Students this term have benefitted from Mr Rogers presence as he replaces Mr Hannaford who is recuperating from knee surgery. We have also had a Pre-Service Teacher, Miss Emily Daff, who has worked with Year 8 and Year 9 students for the past four weeks. The Year 12 students are approaching their final few weeks of practical work and have an impressive piece of work to show for their efforts.

Our Year 11 students are working on a carcase construction project: some choosing a cabinet and several opting to make a trunk. Students had the choice of a rebate joint or through dovetails to fasten the sides together. The Year 10 students are engaged in either metalwork, constructing a tool box and centre punch, or woodwork where they are constructing a framed table with dovetailed drawer, or electronics where they have been working on a random dice project and PIC chip programming.

Year 9 students have been offered the option of an advanced unit in Technology involving some extended welding of steel figurines, dovetail box construction using Houn Pine, Cad with 3D printing and 3D milling for a night-light, and a flashing LED circuit for the light. Other Year 9 students who chose to do the standard unit are making a set of steps in woodwork, followed by some introductory welding and machining, and then basic electronic circuitry in the form of a simple alarm triggered by a light dependant resistor.

Our Year 8 students are getting an introduction to 3 areas of technology: metalwork (welding and fabricating), woodwork (cutting and shaping a spatula), electronics (constructing a simple LED torch), and an introductory unit of programing involving PIC chips programmed in Basic.

ews TOWN HALL CONCERT

The 40th Anniversary Celebration Town Hall Concert was a true celebration of the Special Interest Music Centre’s commitment to a high level of Music education, students’ and staff commitment to a high calibre of performance, and a most enjoyable event.Prior to commencement, the audience was entertained in the main foyer by the Flute Ensemble, directed by Mr Alan Aungles, who is a flute teacher from Instrumental Music. Once the audience was seated and the lights were lowered, our guest Master of Ceremonies, Mr Keith Hempton began the concert. His authoritative bass voice announced items, as well as described both the ensembles and the music they were about to play.

The Senior Concert Band under the direction of teacher Ms Josie Hawkes performed two works: Danza Final from Estancia by Alberto Ginastera (arr. David John), and Hanerot Halalu & Ba’olam Haba from Shalom! by Philip Sparke.

This was followed by a Percussion Quartet which performed: Spanish Dance – Andaluza by Enrique Granados (arr. Ron Fink). This ensemble was a subset of the school’s percussion ensemble, directed by Instrumental Music teacher Mr Peter Matzik.

The Senior Choir, which consists of students from the Year 10 Special Music and Year 11 and Year 12 Musicianship classes, sang Londonderry Air, a traditional Irish song arranged by Bob Chilcott. It was directed by Head of Music Mr Aldis Sils and accompanied on piano by teacher Ms Leonie Hempton. This was followed by the song He Lives in You from the Lion King Musical by Lebo M/Rifkin/Mancina. It was accompanied by a small string and percussion ensemble including: Mr Jason Hammond – Piano, Jenaya Shelton – Marimba, Alannah Pace – Percussion, Sosuke Mukai and Rishun Sakai – Violin, Jenny Hu – Viola, Jack Overall – Cello.

The Chamber Choir directed by Ms Leonie Hempton then performed three pieces:The Cloud Capp’d Towers and Over Hill, Over Dale by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Double, Double, Toil and Trouble by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. All of these pieces used words from William Shakespeare.

Mr Mark Leahy then gave the Principal’s address after which he was presented by the 40th Anniversary birthday cake. The Concert Choir sang a rousing Happy Birthday to us all.

The Concert Choir, directed by Mr Aldis Sils, and their repetiteur is teacher Mr Jason Hammond, performed two pieces: Street Music, by Marryatville High School SIMC and Elder Conservatorium graduate Rachel Bruerville (words by Australian poet Lesbia Harford), and the rousing Latvian nationalistic song Gaismas Pils (Castle of Light) by Latvian composer Jazeps Vitols.

Music Captains Imogen Tonkin and Isaac Bate then gave a heart-warming and eloquent address.

The Junior Pops Vocal Ensemble Swingtones, directed by Music Co-ordinator Ms Jasmin Feneley then performed: A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, lyrics by Eric Maschwitz Music by Manning Sherwin arranged by Gene Puerling. The soloist was Shayla Platt.

The Senior Vocal Ensemble Pops Vocal, directed by Mr Jason Hammond, sang: Pure Imagination by Bricusse/Newley, arranged by Steve SeGraves, and Somebody to Love by Freddie Mercury arranged by Adam Anders, Tim Davis adapted by Roger Emerson. Somebody to Love was accompanied by a small rock ensemble including: Mr Jason Hammond, Patrick Pike, Arthur Craig, and Caspar Hawksley.

Big Band I, directed by Instrumental Music trumpet teacher Mr Rob Chenoweth, performed: Chet’s Call by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays arr. Bob Curnow. The soloists were: Arthur Craig – drums, Angus Graham – alto saxophone, Jack Edson – trombone, and Patrick Pike

– double bass.

After the interval we heard from the special guest artists from our sister Special Interest Music Centre at Brighton Secondary School. Soloist Tatjana Damjanovic and accompanist Courtney Miller performed the aria Lascia ch’io pianga from the opera Rinaldo by George F Handel.

