Distinguished Lecture

Chennai-Bangalore EMC Chapter

The NEW IEEE EMC Bangalore-Chennai Chapter, SAMEER-CEM, and theSociety of EMC Engineers (India) ChennaiChapter, held a joint meeting on the topic“Understanding EMC Design and TestChallenges Posed by Radiation and EmergingAutomotive EMC Test Requirements.”

The meeting was held on 7the March2012 at the SAMEER-CEM auditorium inChennai. A warm welcome was extended to thesome 50 attendees by the IEEE Madras SectionChair, T. S. Rangarajan and Dr. Subbarao ofSAMEER, the IEEE EMC SocietyMembership Coordinator for India.

Omar Ramahi, IEEE Fellow and EMCSociety Distinguished Lecturer, Omar Ramahiof the University of Waterloo, Canada, presented “What Causes Radiation?” Dr.Ramahi explained how the field of EMI/EMCshares its heritage with antenna and propagationengineers, on the one hand, and physicists on

the other. For the former group, much of the20th century was spent on developing ways topredict the radiation due to some source throughcomplex analytical and numerical schemes.Physicists, on the other hand, are interested inmaking the connection between the movementof the elementary charged particle, the electron, and the radiated field. Since the field of EMI/EMC engineering is related to a large degree toradiation, EMI/EMC engineers would naturallybe interested in the work of these two groups. However, EMI/EMC engineers have keeninterest in understanding which sources/currentsare the ones that cause radiation; a questionthat is typically ignored by the two groups ofphysicists and propagation engineers. After all,if the source of radiation is found, containing itbecomes easier than not knowing it in the firstplace. Dr. Ramahi answered in a most lucid waythe fundamental question of “what causesradiation” from a purely practical and engineeringrelevant perspective. He showed that powerfulnumerical schemes, circuit models, andanalytical techniques, while potentiallyproviding elegant and a full solution to theradiating problem, fail to highlight the physicalphenomenon of interest to EMI/EMC engineersin the first place unless careful attention is paidto... the fundamental sources of radiation!

After short refreshment break, Mr.Martin Wiles, RF and Microwave SolutionsConsultant with ETS-Lindgren, United

Kingdom presented “An Overview ofAutomotive EMC Anechoic Chambers.” Thiswas an invited presentation that tied into theAuto Testing Expo held the week of March 5 inChennai. Mr. Wiles explained that therequirements for testing to Automotive EMCstandards in anechoic chambers are varied. Theyalso differ from other EMC standards in thatthey have two categories of test at either thecomponent or vehicle level. The CISPR, SAE,ISO and EC standards are the most commonlyused. Since Automotive EMC vehicle testchambers can be some of the largest EMC testfacilities in existence, it is important to have agood understanding of the requirements of thecurrent standards before embarking on such aproject. Mr. Wiles explained how the emergingrequirements for Electric and Hybrid vehiclesare now adding further dimensions to thistesting.

Following the interesting presentations, attendees enjoyed interacting with the speakersand seminar organizers. An excellent lunchhosted by Agilent Technologies and ETS-Lindgren Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. concludedthe seminar.

The Chapter looks forward to holdingadditional successful events in the future. Formore information on the Chennai-BangaloreChapter, please contact: Mr. Parvez Javeed,IEEE EMC Society Membership Coordinator,India, [email protected]
