8 Welcome To Armenia

The Feast of the Glorious Resurrection ofOur Lord Jesus Christ or the Easter Feast is oneof the five major feasts of the Armenian Church, which is gorgeously and uniquely celebrated inArmenia by the Armenian Apostolic Church.Being the first official Christian nation in theworld, the Easter is celebrated by Armenians in aspecial way.

Following the crucifixion and death of JesusChrist His body was taken off the cross andplaced into the tomb and the entrance to the tombwas closed by a large stone and the soldiers wereordered to control the entrance to the tomb. Afterthree days the three women, who had followedJesus from Galilee, Mary Magdalene, Mary, theMother of James and Joseph, and the wife ofZebedee brought spices and perfumes to anointthe body of Jesus. They found the stone rolledaway from the entrance to the tomb, so they wentin but they didn’t the body of the Lord. Theystood there puzzled about this, when suddenlytwo angels dressed in white appeared and said tothem; “Why are you looking among the dead for

one who is alive? He is not here, ha has beenraised.”

On the day of the Easter feast people dyeeggs red as a symbol of fruitful life, salvation andjoy. Besides, the egg is the symbol of the world, the shell of which is the sky, the membrane is theair, the white is the water and the yolk is theearth. Dyeing eggs red symbolizes the salvationof the world by means of Blood of Christ.

The Armenian Church celebrates the EasterFeast on April 20. The Armenian Church tradi-tionally celebrates evening Divine Liturgy on theevening prior to Jesus Christ’s GloriousResurrection (Easter). On Sunday, the day of thefeast, a morning service is conducted theAndastan Service is performed wherein the fourcorners of the world are blessed, afterwards theDivine Liturgy is celebrated. That day the faith-ful welcome each other on the occasion of theGlorious Resurrection of Christ conveying thegreat tiding: “Christ is Risen from the dead” andreceive the answer: “Blessed is the Resurrectionof Christ.”

Welcome To Armenia10

The Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by theOttoman Empire, cost the lives of about 2 millionArmenians.Throughout their history Armenians have

experienced heroism, struggle and tragedy buthave always managed to survive. The beginningof the 20th century was the most tragic and per-haps cruelest page in the history of the Armenianpeople. In 1915 the great bulk of the Armenianpopulation was forcibly removed from Armeniaor killed. Administrated by the Turkish govern-ment against the defenseless and law-abidingArmenian population of the Ottoman Empire,Armenians were subjected to deportation, expro-priation, abduction, starvation and torture. Over200 Armenian poets, intellectuals, religious andcommunity leaders were imprisoned in the interi-or of Anatolia, where most were summarily exe-cuted. They died as a result of the harsh condi-tions of the desert but it was not from deporta-tion, rather from an attempted escape fromonslaught of the Turkish murderers. In memory

of the victims of the Armenian genocide a memo-rial complex was built in 1965 in Yerevan. Tsitsernakabe rd (memorial) rises on a forested

hill as an eternal witness of the atrocities commit-ted against a whole population. The twelve tow-ering stones bent toward an eternal fire in themiddle harmonize with the adjacent obelisk as astone elegy to the victims of the genocide. Everyyear, on April 24 Armenians from Armenia andfrom all over the world visit the GenocideMemorial Tsitsernakaberd to pay homage to thevictims of the massacre. Every year a lot oftourists visit Armenia, and it is a great respect tous when they express their wish to go toTsitsernakaberd to pay homage to the Armenianvictims of Genocide. For sure, Genocide was a systematic attempt at

ethnic cleansing and mass murder. The Turkish government has brilliantly denied

the occurrence of the Armenian Genocide andinsists that such a mass murder never took place, and refuses to admit the guilt and accept theresponsibility.

Celebrity Talks

This year spring started with an incredibly beauti-ful solo concert, performed by young composer andpianist known especially for his improvisational skills -Tigran Hamasyan. The concert hall was full. People ofdifferent age groups and with different social and cul-tural backgrounds enjoyed one and the same concert. One thing united then people: evaluation of Tigran'smusic.

Tigran is an outstanding representative of the art ofmusical improvisation. The characteristic feature set-ting him apart from other musicians of the sphere is thedeep influence of Armenian folk tradition in his works."I guess it will take me a whole lifetime to fullyunderstand Armenian folk music", he says.

Having performed in different angles of the worldhe mentions that Armenian folk music is accepted asexotics abroad, especially by Europeans. He is a loverof folk music in general and finds a close interconnec-tion between them.

Tigran likes the process of expanding and develop-ing melodies. "Sometimes I hear a set of chords or har-monies in my head, and I feel I can present themin aspecial way, or just create new musical textures", hesays. "The most important thing for me is to explorethe deep entity of the melody and understandinwhich "boxes" they should be served".

From early childhood Tigran grew up listening tohis father's favorite classic rock music: Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath etc. While his uncle "made him" listen tofunk and jazz. So, his childhood passed in a placewhere music was everywhere. There were certainperiods in his life during which he was influenced bydifferent types of music. "There was a time when Iwas "stuck on" bebop jazz. I wouldn't accept anyother music style but bebop jazz style", he laughs.

Lately he has added some rhythmic sounds to hisworks. "I wouldn't call it beat boxing, those sounds arejust a range of rhythms, which I'm still working upon",

he mentions. From his early ages Tigran was keen onsinging while playing. "I'd try to sing without fullyperceiving the rhythms. I even had some perform-ances as a jazz singer", he recalls.

Hamasyan has been interested in Armenian poetrysince he was 13. This was the time when he exploredthe greatness of Hovhannes Tumanyan as a presenter ofArmenian folk culture. Armenian poetry has nowbecome an important part of his music.

His last album "Shadow Theater" was collabora-tion with his quartet. "While choosing the members ofmy group I never pay attention whether they are famousor not. If someone is known worldwide it does notnecessarily mean that we can work together. Ialways choose people with whom I can simply work".

"Working in a group is a real pleasure for me, whenthe "colors" of different musical instruments merge andreach full harmony. In this case the ideas of improvisa-tion pass from one musician to the other, while duringsolo performances all the ideas are mine, and I passthem to nobody else, but myself", he says.

Group performances are especially attractivebecause of experiments. "We had several concerts inParis, based on my album "A Fable", during which wepresented the same melodies in 3 different performanc-es: by rock trio, flute and piano, and by a chambergroup. I like this kind of elaborations", Hamasyanrecalls. Finding both types of performances interesting,he prefers to keep the balance between them whileplanning his concerts.

Tigran mentions that many things may inspire himto create music: be it a book, a work of art, architecture, nature, people or simple relationships. "But in order tocompose I need silence, space and my piano by myside", he says.

Dub step, rock, electro music… which musical ele-ments are going to give new color to Armenian folkmusic?

Let's wait and see!
