1. Introduction These Application Notes describe a compliance-tested solution comprised of Avaya Communication Manager 3.1.2, and the Symmetricom SyncServer S200. The Symmetricom SyncServer S200 is an NTP server that can be used as a source for NTP timing. Avaya Communication Manager Media Servers can obtain the time from an external NTP server. Testing was completed with the Avaya S8500C Media Server and the Avaya S8300B Media Server. Avaya Media Gateways obtain time from Avaya Media Servers upon registration. The Avaya G650 Media Gateway and Avaya G350 Media Gateway were included in the testing. The Symmetricom SyncServer S200 GPS Network Time Server synchronizes clocks on servers for IT enterprises and high-bandwidth Next Generation Networks. This Stratum 1 level NTP time server derives its time directly from the atomic clocks aboard the GPS satellite system. If the GPS reference signal is ever lost, the S200 can automatically revert to a Stratum 2 mode and retrieve time from other user designated time servers either locally or via the Internet. The S200 provides reliable and secure network synchronization technology by combining multi-port, high-speed/ high capacity network interfaces with versatile GPS timing receiver technology. It supports a wide range of network protocols including IPv4 and IPv6, for easy management and seamless integration into an existing and future network. The S200’s front panel is designed to quickly bring the time server online with a few front panel keystrokes or DHCP. To fully configure the unit, use the web interface. The web based user interface offers the network administrator ease-of-use and remote access, with full control of the server via a standard browser interface. The high availability and throughput of the three 10/100Base-T ports translates into the support of hundreds of thousands of network clients while maintaining microsecond caliber NTP timestamp accuracy. These three ports also provide the flexibility needed to easily adapt to different and changing network topologies and security requirements. Figure 1 illustrates a sample configuration consisting of Avaya Communication Manager and Symmetricom Servers. The Avaya servers obtained their time from the local Symmetricom NTP server. The local Symmetricom server was synchronized to a remote server over the Internet.

3. Configure Avaya Communication Manager This section describes the steps for configuring Avaya Communication Manager Media Servers to obtain time from an external NTP server. This configuration can be done during the initial installation process using the Avaya Installation Wizard, or afterwards using the Avaya Maintenance Web Interface. The section that applies to the NTP configuration is the same using both methods. The instructions below are for the Avaya Maintenance Web Interface. Start a web browser and enter the IP Address of the Avaya Media Server in the Address field. Follow the instructions and log in. The main screen below will appear.

4. Configure the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 This section describes the basic steps to assign an IP Address to the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 and how to set its sync source to be another NTP Server (called Peering). There is no specific configuration required to support Avaya Communication Manager. The Symmetricom SyncServer S200 will respond to all NTP requests. The initial IP Address can be entered using the keypad on the front of the server. Press the “Menu” button and a short menu will appear. Press the digit “1” to enter the “LAN1 Config”.

Press the digit “1” to enter the “IPv4” configuration. Press the digit “1” to assign a “Static” IP Address. Use the keypad to enter the IP Address for the server and press “Enter”. Use the keypad to enter the Subnet Mask for the server and press “Enter”. Use the keypad to enter the Gateway IP Address and press “Enter”. Use a web browser and enter the IP Address of the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 in the Address field of the browser. Log in with proper credentials and the main screen, shown below, will appear. Click the “NTP” button on the left pane, and select the “Config” tab. Use the pull down menu and select “Server” for the “Role” field. Enter the IP Address of the remote NTP server to be used as the sync source in the “Address” field. Press the Apply button (not shown).

Detailed configuration instructions and options for the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 are available in the SyncServer S200 User Guide [2]. This document can be launched by pressing the symbol in the lower right of the web page that looks like a book with a question mark on it and it is also available online for download.

5. Interoperability Compliance Testing The interoperability compliance testing focused on verifying that Avaya Communication Manager Media Servers are able to derive time from the Symmetricom SyncServer S200.

5.1. General Test Approach The general test approach was to place Avaya Communication Manager Servers in a local area network with the Symmetricom SyncServer S200, and provide Internet connectivity for the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 to synchronize to an external NTP server. The Avaya servers were configured to get NTP time from the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 and network failures were introduced to verify proper recovery.

5.2. Test Results All tests were successful. Avaya Communication Manager Servers were able to derive their time from the Symmetricom SyncServer S200, and pass time information to Avaya IP Telephones.

6. Verification Steps The following steps may be used to verify the configuration.

Use a web browser to access the local Symmetricom SyncServer S200. Click the “Status” button on the left pane, and select the “NTP” tab. The screen below shows that the Symmetricom SyncServer S200 is synchronized to its peer.

Click the “NTP” button on the left pane, and select the “Assoc” tab. This screen shows polling information to the remote peer. The “Reach” field value of “377” is an 8 bit octal number indicating the success of the last 8 polls. “377” shows all 8 bits are on, indicating the last 8 polls were successful. The “Poll” value “128” indicates polling is taking place every 128 seconds.