The Baroque Ensemble, directed by teacher Ms Katrina Brown, performed movements from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Jean-Baptiste Lully: Ouverture, Canarie, Second Air, Chaconne, and Marche pour la Cérémonie des Turcs.

The evening ended with the School Orchestra directed by Mr Aldis Sils performing The Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet Suite by Sergei Prokofiev, and Crown Imperial by William Walton.

ews Performances at the SASPA

(Principals’ Association) ConferenceOn 18 and 19 August 2016 the String Quartet and Wind Quintet performed at the SASPA (Principals’ Association) conference at the Wine Centre. Each ensemble performed approximately half an hour of music each morning, as a welcome to the conference delegates. Positive feedback both at the conference and afterwards highlighted the success of the performances.

Brighton Secondary School Major ConcertOn Saturday 10 September 2016 the String Quartet represented Marryatville High School’s Special Interest Music Centre at Brighton Secondary School’s Major Concert. Held in their new school auditorium, the Jeffrey Kong Concert Hall, the concert consisted of two parts. In the afternoon the program was filled with the school’s junior ensemble, while in the evening the program highlighted the senior ensembles.

The four Special Interest Music Centres have supported each other’s concerts by providing guest artists for three years.

An Evening of Shakespeare at the CathedralOn Sunday 11 September 2016, the Chamber Choir, directed by Ms Leonie Hempton performed at the St Peter’s Cathedral event which highlighted works based on texts by the Bard. The Chamber Choir performed: Double, Double, Toil and Trouble by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, and then The Cloud Capp’d Towers and Over Hill, Over Dale by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The choir performed beautifully, filling the cathedral with a serenity and bliss.

Elder Conservatorium Concert SeriesOn Saturday 17 September 2016, the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Pops Vocal Ensemble were guest artists at the Elder Conservatorium Evening Concert Series: a subscription series of music from the Conservatorium ensemble and special guests. In the concert Music of Many Spheres at Elder Hall, the Marryatville High School Ensembles joined the Elder Conservatorium Chorale with individual brackets of music:Marryatville High School Chamber ChoirConducted by Ms Leonie Hempton OAMDieu! Marryatville High School Concert ChoirConducted by Mr Aldis SilsStreet Music - Rachel Bruerville Mironczarnia - Jakub Neske Gaismas Pils - Jazeps Vitols

The Elder Conservatorium Chorale, directed by Mr Carl Crossin OAM, performed two brackets of music, and included a work The Caged Bird, by former Marryatville High School SIMC student Lily Coates.

The concert ended with two works by the combined choirs. The first was Angel Lovers by Australian composer Paul-Antoni Bonetti, conducted by Mr Aldis Sils, and the final was Rachmaninov’s magnificent Bogorodistye Devo directed by Mr Carl Crossin.

This collaboration with the Elder Conservatorium has been an initiative between director Mr Carl Crossin and Head of Music Mr Aldis Sils. It is the third major collaboration for the school’s Choral Program this year. The first was participation in the ANCA choral master-class with Mr Jerry Blackstone. The Concert Choir was the core of the ‘Big Sing’ event, where members of the public were invited to be coached on various aspects of the choruses from Mozart’s Requiem, by renowned conductor Mr Jerry Blackstone. The second event was the extraordinary thrilling master-class with Mr Stephen Leyton, arguably one of the most acclaimed living choral directors, to which the Concert Choir was invited by Musica Viva.

It is clear that the Music Program which is now fundamental to the Music curriculum at Marryatville High School, has produced outstanding results; that our choirs and vocal ensembles are invited to take part in workshops and concerts is testament to the music ethos, achievements and aspirations of our Music Centre.

Issue 9 September 2016

Marryatville High School recently conducted a Resilient Youth Student Action Day. Since January 2013 Resilient Youth Australia has surveyed over 100,000 students from Year 3 to Year 12, in over 400 government and independent schools across Australia. Our involvement in the survey is motivated by our desire to strengthen our approach to wellbeing and develop a more authentic approach to Student Voice.

Invited participants had the opportunity to take part in a whole day workshop where we worked in year level groups to:• Improve our understanding of the importance of

resilience and wellbeing• Undertake an audit of Student Voice at Marryatville

High School• Analyse our year level data from the

Resilient Youth Survey • Share perspectives on the survey

findings • Identifying areas for improvement • Brainstorm ideas for action• Develop plans for future student

action

Student and staff feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. Some of their comments included:

‘With involvement of everyone, the ideas we came up with can make a difference.’

‘It is important for students’ voice to be heard and the session today will really help that.’

‘As a year level team we went into depth about some of the underlying issues for kids at school and came up with ideas about how to resolve them.

‘Today helped target the exact areas where action is needed. Great that you are engaging the students to realise the bigger picture of student wellbeing at school’

Ms Julie FergusonSenior Leader – Student Wellbeing

Work is well underway preparing the Marryatville High School Yearbook 2016.The time has come to invite families to book pre-paid copies. Blue Order Forms will be found in each student’s Report envelope, which will be distributed on the last day of Term 3 (Week 10).

The price of the Year Book is $30 (GST incl). As there will only be one printing run, all copies must be pre-paid before production.

How to place an order for the Marryatville High School Yearbook 2016Payment can be made:• Over the telephone via the Finance Office - 8304 8461 • Through the Finance Office by cash, cheque or

credit card• By internet payment via our school website (this is a

secure method of credit card payment available for all school accounts. Easy to follow instructions for payment is available on the Marryatville High School website).
