1 Preface Before we introduce you to our ideas and concept, we feel the need to inform you that our application is not complete. The idea for this project rose up only on the 19th of March and was worked on around the clock until today, 20th in the afternoon. Embracing that fact that we could not prepare the application perfectly in that amount of time, we still worked very hard to give as much information and specific details as possible. We are very determined to get this project going because we all believe that this idea brings huge value to everyone in the current situation. Furthermore we also think that there is potential to be valuable even after the Corona crisis and thought of other use cases as well, because we want to create something that is sustainable and with future purpose.

Flatten is a mobile app to track corona-virus chains.

The process:

1) Every user can track their social encounters by scanning the encountered person’s qr code (will be displayed in the app). This generates a chain(map).

2) If a user gets tested positive, the information will be updated into the app and everybody linked to the chain will get notified automatically.

Which problems will be solved: a) The app reduces the overall need for tests dramatically. It can display which people really need to be tested or quarantined. b) We digitalize what has been done by pen and paper: on events, certain institutions, airplanes or public transportation there were lists in order to track down everyone who was there.

c) When there was a new corona case, officials had to figure out the infection chains afterwards, which is an arduous task. With the collected social encounter chains, the infection chain is already there.

d) The transition phase between total shutdown/quarantine and “normal” life can be reduced. Everybody is afraid of the virus reoccurring. If everyone uses the app to track every encounter, it will be possible to react accordingly and only quarantine specific people/groups/regions instead of extending a total lockdown. Motto: “Flatten the curve without lockdown”

e) Other epidemics can be fought with the app as well.

3 Problem Facing the crisis caused by the Corona virus, we are challenged on many different levels.

In order to slow down the spread of the virus, we have to act according to the “social distancing” concept which has a huge impact on our lives, society and economy. When it comes to the economical aspects, we are on a timer. A lot of businesses can’t afford a long lockdown time, even some of the biggest companies worldwide can’t. This is why we need to find a compromise between not loosening up lockdown too early but loosening it up early enough to minimize the economical impact. Between this crisis and things getting “normal” there is a transition phase, where everybody has to be cautious and alert in order to maintain the infection numbers at a low-enough level. If there were tools that help us in the transition phase, we could come back from lockdown faster by carefully managing the process and react accordingly to new infections by specifically targeted quarantine instead of going back to full lockdown.

4 Solution If everybody who starts working again, carefully documents all encounters they had, we will have an advantage facing new infections. This documenting process has been done before for example on airplanes, public transportation or big events. But it has been done with analog tools such as pen and paper, which is dangerous as well, because a new infection might be caused by touching a pen which was used by everyone. So the documentation has to be done digitally, fast and not complicated at all. Additionally, if a person gets tested positive, information about it has to get to all people they encountered as fast as possible.

So in general the idea is to document all encounters with other people and by that creating encounter chains. In this scenario we are one step ahead, because those chains could become or already are an infection chain which otherwise would have to be carefully reconstructed which costs time to react. Encounter chains that will be proven to have infections can be managed directly by official institutions with distributed testing going down the chains bit by bit.

The following texts explain the most relevant screens.

After signing up the user directly sees his personal “encounter code”. Other users scan this code to register an encounter.

To scan the encounter-codes from others, or to scan public codes (will be added to doors from supermarkets), the user uses this scan-view.

All encounters (“digital handshakes”) will be collected in the encounterlist. Here the user sees all encounters he had.

Color-Explanation:

If a user didn’t have any direct contact to infected people, his status will be green.

If a user had contact to an infected person his status will be switched to yellow and he might have to get tested.

From this user perspective the situation is:

Anna had direct contact to an infected person so she might have to be tested. The user himself didn’t have any direct contact to an infected person, only to Anna. If Anna gets positive test results her status will turn red and the user himself will get a notification to go to a testing point (see later in this document).

In the screenshot you also see “Supermarket” and “Workplace”:

At places with a lot of people, like supermarkets, there is the possibility to hang out QR codes e.g. at the entrance of a supermarket. If the user enters (and leaves) the store he scans the code. In this way the system saves all contacts who have been there during the same time period.

The user uses this screen to create such QR codes (as described before), which can be e.g. clipped on supermarket entrances.

The (governmental) health services can send push warnings to people that had contact with the infected person and select test points for them. This can also be automated in the system.

6 Provided Benefits 1) Digital documentation is a superior and more safe way of documenting. 2) Easier, faster and more appropriate responses by users and officials as well because

of already existing encounter chains 3) Better use of testing capacities by specifically targeting individuals or certain groups for

testing or quarantine. 4) Fast and automatic information for every user in case of new infections in “their” chains. 5) A shorter transition phase enabling a quicker “back to normal” and thus a huge potential

to save a lot of financial resources. 6) If there is a big company having just one Corona case, they will have to shut down

completely. With Flatten app they can prevent this by hanging out QR codes in every room or part of the company, so only people having been to a specific room where an infected person was, have to be quarantined.

7) As soon as an epidemic becomes as big as now, official institutions can’t save us without the help of every single individual. Flatten app is a way to outsource and democratize the responsibility and workload, because of every user’s contribution.

7 Further Use Cases Every upcoming epidemic can be fought with Flatten app as well. Already having learnt from the current situation we will be prepared better by also having the right digital tools. In addition to including all new corona cases into encounter chains, there is also the possibility of including all the symptoms (without a positive test) a user might have as well. This could be realised in a second and updated version.

8 Finances As the current situation is hitting our main customer Daimler hard, some employees from the projects have already been dismissed. We are therefore dependent on project aid.

We are very flexible to all possible financial models. Our team consists of 11 people and the average wage per hour is € 82. We have the experience to program the beta version within two weeks.
