Community Colleges Certificate in Applied Sport

Community College North Canterbury is pleased to offer this exciting and dynamic programme.

The course adds strength to the College’s determination to be a centre for health and well-being, while providing opportunities for students to interact with the region’s schools sports facilities, and community.

The College provides a friendly, supportive, student-centred learning environment, encouraging individual success.

About the College

The ProgrammeWhat makes this sport programme different from others on offer?

1. To begin with it is an applied programme; that means you will be participating in sport and coaching activities, not just learning through theory. This means you will be well prepared to accept any of the many careers opened to you through this qualification.

2. The passion your tutors and support staff have for individual health and well being; nutrition and how it works, understanding your own body and gaining the fitness level that you want for yourself and your sport preference. Individual support will be available for your own sporting activity whether you are participating at an introductory level or an elite level. Individual profiling and fitness testing are part of the programme.

3. A strong emphasis is placed on coaching in the programme – a skill becoming less evident in New Zealand sport. Coaching activities are real. You will work with local school teams and groups to share your knowledge and skills, and practice the important elements of coaching with these teams and individuals.

4. There will be many challenges in this programme. Students will apply their knowledge to plan events, including the risk management procedures, equipment and supplies needed for one and two day outdoor excursions such as camping and tramping, climbing, beach activities and kayaking.

Student Testimonials

6

“I have always wanted to work in a sport related field, and decided to study full time at the College after attending part time during my last year at High School. The course has been an awesome experience. I particularly enjoyed the coaching, personal training and fitness aspects of the course. The tutors are great, and the course is really hands on and practical. As a representative rugby player, I also learned heaps about the skills, training and nutrition that are required to further a career in sport.”Scott Beckingsale

“I have always been interested in a sporting career and decided to do the course at Community College North Canterbury because I already knew and respected the tutor. It has been an awesome experience and the College provides a great environment in which to learn. Because there are small class sizes there is plenty of one on one time with the tutors, and heaps of help if you don’t quite understand something.”Ricki Jacobs

“I really, really enjoyed the course. I found it great that the numbers were smaller because it gave us more time with the tutor. I had heaps of support to ensure I reached my goals. We learned a broad range of skills but could also focus on our areas of interest. There were no worries with parking, or transport because of where the college is situated. I especially liked coaching the students at Sefton School.”Kymm Robinson

“The course was awesome and I wouldn’t be a personal trainer if I hadn’t done it. I hadn’t studied for a long time but enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at the College and the way everyone’s individual learning styles were taken into account. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone keen on a sport related career.”Hayley Cockburn

An exciting programme that leads to genuine career opportunities

Since completing the Certificate in Applied Sport, the above former students have all successfully established careers in the sports industry.

With the support of Community College North Canterbury and other organisations, Scott Beckingsale and Ricki Jacobs founded the Primary Schools Sports Coaching Programme where they delivered coaching in up to 16 sports in 36 primary schools in their region.

Kymm Robinson is now Assistant Manager at the McAlpines Mitre 10 MEGA Sports Centre in Rangiora, while Hayley Cockburn has worked as a personal trainer.

Community Colleges New Zealand (ComCol) comprises five South Island based Colleges, each providing a different range of learning opportunities to meet the needs of their local community.

Community Colleges North Canterbury is one of these five and was the first to establish as Rangiora Enterprise Trust in 1982. Although we have had some name changes since then, the management, passion and commitment of Community Colleges North Canterbury to student success remain the same.

ComCol has a strong commitment to our students to provide quality, student focused learning. This commitment is reflected in the passion shown by staff, the peer support and collegiality, the academic achievements of our students and their respect for our values and environment; and the support of local business in provision of work placements and employment opportunities for the students.

We offer a kinaesthetic (hands-on practical) learning environment based on recognition that the majority of our students prefer to learn kinaesthetically, however, you will have a chance to discover and use your own preferred learning style.

Our mission is to provide our students with a safe, values based and practical learning environment where they can achieve success that provides a foundation for them to enter and progress in the workplace and within their community.

Our students come first. Classes are small (ten to fifteen students) and our staff are friendly, supportive and approachable, focused on individual success.

