Karen legends refer to a 'river of running sand' which ancestors reputedly crossed. Many Karen think this refers to the Gobi Desert, although they have lived in Burma for centuries. The Karen constitute the third biggest ethnic population in Burma, after the Bamars and Shans. There are about 300,000 “Thai-Karen” people living in Thailand. There are probably even more Karen living in Thailand as illegal migrants, but it is impossible to know how many. The majority of Karens are Theravada Buddhists who also practice animism, while approximately 25% are Christian. Lowland Pwo-speaking Karens tend to be more orthodox Buddhists, whereas highland Sgaw-speaking Karens tend to be heterodox Buddhists who profess strong animist beliefs.
The Karen People
The Karen, or Yang people refer to a number of Sino-Tibetan language speaking ethnic groups which reside primarily in Karen State, southern and south-eastern Burma (Myanmar). The Karen make up approximately 7 percent of the total Burmese population with approximate-ly 5 million people.
A large number of Karen have migrated to Thailand, having settled mostly on the Thai–Karen border. One subgroup of the Karenni, the Padaung tribe, are best known for the neck rings worn by the women of this group of people. This tribe resides at the border region of Burma and Thailand.

A common question people ask is why the women wear the rings. There are several reasons. One is that, in Padaung culture, the rings are considered attractive. Another reason was that if a man wanted a divorce he had the right to take the rings off his wife, which

Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos to the east, and the British controlled India and Burma to the west. It was a delicate time, with both superpowers eyeing Lan-Na and each other. It was largely thanks to the statesmanship of King Mongkut and his son Chulalongkorn that Lan-Na preserved its independence.
Territory was ceded to France to the east of the Maekhong River, and logging concessions given to the British. Much was made by the kings of Thailand of the importance of the neutral buffer zone between French and British domin-ions. There was a small skirmish with boats of the French navy over ownership of some tiny islands in the Mekhong River, and a rapid migration of Thais to the disputed area around Mae Hong Son which the British claimed because the population was more Burmese that Thai. King Chulalongkorn, belatedly realizing how ineffectually Lan-Na had been governed, appointed a talented High Commission to administer the north, and encouraged missionaries who imported not only Christianity (which was largely rejected by the Thais) but modern education, health care and administration.
as Governor of Lampang. The railway reached Chiang Mai in 1927, which together with a comprehensive road building programme, drew Lan-Na into the mainstream of Thai life and prosperity.
How To Get There : Both The Karen Territory and Lanna Kingdom can be reached through a flight to Chiang Mai from Bangkok or Hua Hin. In Chiang Mai Day trips are organized through travel agencies to Mae Hong Son where you can admire the Karen People. The Lanna people can be admired by travelling further up North to Chiang Saen where Lannase architecture can be visited.
The Kingdom of Lanna
Anachak Lan Na, was a kingdom centered in present-day northern Thailand from the 13th to 18th centuries. The cultural development of the people of Lanna, the Tai Yuan people, had begun long before as successive Tai Yuan kingdoms preceded Lanna. As a continuation of the Ngoenyang kingdom, Lanna emerged strong enough in the 15th century to rival the Ayutthaya kingdom, with whom wars were fought. However, Lanna was weakened and then became a Burmese tributary state in 1558. Lanna was ruled by successive vassal kings, though some enjoyed autonomy. The Burmese rule gradually withdrew but then resumed as the new Konbaung dynasty expanded Burmese influences. Taksin of Thonburi finally took Lanna in 1775 and broke it down into a number oftributary kingdoms.
In the early 1770s, Burma was at the peak of its military power since Bayinnaung, having defeated Siam (1765–67) and China (1765–69). The Burmese army commanders and governors became "drunk withvictory". This arrogant repressive behavior by the local Burmese government caused a rebellion in Lan Na. The new Burmese governor at Chiang Mai, Thado Mindin, was disrespectful to local chiefs and the people, and became extremely unpopular. One of the local chiefs, Kawila of Lampang revolted with Siamese help, and captured the city on 15 January 1775, ending the 200-year Burmese rule. Kawila was installed as the king of Lampang and Phraya Chaban as the king of Chiangmai, both as vassals of Siam.
Burma tried to regain Lan Na in 1775–76, 1785–86, 1797 but failed each time. In the 1790s, Kawila consolidated his hold of Lan Na, taking over Chiang Saen and Luang Prabang (1792–1794). He then tried to take over Burma's Shan state of Kengtung and Sipsongpanna (1803–1808) but failed. Nonetheless, the Kingdom of Chiangmai, as a vassal state of Siam, had come into existence.
In the 19th century, Lan-Na became an unnoticed back-water of Thailand. It was ruled by a series of ineffectual governors, and the population declined in number and vigour. In the mid 19th century, European powers began to view Lan-Na with interest. The French established an Indo-Chinese empire in

