Digi One® SP Device Server Setup1. After making sure that the device server came with both the power

supply and the installation CD, start the setup process bysetting/checking the DIP switches on the back of the device server.DIP switch one should be up, and all others should be down, as shownon the picture to the right. This should be the factory default setting.

2. Connect the power supply to the device server. All LEDs will initiallyturn on and then back off as part of the power up sequence. Afterapproximately 12 seconds, the power LED will flash four times andthen turn off. After approximately 23 seconds, the power LED willbegin to continuously flash once a second. The flashing power LEDindicates that the power up sequence is complete and that the deviceserver's IP Address has not been assigned.

3. Connect one end of the first Ethernet patch cable to the RJ-45 connector on the device serverand the other end to the first live Ethernet connection. The Link LED should turn on and remainon and the Activity (Act) LED should flash when link activity is sensed. The flash rate will varybased on the type of LAN and the number of devices connected (anything from once every halfsecond to once every three seconds). Depending on the type of LAN, the power LED may stopblinking once the Ethernet patch cable is connected, indicating that an IP Address has beenautomatically assigned.

4. The last connection to make is the serial cable connecting the RS-232 Link on the RadioRASerial Device to the serial port on the device server. Verify steps 2-4 using the wiring diagrambelow.

5. In order to determine the IP Address of the PC that will be used to configure the device server, the command prompt screen is needed. Connect the NIC to the second live Ethernet connectionwith the second Ethernet patch cable. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of this ApplicationNote for instructions on opening the command prompt screen. In the command prompt screen, type “ipconfig” and press the Enter key. The IP Address of the Ethernet adapter shown below is192.168.2.240. Write down the IP Address of the PC that will be used to configure the deviceserver, for future reference. If the IP Address of the Ethernet adapter is 0.0.0.0 or the SubnetMask does not have 0 as its last digit, this needs to be corrected. Refer to Setting the PC’s IPAddress in the Troubleshooting section of this Application Note for more information.

6. Insert the Digi® Software & Documentation CD into the CD drive of the PC with the NIC. If theCD does not start automatically, double-click My Computer > CD-ROM Drive. Device Server Setup - Continued9. The next step is to assign an IP Address and a Subnet Mask to the device server, as shown

below. The IP Address of the device server needs to be on the same network segment as thePC used to configure the device server. The network segment is the first three groups of num-bers in the IP Address. Therefore, the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address of thedevice server should be exactly the same as the first three groups of numbers in the IP Addressof the PC. In the IP Address field of the Digi® Device Setup Wizard, type the first three groups ofnumbers in the IP Address of the PC obtained in step 5.

10. The fourth group of numbers in the IP Address needs to be unique for all devices on the net-work segment. The fourth group of numbers in the IP Address must be different than the IPAddress of the PC, written down in step 5. Choose a number between 1 and 254 that is notbeing used by any other device and type it into the last portion of the IP Address field. Todetermine if any other network device is currently using an IP Address, execute steps 1-3 ofThe Ping Test detailed in the Troubleshooting section of this Application Note. If The PingTest fails, there is no device on the network segment using that IP Address, and it can be usedfor the device server. Once an IP Address is chosen for the device server, write it down forfuture reference (for testing and diagnostics).

11. After typing in the IP Address, the Subnet Mask should be filled in automatically by the SetupWizard. If it is not filled in, type 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask. Typically, only the IPAddress and Subnet Mask are required for most LANs. Consult a local expert if any other IPsettings are required. After entering an IP Address and Subnet Mask, press the Next button.

TroubleshootingIf a connection cannot be made to the Digi One® SP Device Server from the LAN device, there aretwo tests that can help in determining where the source of the problem lies. Both tests are runusing the command prompt (also called the MS-DOS Prompt).

Open the Command Prompt Screen1. For Windows® 98, press the Start button on the taskbar and select

Programs > MS-DOS Prompt.2. For Windows 2000, press the Start button on the taskbar and select

Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.3. For Windows XP, press the Start button on the taskbar and select

All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

The Ping TestThe ping test can be used to determine the source of connection problems to network devices. The ping test can determine if an IP Address of a device on the LAN is valid. It can also determineif a network device is on the same segment, depending upon the configuration of the LAN router.

