C.G.STANGEL NEWS P R I N C I P A L : H E I D I S C H R O D E R U S
Happy Spring Break to all! I hope that the
weather cooperates and that your children can be
outside whooping it up! Stangel staff and
students are looking forward to a chance to relax
and have some fun. It is well deserved to be sure!
The end of the school year will come up
swiftly following break. April brings our state
test, The Badger (formerly known as WKCE).
Each grade level received a specific letter with their
testing dates. Please do all that you can to have
your child/children here for testing so that make-
up tests can be avoided. We appreciate your help
with this!
Another thing that will be coming up
quickly after break is the referendum on April 7.
If you have any questions about this, please feel
free to reach out. I hope that you will each find
time to get out and exercise your right to vote on
this important MPSD referendum!

Guidance Lessons
*1st
, 2nd
, & 3rd
Grade: Students perfected ways to solve
small problems with their peers by using the STEP
method (Say the problem, Think of solutions,
Explore consequences, Pick the best solutions).
Students also practiced using one of Kelso’s choices
when thinking of solutions by role-playing these
problem solving skills. Please continue to encourage
Kelso’s solutions at home.
*4th
, 5th
, & 6th
Grade: We continued our Life Skills
Curriculum. Students spent time discussing smoking
and the negative effects it has on one’s life. They have
become very knowledgeable regarding this topic.
Additionally, students learned about the “tricky
techniques” advertisers use to entice people to
purchase items; including cigarettes. Please continue
to speak with your children about making positive
choices and saying “no” to smoking!
*Newsletters will continue to be sent home to provide
you with more information and ways to practice these
skills.
I am here to support you while Mrs. Hettmann is on leave. Please feel free to contact me if your child needs support or if you have concerns!

Thank You!
Thank you Stangel students and families for making my experience at Stangel Elementary
an amazing one! You are wonderful and I truly enjoyed getting to know you. Have a fabulous spring break! Mrs. Hettmann is
looking forward to returning to Stangel on Monday, April 13.

Responsibility is the Key
to Success!
Our star teams met last week and discussed
what it means to be responsible. Students
had fun discussing the many ways they
illustrate responsibility at home, at school, in
the community, and to themselves. They
also discussed ways they could improve these
skills and earn more responsibility!

April General Music News!
Spring Concert
Grades 1-2-3 Friday, April 24th
10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Stangel Gym
Grades 1-2-3
Students in these grades are busy cooking up some tasty treats for the Spring Concert. All songs will have something to do with food. It should be a great musical menu complete with Pease porridge (both hot and cold), guacamole, alligator pie and an assortment of fruits. We will finish with a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. We can’t wait to share what we have prepared. Hope you are hungry for some great music! Grade 4: Students worked in small groups doing learning stations designed to increase comprehension of melodic notation during the month of March. They continue to sing and play their recorder. Students will begin the final unit for soprano recorder this month. Grade 5: Students are finishing their music unit about music from the Civil War. They sang “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “Rally Round the Flag” and “Goober Peas”. We learned about pick-up notes and drum cadences. Grade 6: Students studied George Gershwin this past month. They learned about techniques composers use when writing a piece of music. Students played both sequences and motives on xylophones and identified them by sight and sound in music.

Art News
What's happening at the art room 123? Literally, the biggest happening in the art room is the addition of me, Mrs. Willis. I'm so glad to be at Stangel and have the opportunity to share with you what we're doing. Our first graders are working on creating robots made only from shapes. We talked about the kinds of shapes robots are made of and the difference between geometric and free form/organic shapes. They also chose between using primary or secondary colors to make their geometric creations. Miro magic is happening for our 2nd graders. They are learning about the artist Miro and the difference between realistic and abstract art. A lot of fun was had by all as they played a dice game to pick which images they drew. Also, our 2nd graders took a field trip to the Rahr West to experience the student art show and museum. We also had a very special "treat" as we went to the Spirit of the River location to see the sculptor Skip Wallen and his work in progress. For those of you who do not know what this is, I encourage you to ask your child and look it up, too. It will truly be a beautiful addition to our community; one your child will remember seeing in the making. So much was learned this day by young and old that I can't even begin to write about it. You would be reading this far too long. The work in progress for our 3rd graders is a warm/cool color weaving. The new vocabulary they learned was warp and weft, weaving terms. They will be learning about the artist Laurel Burch next for another colorful project. Fourth graders are planning out their Georgia O'Keefe-like flowers. We are concentrating on thinking about looking at our world around us in a new way, which is how O'Keefe painted and one of the reasons she is such an important artist not just in the US, but worldwide. Op and Pop is the name of the 5th grade experience in 123. They are making Op art (Optical/ illusion) hands. One of the things I have stressed to them is to not be too hard on themselves if they don't get something the very first time. What's important is that they keep trying and for every effort, they learn and get better. They are doing such a great job. We have also talked a lot about the color wheel and had to choose an actual color scheme, learning what it is called. 6th graders created Mehndi hands, from the Indian culture which they have been studying as a unit in their regular classrooms. Now we are onto a project making Ming Vases which coincides with their study of China in the upcoming weeks. Both of these projects emphasize the use of pattern and specific color. Don't forget to take a trip to the Rahr for The Youth Art Month art show now through the end of March. Take Care everybody! Mrs. Willis :)

C. G. Stangel News
Greetings,
I am excited to share that Stangel Physical Education is “geeking out” with technology. In addition to the IHT Heart
Rate Monitors Stangel recently received a pleasant surprise from Duane Deicher the district’s PE & Health
Department Head. He sent Stangel 15 FITstep Pro Uploadable Pedometers. FITstep stands for Frequency,
Intensity and Time. These pedometers will serve as an important tool for measuring and assessing student activity.
The FITstep pedometers measure steps, activity time and MVPA (Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity). National
guidelines recommend that students get at least 60 minutes of activity time each day. Moreover it is recommended
that a portion of that time is Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity. These specific pedometers will provide students
with insight into their level of activity as well as intensity of their activity. This information is valuable feedback that
can help shape healthy habits. Another feature is the pedometers can be directly loaded to computer software
making it an easy and fast way to collect student data. Currently, I am incorporating the pedometers into 5 th and 6th
grade classes.
Classes are doing well with the Moving through Wisconsin Challenge. All classes have reached the following cities:
Two Rivers, Sheboygan and Green Bay when totaling the laps run each class for warm-up. Future stops will
include Appleton, Milwaukee and Madison. The 4th, 5th and 6th graders are participating in a basketball unit to
coincide with March Madness. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades are in a ball skills unit that emphasizes ball handling,
dribbling and catching skills.
Heart rate monitor update: At this time I have 7 students wearing the IHT monitors in each 5th and 6th grade class.
Students have truly embraced using the monitors. It provides students with instant feedback holding them more
accountable for their own fitness and helping set fitness goals. Furthermore, it has helped me self-assess the way I
teach lessons/activities by helping me determine if I am effectively engaging students raising their heart rates at an
appropriate level throughout class time.
