ROLE SUMMARY

The University of Leeds has a strong commitment to finding different ways of opening up the University, its knowledge and learning opportunities, to wider audiences. The Lifelong Learning Centre actively promotes programmes, pathways and support for adult, part time and foundation level students – especially, although not exclusively, those from disadvantaged and under-represented groups.

The Centre operates both as a multi-disciplinary School running undergraduate programmes that support recruitment and progression, and as a Service with a range of functions to meet the needs of its various cohorts, including ‘non-standard’ students based in faculties, with the common aim and commitment of providing a first class student experience. Much of the Centre’s provision is targeted specifically at the local community, supporting both recruitment and public engagement

Following the resignation of Dr Stella Cottrell, who has left to take up a PVC role at the University of East London, we are looking for a dynamic, creative and committed individual to lead the Lifelong Learning Centre, maintain its success and provide a strategic vision which will continue to attract non-standard students in an increasingly competitive HE environment.

THE VISION

A member of the research-intensive Russell Group of Universities in the UK, Leeds believes that it is important to translate this excellence into its city and region and to make itself accessible to all those who can benefit from its provision. In this context, and in partnership with the University’s faculties, the Lifelong Learning Centre has brought together a committed and experienced team who provide the specialist support needed by adults returning to education and part-time learners, and who deliver a range of innovative award-bearing programmes to students from under-represented groups (defined by, for example, age, ethnicity, class and/or income), and to individuals whose personal circumstances make it preferable for them to study part-time.

A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

The Leeds City region has a diverse economy with some 100,000 businesses, generating around £52 billion a year. The city is the UK’s second largest financial and legal centre after London, employing almost 90,000 people within the financial and business services sector.

Leeds is also great value as a place to live, with the average price of a semi-detached house in the city coming in at around £154,000 and a detached £278,000. This compares favourably with the national average of £200,000 and £330,000 respectively. (Land Registry of England and Wales, Crown copyright. Jan-Mar 2013)

Whatever your interests, Leeds and the surrounding area offers something for you. From world-class theatres and fascinating museums to stylish shopping, fine dining and great live music, you can’t fail to find something to match your tastes. The city centre itself is compact, easy to explore and only a ten-minute walk from our campus.

Find out more about what our city has to offer you at http://www.visitleeds.co.uk/

A short drive or train ride out of Leeds will take you into the unparalleled Yorkshire countryside. Famously, the picturesque moors around Ilkley and Haworth were the setting for many of the novels by the Bronte sisters, and the stunning Yorkshire Dales are ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, horse riding, climbing and mountain biking.

Further afield, the sights of London are just over two hours away by train. Manchester can be reached in less than an hour and, should the fancy take you, you can fly to destinations such as New York, Dublin, Barcelona, Amsterdam and even Islamabad from Leeds Bradford International Airport.
