As a medical educator, you use what you know to help your students develop into successful professionals. The path is not always smooth and easy. You work in complex systems that are sometimes beyond your control. You try to collaborate with partners and colleaguesas you implement learning environmentsand experiences. You adapt to the unique and changing needs of patients, students, and preceptors. You assess knowledge and skills and provide feedback to improve performance. All of these challenges depend on yourknowledge and skills, but they also depend on your ability to apply those skills to make decisions and take action in constantly changing, complex situations.
In this course, you apply what you learn to turn these and your other challenges into opportunities. You will be guided through Adaptive Action Experiments, where you use your new skills and knowledge to find innovative solutions to the problems you face today and prepare for problems you cannot predict in the future.
• Make decisions in complex, unpredictable environments • Collaborate and coordinate across disciplinary, social, and organizational boundaries • Balance flexibility for individualized teaching and patient care with system-wide consistency • Assess performance for accountability and sustainability
Certificates in AMEE-ESME and Human Systems Dynamics provide evidence of your commitment to overcome the greatest challenges you face as a medical educator.
This highly successful ESME course has been offered since 2012. It has been adapted over time to respond to new challenges as they emerge. The current version is based on decades of experience in medical education. It also integrates the theory and practice ofhuman systems dynamics (HSD) to reflectstate-of-the-art, complexity-informed theory and practice.

SKILLS IN ACTION:
ESME II Course Participants 2017-2018
“Be prepared to ‘try things out’ and experiment, and that if something doesn’t work there is always scope to review the situation and try a different approach.” “Being able to look for the patterns in a complex system and making a realistic ‘touchable’ change.”
“Continuous small applied actions can bring about change. It’s the ability to continually reflect, review, revise and apply that makes a difference.”
“My sticky issue is actually a real case and week by week I was taking action and learned throughout the process. Actually, by week 4 I implemented simple rules which made a significant change.”
“It is the core learning experience in this course. Nothing teaches you like doing it by yourself. You come back with higher level questions.”
