordination with Catholic school administrations. • All religious education programs are suspended with at-home work provided by the local parish leaders where possible. • The Chancery offices will be closed. A limited number of staff will be present in the office on an as-needed basis to provide essential services. • Pastors should make appropriate judgments regarding parish offices. Other regular parish activities and previously scheduled events should be postponed or canceled. • Catholic social and charitable outreach programs and services in the Diocese should be adjusted to meet directions mandated by the State of New Jersey. The Catholic faithful of the Diocese — priests, religious and lay faithful — are advised to keep informed and updated regarding the progress of the coronavirus pandemic during this national and state emergency. You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has

taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Be present to all those suffering from coronavirus and to those who care for them: families, friends, neighbors, doctors,

nurses, staff, government officials, pastors, priests and all who seek to do God’s will. Bring comfort and calm to the elderly, to those at risk and to all who are afraid. Be for us all a beacon of hope, lighting our path once more to the heart

of your beloved Son, the Divine Healer and Health of the Sick. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Salus Populi Romani was processed through Rome by Pope Gregory I in 593 for an end to the plague known as

the Black Death. It is believed to have been

painted by St. Luke the Gospel writer.

The miraculous crucifix in the Church of

San Marcello al Corso which was once carried in procession through the

streets of Rome during the plague of 1522.

Icons The Holy Father prayed before both of these on March 15 for all infected, in danger of infection, and those who have

died from COVID-19. Use them during your own prayer, if you so desire. It seems as if God is calling us into the desert by ourselves to be with Him.

Take this opportunity to just be with our Lord. God has not forsaken us. Put your trust in Him.

A Coronavirus Prayer Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and

villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at

risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. May victims regain their strength and health

through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear. Stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Hear our prayer, O Divine

Shout Out to Ron Murphy In today's new norm, trying to get basic needs - bread, eggs, jelly, cereal, canned vegetables, spaghetti sauce - have become a major problem for families. For the food pantry at St. Vincent de Paul it is no different. At a time of heightened need, our ability to obtain these staple items has been compromised. Ron Murphy of Murphy's Markets reached out to SVdP asking what we needed. In two days, he delivered supplies which we were not able to obtain since the virus crisis began. Thank you Ron for helping us in our mission to feed the needy and food insecure.

Updated Hours St. Vincent de Paul in Medford is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Please go to the pantry door in the back. Your generosity enables St. Vincent to help men, women, and children with financial assistance for housing, auto insurance, utilities, health care, and other expenses.
