SOME successful experiments were made at theBrown Institution on the 12th inst., as to the feasibility ofsaving life at sea by inflation of the skin after a methoddescribed in our columns some three years ago by Dr. Silvester.CENTENARIAN.-Mrs. Mary Hodges of Elton, Hunts,
whose death has just been recorded, attained her hundredthbirthday on May 9th. She retained her faculties to the last.Her favourite beverage is reported to have been rum, andshe was a habitual smoker.
THE New York Academy of Anthropology offers aprize of fifty dollars for an original essay on any subjectwithin the domain of Anthropology. The competition islimited to active, honorary, and corresponding members ofthe Society at the time the award is made.
PRESENTATION.—On the 12th inst. Mr. Hedleyllill, a student at the Bristol General Hospital, was pre-sented with the silver medal of the Royal Humane Societyand an address on vellum, in recognition of the bravery ex-hibited by him in a successful attempt to rescue, on theL8th of October last, a woman from drowning in the Avon.FATAL FOOTBALL ACCIDENT.-A young man belong-
ing to Leeds was recently injured while playing in a footballmatch at Roundhay-park, between the Trinity and Round-hay Clubs, and died at the Leeds Infirmary on Thursdaylast. It appears that he was knocked down and his headforced underneath his chest, so as to dislocate the cervicalvertebras.
MEASLES.-An epidemic of measles has made itsappearance in Boston, and several deaths have occurred.The day and Sunday schools have been closed, and themedical officer of health has published a notice warning theparents of infected children not to attend places of worshipor public entertainment. The disease is also very prevalentin the Western islands of Scotland and in Canterbury.THE LADY STRANGFORD HOSPITAL.-It is satis-
factory to learn that this institution at Port Said has nowbeen in good working order for some months, and has beenof service to many sufferers, who have been landed therefrom steamers passing through the Suez Canal. Last month60.8 per cent. of the beds were filled. The committee appealfor .E2200, which is still required for the building fund.NORTH-WESTERN ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL OFFICERS
OF HEALTH.-A meeting of the members of this associationwas held on the 8th inst., Dr. Tatham in the chair, when apaper on 11 infant Mortality in Urban Districts " was read byDr. Welch. The paper, which was illustrated by numerouscharts and tabular statements,;elicited a discussion, in whichMessrs. Niven, Kenyon, Vacher, Rhodes, and others tookpart.BEQUESTS.-The following, amongst other legacies,
have been given by the will of the late Mr. Thomas Jessop :The Jessop Hospital for Women, £4000; the SheffieldGeneral Infirmary and the Sheffield Public Hospital, .6200each; and the Free Hospital for Children, £100.—The lateThomas Cochrane has bequeathed S200 to the Hospital forIncurables, .6200 to the Mater Misericords Hospital, £100to St. Vincent’s Hospital, and .660 to St. Michael’s Hospitalnear Dublin.
THE ULSTER MEDICAL SOCIETY.—The annual dinnerof this Society was held at the Royal Avenue Hotel onthe 23rd ult. The President, Dr. Esler, occupied the chair,and was supported by a large and influential company.After the usual loyal toasts, the following were given:"The Belfast Medical School," "The North of IrelandBranch of the British Medical Association," "The UlsterMedical Society," and " Our Guests." MEDICAL MAGISTRATES.—Upon the recommendationof the Lord-Lieutenant, the Lord Chancellor has insertedthe name of Mr. Vincent Jackson in the Commission of thePeace for the county of Staffordshire. Mr. Jackson wasMayor of Wolverhampton last year, and is also a magistratefor the borough.-Mr. David Lloyd, M.R.C.S., L.S.A., hasbeen made a magistrate for the county of Cardiganshire.-The Lord Chancellor, upon the recommendation of the Lord-Lieutenant, the Earl of Dartmouth, has placed WilliamHarry Cooke, M.D., of the Manor House, Aldridge, in theCommission of the Peace for the county of Stafford.TELEPHONES IN HOSPITALS.—The authorities of the
Hospital for Consumptives at Ventnor have decided toadopt telephonic communication between the differentwards, the resident doctor, the porter’s lodge, &c. The
Equitable Telephone Association, Limited, of Queen Vic-toria-street, London, E.C., who have been entrusted withthe order, will employ eleven of their " Swinton" telephones,and the instruments will be connected on the ordinary.ex-change principle, so that any one of them can be put in com-munication with any ther. It is anticipated that, whencompleted, this installation will save the hospital staff muchtime and trouble.
