Your options for 2015
• University
• TAFE Diplomas or Degrees
• Independent Tertiary College
• Apprenticeship or traineeship
• Defence force entry
• Full-time Work
• GAP year
Some Common Acronyms
• VCAA – Victorian Curriculum Assessment
Authority
• VTAC – Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre
• ATAR – Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank
• SEAS – Special Entry Access Scheme
• UMAT – University Medical Admission Test
• CY12 - Current year 12 student
What does VTAC do?
• Central administration of tertiary course applications and offers at Victorian:
- Universities
- TAFE Colleges
- Independent Tertiary Colleges
- Some interstate colleges
• Scales your VCE study scores
• Calculates your ATAR
• Notifies you about tertiary offers
• Receives Special Entry (SEAS) applications
• Co-ordinates Scholarship applications
• Publishes the VTAC guide
VTAC also
VTAC does not decide who gets into a course
Selection officers at each institution choose
the students and notify VTAC, using an on-line offer system
ATARs for Selection
• Universities set a minimum ATAR for courses
• Popular courses have a higher ATAR
• ATARs can go up or down each year
• The same degree can have a different ATAR at each University
• eg. Bachelor of Arts:
92.35 at University of Melbourne
52.9 at Deakin Uni, Burwood
83.05 at Monash Uni, Clayton
University ATARs
• University degrees in Metro Melbourne need an ATAR > 50
• Monash Uni and University of Melbourne have many degrees requiring ATAR >90
• Some courses have special requirements as well as the ATAR – selection is ‘RC’
TAFE and ITCs
• Most TAFE programs and Independent Tertiary Colleges (ITCs) don’t publish an ATAR, but still use it for selecting students
• RMIT TAFE does publish an ATAR for its Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas
What is SEAS?
• Special consideration for entry to courses • If you have experienced disadvantage or
difficult circumstances • Includes non-English speaking background
and Refugee status • If you receive Centrelink benefits
The 6 SEAS Categories
1. Personal information and location (includes under-represented schools, refugee status)
2. Non-English speaking background
3. Difficult circumstances
4. Disadvantaged financial background
5. Disability or medical condition
6. SNAP, REEP, PPP (these do not apply to Gleneagles)
All students should apply for SEAS
Gleneagles is considered an under-represented school by:
• Deakin University
• Monash University
• University of Melbourne
If you apply for SEAS Category 1, you can get in to these Unis with a lower ATAR
Why apply for SEAS?
• Universities can give extra consideration to your application eg. lower ATAR
• Extra funding - Access Scholarships
• All eligible students should apply for SEAS
• Speak to Mr Florence, Ms Tippett, Ms Wood or Ms Foster about SEAS
• Apply in August with your VTAC application
What do I have to do for SEAS
• Keep a diary with dates about your difficult circumstances related to you education (eg exams and SACs)
• Find someone to provide a written statement of support: eg. Teacher, doctor (if medical), psychologist, accountant, lawyer etc.
• Centrelink number (if you receive benefits)
• Write a personal statement outlining your circumstances for each category
• The Age VCE Expo in May
• Uni and TAFE Open Days in August
• The Melbourne Career Expo in August
• Compare courses on Uni websites
• Use VTAC Course Search
• www.vtac.edu.au
Research your options
Have a back-up plan
• Many students receive a lower ATAR than they expect (30 students < 50)
• What if you don’t get the right marks for pre-requisites? Eg. English
• Include one or more TAFE Diplomas on your preference list
• Look at Pathways courses eg. Diploma of Tertiary Studies at Monash University, Unilink Diplomas at Swinburne
Choosing a University
• How far away is the campus?
• How will you get there?
• Will you live away from home?
• How much are the fees?
• What Majors are available in the courses?
• Can you defer for a year?
• Campus facilities
• Status (Group of 8) and International ranking
Tertiary Fees
• Australian Citizens can defer paying Uni fees (HECS-HELP) until they earn above $50,000
• Permanent residents (not citizens) have to pay their fees up front each semester
• International students (who are not permanent residents) have to pay much higher fees and cannot defer them
• Courses at Private colleges can cost double the fees at a University (eg $15,000 per year)
Interstate or Overseas?
• Have you thought about applying to study a degree interstate?
• Most states have their own Admission centre, processes and deadlines– eg QTAC, SAC, UAC
• University of Tasmania has direct applications
• Would you like to study in the USA or UK?
• How do you apply?
Course Search
• VTAC’s on-line CourseSearch is easy
• You can look up tertiary courses in a particular discipline, the course details, ATAR and entry requirements
http://www.vtac.edu.au/
How long are the courses?
• Generalist degrees 3 years FT
• Double degrees 4-5 years
• Engineering or Law 4 years
• Psychology 4 years
• Medicine 7 (5 years + 2 yrs prac)
• Architecture 5 (3 yrs + 2 yrs Master)

• There are special requirements to enter these courses
Special requirements include:

• TAFE usually needs an extra application form
