Equivalent in size to 1 A level this National Extended Certificate is designed as a two-year programme when studied alongside other Level 3 qualifications and it carries UCAS tariff points. You will study a total of 4 Units (3 are mandatory + 1 optional) and 2 are externally assessed. Taught in state of the art laboratories Course Summary Scientists develop skills that make them fantastically employable all over the world, and this course has been designed to help you develop the skills to enter a wide range of professions. This vocational course includes wide-ranging, investigative and academic study of advanced level Biology, Chemistry and Physics and includes practical laboratory techniques and experience. Applied Science will enable you to study the sciences from the way in which they are actually used. It looks at how scientists work safely in laboratories, helps develop your practical skills as a scientist whilst also giving you a theoretical understanding of some fundamental science ideas. Specific entry requirements To ensure you have the best possible chance of success in the Applied Science BTEC course, you will need grades 5 or above in Science, Mathematics and English. The most important requirement is that you should be enthusiastic about continuing your study of Science. Progression skills and opportunities During your studies you will develop the skills to perform investigations in our state of the art

This course includes wide-ranging, investigative and academic study of Advanced Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It will develop your practical laboratory techniques and encourage you to undertake work experience that will give you the opportunity to put what you learn in the classroom into context.

The content of this Applied Science BTEC qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it prepares you for progression to university. Employers have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate for people planning to enter employment directly in the science sector.

How is the course assessed?The course is assessed by means of a number of Units. Externally assessed units are set and marked by Pearson. Each internally assessed unit may have up to four assignments to complete. For all units, a point score will be awarded depending on the quality of the work in the exams or in the assignments that you submit. All the points will be added together at the end of the course and an overall letter grade awarded. You will achieve either a P (Pass), M (Merit), D (Distinction) or D* (Starred Distinction).

What topics will I be studying?The course is made up of four units, three are mandatory and one optional. You will study 2 Units in the first year and two in the second year.

In the first year you will study: Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science (External: Written examination set and marked by Pearson, 90 marks, 2 hours) & Unit 2 – Practical Scientific procedures and Techniques.

Whilst in the second year you will complete: Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skills (External: Synoptic written examination set and marked by Pearson, 90 marks, 1.5 hours) & one of the following optional units:

• Physiology of Human Body Systems• Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways• Diseases and infections• Applications of Organic Chemistry• Biomedical Science• Microbiology & Microbiological Techniques

Will I need any specialist materials or equipment?QMC’s superb Science Laboratories are extremely well equipped. You will need a number of course booklets and practical equipment but everything you require will be provided.