Music For AThousand SmilesVic Hua Hin Once Again Presents The Exiting Unusual
Presenting an unusual ensemble from Singapore “ Resonance” and introducing ages old Chinese instruments, espe-cially one called the Sheng at VIC HUA HIN on December 16th.The sheng is a Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes. It is one of the oldest Chinese instruments, with images depicting its kind dating back to 1100 BCE, and there are actual instruments from the Han era that have been preserved today. Traditionally, the sheng has been used as an accompaniment instrument for solo suona or dizi performances. It is one of the main instruments in kunqu and some other forms of Chinese opera. Traditional small ensembles also make use of the sheng, such as the wind and percussion ensembles in northern China. In the modern large Chinese orchestra, it is used for both melody and accompaniment.
The sheng has been used in the works of a few non-Chinese composers, including Unsuk Chin, Lou Harrison, Tim Risher, Daníel Bjarnason, Guus Janssen, Brad Catler, and Christopher Adler. Some believe that Johann Wilde and Pere Amiot traveled to China and brought the first shengs to Europe in 1740 and 1777 respectively although there is evidence that free reed musical instruments similar to shengs were known in Europe a century earlier.
The sheng's reeds vibrate at a fixed frequency unlike single reeds, double reeds, and pointed free reeds which vibrate at the pitch according to the length of the attached air column. Covering a hole on the sheng's pipe causes the entire length of the pipe to resonate with the reeds' frequency. If the hole is open, the resonance frequency would not match, and hence no sound is produced.
The sheng is played by alternately blowing and inhaling, and a player can produce a continuous sound without pause. The traditional performance style is to sound two or three notes at the same time by adding a fifth and/or octave above the main melody note. When a higher note is not available, a lower note a fourth below the main melody note can be played instead.
Thanks to the hospitality of Vic Hua Hin and Khun Patravadi, such events enrich our cultural development in Hua Hin.

Kids CartoonsWorseThan AdultDrama Moviesby Laura Geggel
Sorry Mufasa, (Simba ´s Father) Cartoon Murders Outnum-ber Deaths in Adults Dramas
Children's cartoons, often seen as innocent films about royalty and furry animals, are "rife with on-screen death and murder," a new study finds.
The significant characters in kids' animated films are 2.5 times more likely to die than those in adult dramas, researchers found. And the victims of those deaths in cartoons are five times more likely to be parents.
"Just because a film has a cute clownfish, a princess or a -
sarily mean that there won't be murder and mayhem," said the study's lead researcher, Ian Colman, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Ottawa, in Canada.
Colman decided to analyze cartoon fatalities after realiz-ing that many of the cartoon movies he watched with his young children had troubling deaths, he said. [Infographic: Deaths in Cartoon Movies Vs. Adult Drama]
For instance, in "The Land Before Time," an animated film about dinosaurs, "the mother of the main character gets savagely attacked and killed by a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the first 5 minutes," Colman told Live Science. "At that point, my daughter was completely hysterical and was begging me to stop the film."
For comparison, the researchers matched each cartoon with the two top-grossing films for adults from the same year, including horror films such as "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "What Lies Beneath," and thrillers, including "Pulp Fiction" and "Black Swan."
Cartoon characters have lousy life expectancies, they found. Two-thirds of the cartoons depicted a death, com-pared with half of the adult dramas. In cartoons, most char-acters die from animal attacks and falls from high places,
A similar scene played out in "Finding Nemo," when a fearsome barracuda devours the mother clownfish.
"I started to wonder, 'Is this just a coincidence? Are deaths more common in children's films?'" Colman said.
Colman and his colleagues identified the 45 children's animated films with the highest box office grosses and recorded how long into the films the key characters died, their roles in the movie and how they died.
The films, from the 1937 production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to the 2013 film "Frozen," were all rated for a general audience (G) or parental guidance suggested (PG). The researchers excluded sequels, as a character might have died in the first movie. They also omitted films without human or animal characters, because children might not view the deaths of characters that are cars, robots or toys in the same way.

