Commander SOUTHBY asked the Home Secretary whether he would consider taking steps to make it compulsory for all hackney carriages and other vehicles plying for hire to be fitted with unsplinterable glass.-Mr. SHORT replied : The jurisdiction of my right hon. friend in this matter is limited to London. He has considered it in consultation with the Commissioner of Police and he is afraid that it is not practicable at present to enforce the use of unsplinter- able glass in public service vehicles generally on account of the cost, but the matter will not be lost sight of. PRINCESSES AT HOSPITALS. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, recently opened a new wing of the Plaistow, E., Maternity Hospital and District Nurses’ Home. The hospital now has 56 beds and is the fifth largest of its kind in London. The addition contains two wards of eight beds each, two single-bed wards, a labour ward, and infants’ nursery. There has hitherto been such heavy pressure upon the accommodation that temporary beds have had to be in use continuously. The institution trains 200 midwives annually and 6000 mothers are attended every year. During the last decade the hospital’s maternal mortality has been approximately 1 in 2000. The working expenditure exceeds &pound;22.000.&mdash;Extensive additions to the South-Eastern Hospital for Children at Lower Sydenham were opened last week by Princess Marie Louise. The out-patients’ department and the nurses’ home have been enlarged, rooms have been provided for the medical and surgical staffs, for sunlight and massage treatment, and for children being treated for tonsils and adenoids.
