Acheson, May reader in medicine in the Nuffield department of medicine, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, has been appointed dean of medicine and professor of clinical epidemiology. Dr. Acheson, who is 41, was educated at Merchiston Castle School, Oxford University, and the Middlesex Hospital, graduating B.M. in 1951. After graduation he held house-posts and a medical registrar- ship at the Middlesex Hospital, and later served in the Royal Air Force Medical Branch. He took the M.R.C.P. in 1953 and D.M. in 1957. In 1957 he went to America for two years as a Radcliffe travelling fellow of University College, Oxford, and became chief of the division of geographic epidemiology at the Veterans Administration Central Office, Washington. He returned to the post of medical tutor in the Nuffield department of clinical medi- cine, Oxford, and was later appointed to his readership. In 1967 he was elected F.R.C.P. His chief research interests are the epidemiology of chronic disease, the study of the organisation of medical care, and the use of computers in medicine. He is medical director of the Oxford Record Linkage Study, and his book on Medical Record Linkage was published last year. His other published work includes articles on the epidemiology of nasal cancer in woodworkers, and of multiple sclerosis and ulcerative colitis, and work on the use of computers in medicine and the organisation of medical care.
