Welcome The California Conference

for Equality and Justice 53rd Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner

The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) warmly welcomes you to celebrate our 53rd Humanitarian Awards Celebration and the extraordinary accomplishments of this evening’s Humanitarian Award Winners, Liz & Jim Breslauer, Terry Geiling, Chief Robert Luna and Darick Simpson. Tonight’s honorees are respected and admired leaders and humanitarians who have dedicated their lives and careers to equality and justice through service.

CCEJ also proudly presents the Building Bridges Award tonight to the Assistance League of Long Beach, in appreciation for the organization’s dedication to improving the health and quality of life of all people. Assistance League of Long Beach upholds CCEJ’s humanitarian values and mission by caring for the most vulnerable people in our community. We appreciate the opportunity to acknowledge that service through this award.

We sincerely thank Julie and Walter Larkins for their support and leadership as the Co-Chairs of tonight’s Dinner. Their energy and dedication have helped make this event a great success.

CCEJ believes that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and to live in inclusive, safe communities. For over 50 years, CCEJ has worked to eliminate bias, bigotry and racism through education, conflict resolution and advocacy. Our programs promote understanding and respect among all people and cultures and tonight’s honorees live CCEJ’s mission in their daily lives.

Thank you for attending this evening and for your support of CCEJ. The funds we raise tonight are critical to CCEJ’s continued ability to provide programs that promote peace and justice in our community.

On behalf of CCEJ’s Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and the many people that you help us serve, thank you for joining us tonight!

the City of Long Beach, the second largest city in Los Angeles County, for 29 years. His distinct work history includes a number of operational, investigatory, and administrative assignments, including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), homicide, drug, and gang investigations, canine operations, and communications.

Chief Luna has an advanced education, including Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Executive Institute, FBI National Academy and Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Bachelor of Vocational Education (BVE) degrees from California State University, Long Beach. He is also a graduate of the Harvard University Senior Executives in State and Local Government program and the USC Delinquency Control Institute (DCI). Chief Luna has extensive experience in disaster and emergency preparedness, terrorism considerations, critical incident management, and the development of effective problem solving strategies in accordance with proven Community Oriented Public Safety and Governance philosophies.

Chief Luna has been instrumental in helping to build and maintain productive and trustworthy relationships between the police department and the community it proudly serves. Renowned community groups, such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Community Hispanic Association have formally recognized Chief Luna’s accomplishments.

CCEJ is proud to recognize Chief Luna with the 53rd Annual Humanitarian Award.

Liz and Jim Breslauer made Long Beach their home 24 years ago. Though both Jim

and Liz worked full time, there was always time for family, travel and giving back to the community.

While working, Liz was the president of the Ladies Investment Club at the former Jewish Community Center. After she retired, she became the President of the Long Beach Garden Club and had a community garden for a number of years. Later, she became Chairwoman of the Spinnaker Bay Landscape Committee where she stayed for 10 years. Liz’s real community passion is the Assistance League of Long Beach. Active for over 11 years as a volunteer in their Thrift Shop, she became involved with the advisory team by helping as a daily team leader each week. With her common sense and commercial experience, she was asked to chair the Personnel Committee and chaired a team that rewrote the Employee Handbook and pressed for additional benefits for the employees. She currently chairs the Orthodontic Committee where she oversees patient recruiting, financial screening of potential patients, department management and finding efficiencies that allow them to increase their patient load to provide low-cost braces for over 900 patients a year with only one full time Orthodontist.

When Jim first moved to Long Beach, he served on the Jewish Community Center Board. He retired about 15 years ago and was able to expand his community involvement. While still finding time to play golf, he became part of a number of local, national and international organizations. He served on the Advisory Board of the Orange County Community Housing

Corporation and also found time for ChildNet, The Investigative Project on Terrorism, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, The World Union for Progressive

Judaism, and the Aquarium of the Pacific. That wasn’t enough for this community leader. Jim joined the Board of the Jewish Community Foundation and became President. He also joined the Jewish Federation Board and chaired the CRC and Allocation Committees before becoming President. About six years ago, Jim joined the Capital Campaign Committee and then the Board of the Ronald McDonald House. After working on the development of an Advanced Technology Park in Beer-Sheba, Israel for 18 years, Jim was given an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev where he also serves on the International Board of Governors as well as the Board of the American Associates of Ben-Gurion University.

Through the family Breslauer-Soref Foundation, Jim and Liz have funded a number of national and international endeavors. Most notably, they funded the start of a new Cantorial School in Berlin and have supported a Progressive Synagogue in Prague, Beit Simcha.