1. Open the command prompt screen. Refer to Open the Command Prompt Screen above.

2. In the command prompt screen, type “ping”, a space, the IP Address of a networkdevice, and then press the Enter key. The ping command sends 32 bytes of data, fourseparate times. The picture below shows what happens when the test passes. Note thatall four requests resulted in replies from the network device at IP Address 192.168.2.210.In the statistics section, note the percentage of lost packets is 0%.

3. The picture below shows what happens when the test fails. Note that all four requeststimed out and there was 100% loss in the statistics section.

4. If the test fails, check the Ethernet cable connections at the PC sending the commandand at the network device. Also, check the power supply connection to the networkdevice.

The Telnet TestThe ping test can be used for any network device that has an IP Address. The telnet test can onlybe run on a network device that has a serial port, like the Digi One® SP Device Server. If the pingtest failed, then the telnet test will fail as well. The telnet test is used to verify a network connectionto a device with a serial port. It is also used to verify the connection of the serial port on the deviceto another serial port.

1. Open the command prompt screen. Refer to Open the Command Prompt Screen above.

2. In the command prompt screen, type “telnet”, a space, the IP Address of the device serv-er, another space, the port number of the serial port on the device server and press theEnter key. The IP Address of the device server was assigned in step 9 of the Digi OneSP Device Server Setup of this Application Note. Port 2101 is the default port number forthe serial port of the device server. The picture below shows the first step in attemptingto connect to a device server with IP Address 192.168.2.210, port number 2101.

The Telnet Test - Continued3. After pressing the Enter key, the command prompt opens the telnet client.

4. Press the Enter key a few times, causing the RadioRA Serial Device to reply with the !prompt, which is displayed by the telnet client. The picture below shows what happenswhen the telnet test passes using Windows® XP.

5. The ! prompt indicates that a connection has been made to the RadioRA Serial Devicethrough the device server. To finish the telnet test, click the button with an X (close but-ton) in the upper right of the command prompt to close the telnet client and the com-mand prompt screen.

6. If Windows 2000 or Windows 98 is being used, the ! prompt will only show up on the firstline. When typing in a command, such as "LMPI", the typed in text will not show up onthe screen. Additionally, after pressing Enter, the RadioRA Serial Device to reply with theLMP command followed by fifteen 1's and 0's followed by the ! prompt. Notice that theprompt appears to overlap with the LMP command when in fact two separate lines weresent from the RadioRA Serial Device. This behavior is a limitation of the telnet client andnot a point of concern.

7. If the incorrect IP Address or port number is typed into the command prompt window, thetelnet test will fail. The picture below shows a failed telnet test. To correct the IPAddress, refer to the Digi One SP Device Server Setup section of this Application Note.

The Telnet Test - Continued8. If the serial port settings on the device server are not the same as those on the RadioRA

RS-232 port, non-printable characters will be displayed in the telnet client, as shownbelow. To correct the port settings, refer to the Digi One® SP Device Server Setup sec-tion of this Application Note.

Setting the PC's IP AddressIf the IP Address of the PC running the Digi One SP Setup Software is not set, the Digi One SPcan not be configured properly. In addition, if the Subnet Mask does not have 0 as its last digitgroup (i.e. 255.255.255.255), the Digi One SP can not be configured properly. An incorrect IPAddress or Subnet Mask has a greater chance of occurring when using Windows® 98 thenWindows 2000 or Windows XP, so the focus of this section will be Windows 98. To correct the IPAddress and/or Subnet Mask, the following procedure can be used.

1. Press the Start button on the taskbar and select Settings > Control Panel.

2. On the Control Panel screen, double-click the Network icon.

3. In the list of installed network components on the Network screen, select the item thathas both TCP/IP and EtherLink (or Ethernet) adapter in the name of the component, asshown below. Press the Properties button to modify the IP Address and Subnet Mask.