whereas common causes of death in other films were gunshots, car accidents and illnesses.
"Oddly, falling out of windows or high places is quite common in children's films," Colman said.
But not all deaths were accidental. Cartoon characters were 2.8 times more likely to be murdered than their counterparts in films for adults, the researchers found. Many of those deaths happen to parents, turning the main characters into orphans, Colman found. But that could be a useful plot point, he added.
"Children's films are often about children," Colman said. "If you want them to go on some adventure to overcome some challenges, it's tricky to have parents in the way."
Maybe there's a better, less deadly way to deal with parents, Colman said. "I really wonder if killing them off is necessary, or whether we can just find some other way to get parents out of the picture," he said.
Other times, the bad guy in the film also dies, but usually not until the end of the film."I guess that's an easy way to resolve the conflict," Colman said.
But young children, and even teenagers, may not under-stand the permanence or the complexity of death, said Dr. Victor Strasburger, a distinguished professor of pediatrics at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study.
"People have no idea of how scary children's movies can be," Strasburger said. Before a child watches a movie, parents can search it online or look it up on Common-
of Pennsylvania, who was not involved in the study.
"Parents should be aware of the fact that cartoons aren't necessarily free of violence," Romer said. "And that's been known for a while."
SenseMedia.org, a nonprofit group that rates movies based on violence, language and sexual innuendos, he said.
Parents can also comfort children by watching movies with them. "That way, if anything really difficult comes up, the kids can ask you about it, or talk with you about it," Cole-man said. "And that might be a really positive experience."
The study provides a clever look at the amount of death in children's cartoon movies, said Dan Romer, the director of the Adolescent Communication Institute at the University

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the back-up singers who harmonised their way through the 20th century with lead singers such as Tom Jones, David Bowie, Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Mick Jagger? Singing, dancing, and dressing to please the lead, these singers are so much than back-up, with voices of their own to be heard and loved. But the question is, can they and did they make that leap from a star’s shadow to stardom? And what happened when they did? 20 Feet From Stardom explores this question on both a material and psychological level, interviewing a number of female, many African-American, back-up singers, many of whom worked all their lives to become solo artists, about their life and work. When dusk had come and Amelia wasn’t at the edge of the valley, I waited.
I waited from dusk to twilight, wondering if she was hurt, limping her way home, or sleeping in Reckwood. I imagined tree climbing incidents and broken bones. And then I told myself that she had probably just gotten caught up with friends…
So I waited from twilight to night, and wondered if maybe Amelia never planned on returning when she set out that morning….
If only I could ask someone what the right thing to do was, I thought. I didn’t realise my parents and brother’s voices were still ready to speak in my mind; that my madness hadn’t left me. If I had, I mightn’t have let myself think what I thought, and wouldn’t have heard mother tell me, If you give up on that child now, before you’re sure she’s given up on you, you’d be making a big mistake.Mother? I thought wearily. If this is about me eating Amelia – Pah! Listen Sal. I may not think socialising with infants is mature behaviour for a giant but she makes you happy. She makes you less lonely. Her words, faded from my mind, and left me speechless, both verbally and mentally. Of all the things mother had ever said to me, that was the first time I felt more than just the runt she usually seemed to treat me as.
In a matter of minutes I was walking into Reckwood. “Amelia?” I called. “Amelia where are you?” “She’s here! Go Amelia!” I heard a girl who wasn’t Amelia yell. I followed the voice to the orphanage and listened as another girl whispered, “Mrs Better is coming!” Inside the building, a door swung open inside. I resisted the urge to lift the roof from above their heads to see what was going on. “Girls, back to bed!” said an older woman. Then the first girl began shrieking “Help me Mrs Better, the giant is playing his whistle, only children can hear it and if I let go of these bars I’ll be dragged away by his song!” Mrs Better trotted over to the girl, and after a moment I heard the adult gasp, “You conniving brats!” A whip cracked, the girl released a muffled ‘ouch’. “Where is she?” Mrs Better demanded. “Sal! Down here!” came Amelia’s voice running out through the gap where the library once stood. I bent down to scoop her up, as another long thin arm reached out and grabbed Amelia’s foot. As I lifted Amelia, a reedy woman with oily flat hair gripped Amelia’s ankle with all she had. I bent to extract the woman with my other hand and then examined her in her nightgown. “You monster, put us down now!” She flailed in my gentle grip.
“Sal, meet Madame Cole, I hate her,” Amelia squared her shoulders and glared at the stout woman. “What other blasphemy have you been corrupting her mind with? Half the villagers have fled because of you, giant! You have no place among the world of man,” It was as if she had looked into my soul and named my darkest fear. I licked my lips. “Put her down Sal,” Amelia commanded. “I wouldn’t eat her if I were you – she’d probably taste horrible,”“You evil witch!” Cole gasped at Amelia. “You will put us both down, it will take me weeks to undo the wrongs you have done to this child,”“You’re the one who whipped me because I didn’t work out that sum fast enough for you!” Amelia snapped. “You’re the one who stole Sal’s coins and told Mrs Better to lock me up! You’re the one who calls us filthy children but neglect to wash your own hair! I was just starting to recover from all the wrongs you’d done by me until today. Sal isn’t a kidnapper. You are.” “You –,” I put my thumb over her lips.“Please stop talking. I’ve heard quite enough.” I placed Cole on the ground and turned around. “So long Coal-Heart!” Amelia called cheerily. Amelia met my eyes, hers showing me a hundred thanks she didn’t know how to put into words. I hoped she could see I felt the same way. I think she did, because suddenly we were both grinning from ear to ear, and continued to grin all the way home.