Community involvement has always been important for Jim and Liz but comes second to the time they spend with their son Frank, daughter Shawne and her husband Jon, and their three grandsons, Jake, Jason and Brady.

CCEJ is proud to recognize Jim and Liz with the 53rd Annual Humanitarian Award.

Jim & Liz Breslauer

Darick J. Simpson is the Executive Director of Long Beach Community Action Partnership (LBCAP). Under his leadership LBCAP

has grown from 24 staff and a $1.3 million budget to 80 staff and a $9 million budget. One of his biggest accomplishments has been the ability to help individuals and organizations flourish and grow through advocacy and powerful organized actions. Throughout his career, Mr. Simpson has established an excellent reputation as a community leader with diverse experiences that include business development, community development, youth programs and entertainment. Additionally, he is a creative writer with two published books and one CD that can be found on iTunes.

Mr. Simpson was recognized as one of PBS’s first American Graduate Champions in a feature video aired in 2015 on PBS. In 2013, he was appointed as a Public Social Service Commissioner for the County of

Los Angeles and actively serves on Community Action State Boards. In 2012, the Long Beach Post named him one of the Ten Most Powerful People of Long Beach. He is a graduate of Leadership Long Beach and was named the program’s first Alumnus of the year in 1994. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Alabama and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from The University of Phoenix.

Mr. Simpson has received recognition from many prestigious groups, including: the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, The Salvation Army USA Western Territory, the National Council of Negro Women and Centro C.H.A.

The California Conference for Equality and Justice is honored to present him with a 53rd Annual Humanitarian Award. Through his leadership and core values, Mr. Simpson will continue his commitment to help the community build a better tomorrow.

Terry Geiling is currently president and CEO of the American Gold Star Manor in Long Beach. The Manor is a senior retirement facility

for women who lost sons and daughters in the US military, US veterans and other eligible seniors. Terry is currently directing a $58 Million construction effort that will renovate all of the Manor’s 25 acres of facilities and grounds.

Earlier in life, Terry Geiling received a commission in the US Navy after earning a BS degree from the University of Illinois. While serving on the USS Cape, a minesweeper in Long Beach, California, he was selected to attend the Submarine Officer’s School in Groton, CT. Upon graduation Terry was assigned to submarines in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While serving on Pacific Fleet submarines he made several deployments in the Western Pacific to support Naval activities in the South China Sea and Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam era. He participated in multiple submarine special operations in the Pacific that ranged from Australia to the Bering Straits. After leaving active duty, Terry Geiling remained active in the US Naval Reserve and served as commanding officer of Naval Reserve units in Hawaii.

After his service, Terry was hired by IBM to support their military and intelligence operations throughout the Pacific. IBM promoted him to Los Angeles where he became the Western Region Manager for Network Operations. After a career with IBM, Terry

founded Professional Business Services (PBS), an IT services company in Long Beach, CA. PBS has been in operation for 21 years and Terry continues to oversee its national and international operations.

Terry is active in the Long Beach volunteer community. His commitment to fellow veterans is commendable. Terry is a founding Board member of the Jonas Project which helps turn veteran entrepreneurs into high-impact business leaders. Terry is a founding board member of the group that recently helped to bring a Fisher House to the VA Hospital in Long Beach. Also active in Rotary International, Terry was president of the Rotary Club of Long Beach and Chief of Staff for the Rotary District Governor. He has lead and participated in Rotary International trips to administer polio vaccines to the children of migrant workers and to provide books, computers and clean water facilities to schools in rural areas of Mexico. In 2012, Terry was awarded the Rotary District Business Leader of the Year award. He has served as Board Chair for the St. Mary Medical Center Hospital Board and now serves on the St. Mary Foundation Board.

Terry has been married for 52 years to his wife Nancy. They have two children; Chuck Geiling (also a former submariner) and Sara Moore along with three very active grandchildren.

CCEJ is proud to honor Terry with the 53rd Annual Humanitarian Award.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOUR SUPPORT MEANS TO US?

$350 sends one student to Building Bridges

Camp – transforming and enriching their lives forever by teaching them critical skills in

communication, conflict resolution and non-violence.

$500 allows CCEJ to hold a Community Dialogue to address hate crimes, violence or conflict in the community in a peaceful, productive way.

$750 pays for a youth who has committed a crime to be diverted from the juvenile

justice system and provided the opportunity to take accountability for his/her actions,

make things right and get back on the path to school and success through our Restorative

Community Conferencing Program.

$5,000 pays for 30 youth to attend the advanced Building Bridges Leadership Academy to become Youth Leaders and Mentors and pass their learning on to new students!

CCEJ is dedicated to confronting bias, bigotry and racism through conflict resolution, education and advocacy.
