Graduate Program in Economic Development – PPGDE

Advanced Studies on Economic Development The Graduate Program in Economic Development (PPGDE) at the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), Brazil, is promoting a cycle of intensive courses on Advanced Studies on Economic Development during 2016. These courses will be ministered by the PPGDE’s Professors in partnership with foreigners Professors from international universities. On this action, PPGDE brings to the academic and non-academic audience the opportunity to be in contact with the state of art in several thematic related to the field of economic development. These courses encompass theoretical, historical and quantitative approaches and its issues are listed below.

• Complexity and Economics (June, 2016)

• Applied Computable General Equilibrium Modelling (July, 2016)

• Business History (September, 2016)

• Institutions and Economics (2nd Semester, 2016)

Applied Computable General Equilibrium Modelling The computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling integrates mainly microeconomic theory with real economic database (regional or national) and is a powerful tool for evaluating the impact of economic policies. This technique can be applied to analyze the effect of sectoral policies, tax reform, international policies, technological change, among other issues. The course offered by PPGDE-UFPR aims to introduce participants to the ideas and techniques of CGE modelling, developing skills to use a previously calibrated CGE model for the Brazilian economy. This model is named ORANIGBR and was build based on the static version of the ORANI CGE model developed for the Australian economy. By the end of the course, the participants will have been introduced to:

the underlying theory of ORANIGBR

the basic structure and data requirements of the ORANIGBR

the specification of the ORANIGBR model into the software GEMPACK

formulating exogenous scenarios

computing simulations for policy analysis

interpreting and reporting results The course is organized in theoretical modules combined with laboratory activities (hands-on applications). Additionally, two workshops are programmed into the schedule where students or researchers with advanced studies in CGE modelling can interact with Prof. Mark Horridge from the Victoria University, Australia.

Additional Course Information Time duration: 34 hours (2 credit for graduate students) Vacancies: Master and PhD Students (30), Researchers or Professors (10) Language: Portuguese and English