We support our students by providing internal support and maintaining relationships with external support agencies, eg local agencies and counselling services. This ensures that student welfare needs beyond the expertise of internal support staff may be treated without judgment and with urgency.

We are keen that students are well informed about their training and the College. The College values, rules, regulations, and procedures for complaints, assessment and appeals are published and openly displayed in areas freely available to students and other stakeholders.

We open doors for students to enter the workplace by encouraging and supporting our staff to interact within their industries and their wider communities, to liaise with employers to provide opportunities for student participation in work experiences and employment.

We are proud of these values that underpin our learning environment.

Community Colleges New Zealand Ltd provides a range of advanced learning programmes at levels 3 and 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. All programmes delivered by Community Colleges New Zealand (ComCol NZ) are kinaesthetic – that is they involve hands-on, practical training so you learn by doing. Our programmes are based on NZQA unit standards and will provide you with the skills and knowledge that you require so that you can best pursue your chosen career.

What you will achieveBy successfully completing one of these programmes you will have learned valuable skills that can be put to use in the industry you have chosen. Community College students will be awarded the appropriate NZQA unit standards and national certificates, providing nationally recognised certification of the skills and standards achieved. If you need further information on the programme that you have chosen to study, or if you need assistance in selecting the programme that best suits you, please contact the Student Liaison Officer at your local Community College.

Fee InformationAll ComCol NZ Advanced Learning Programmes are subject to Tuition Fees payable by students. For details on fees payable for particular programmes refer to each programme brochure or contact your local Community College campus.

Tuition FeesThe Tuition Fees detailed in each programme are the total compulsory costs associated with the delivery of that programme. The‘Tuition Fee’ covers all tuition, workbooks, NZQA ‘Hook On’ fee, Industry Training Organisation material and assessment fees.

Course Related CostsThe ‘Course Related Costs’detailed in each programme are additional costs, and are expenses associated with textbooks, NZQA credit registration and certification fees, special clothing and equipment, field trips etc, and are our best estimates, as they incorporate costs outside of our control. Payment of any course costs must be made prior to ComCol NZ committing itself to the particular expense.

DepositAll programmes require a deposit of $300 on acceptance of your application and confirmation of your enrolment. The receipt of your deposit will indicate your commitment to joining the programme.

Balance of Tuition fees Full Tuition Fees, less the deposit paid, are due at either the end of the fourth week of the programme, or on the approval of your Student Loan. Please note carefully your responsibility for the fees. If you have any questions at all relating to fees, please ask your Community College Student Liaison Officer.

Fee ProtectionComCol NZ operates a system of fee protection that meets the statutory requirements under the Education Act 1989 (Section 236A) and NZQA policy. All fees are held in a trust account which is independent of ComCol NZ accounts. Funds are released to the College only as you progress through your programme. This guarantees a pool of money that covers the unused portion of fees paid at all times, should repayments become necessary. You will be required to sign a “Form of Student Acknowledgement” as part of your enrolment process. This provides further details about the Trust account. If you are under 18 years old your parent or guardian will also need to sign this form.

Tuition Subsidy ComCol NZ receives Government funding for Advanced Learning Programmes through the Ministry of Education’s “Full-Time Equivalent Student” (EFTS) based funding. This is a subsidy towards tuition costs of the programmes and is taken into account when setting the tuition fees payable by students. The EFTS funding is received for full time domestic students only.

Refund Policy If the programme you have selected is cancelled, any fees paid will be refunded in full. If you withdraw from the programme within the first eight training days, you will receive a refund subject to a maximum deduction of $500.00 or 10% of the fee, whichever is less. If you withdraw on day nine or later from the commencement of your programme, no refund will be made. In circumstances where a student considers his or her withdrawal from the programme to be the result of extraordinary circumstances, the Directors will consider a written application for a refund.

Recognition of Learning and Credit TransferIf, for any reason, you are unable to complete your programme at ComCol NZ, units and credits already achieved toward National Certificate or Diploma qualifications are automatically recognised by other providers. This allows you to complete your qualification at any other accredited provider offering that qualification.
