medical men in Ireland with regard to the service.Colonel Blundell expressed the opinion that the relations between

the medical and the combatant officers would not be satisfactory untilevery medical officer was attached to a particular regiment.Captain Sinclair spoke in the same sense, though he should like very

much to see the scheme now proposed succeed.Mr. Brodrick, Under-Secretary of State for War, said the Department

could not fail to be gratified by the manner of the reception accorded totheir proposals. It was natural when one concession was made thatothers should be asked for, and he was not surprised therefore that anappeal had been made for a return to tne regimental system. Hewould point out, however, that there was great objection to that on theground of expense. In order to carry it out they would have to addsixty officers to the Medical Department, and he was quite sure that ifthe War Office were to set up an addition to the establishment whichwas not needed in order to preserve the army in health they shouldvery soon find a motion mtde in the House of Commons to cut it down.The suggestion that the Director-General should no longer be appointed-for seven but for five years was one which he should be pleased to bringbefore Lord Lansdowne for his consideration.. .The House then proceeded to the consideration of other business.

Mr. Gerald Balfour, in reply to a question by Mr. William"Redmond, said that he had received a memorial from medical super-intendents and medical officers of district lunatic asylums in Irelandas to their position under the Local Government Bill, and he wouldgive it his attention. He must not, however, be understood as givingany pledge that the representations of the memorialists would beacceded to.

Sir William Priestley asked the President of the Local GovernmentBoard whether, in view of the report concerning a fresh outbreak of’typhoid fever from eating oysters, he proposed in the near future tctake steps which would, as far as possible, prevent oysters beingsupplied from polluted sources and. while giving greater security tcthe public, would assist in rehabilitating the oyster industry -MrChaplin replied ’.that the question of legislation on this subject waSreceiving his attention, but he could not at present make any mort,definite.statement in the matter.
