1. Introduction We are pleased that you have chosen to apply for a course with us. Your interview will help us consider your individual circumstances, as well as your predicted or achieved grades, when we make you an offer. Use this day to gather information on all courses related to your subject, get careers advice from our subject specialists, and learn more about the progression routes available to enter your chosen career. When the time comes for you to select your firm and insurance choices, it is important that you are in a position to make an informed decision; one that will help you gain a place on the course that is right for you and at a university where you will feel happy and content. We’ll do everything we can to help you arrive at the right decision. The volume of information provided can be quite daunting, so you may find it helpful to bring someone with you, like a relative or friend, to discuss your options. Your guests can participate in talks and tours, but not the interview session. At the end of the day you and your guests will be able to share their thoughts and opinions with you, hopefully helping you make the best choice.

3. Interview

Introduction

We use interviews to help us find out more about you and to understand any challenges you may have had to overcome in your journey to applying to university. Your interview helps our admissions staff tailor your offer to your own particular background and circumstances, taking into consideration your individual strengths and potential to succeed.

Selection process

We have already made a provisional decision based on the information provided in your application form and will send a formal offer of a place, and any conditions attached, through UCAS shortly after your interview. By performing well at interview you can improve your chance of receiving an offer tailored to your individual background and potential. A good interview performance is taken into consideration if your achieved grades don’t quite match the conditions specified in the formal offer. If you have used more than one of your five UCAS choices for a course at Teesside University then normally a single interview covers all your selected courses, as long as these are in the School of Science, Engineering & Design. If you have applied for more than one course and you receive more than one invitation from Teesside University, please contact us to confirm which interview you are attending and we will try to arrange for you to be met with the admissions tutor of all the courses you have applied for on the same date.

Your interview

The interview is to enable us to learn more about you and for you to ask us any questions about studying at university, your course and career prospects. The interview is intended to be a friendly and pleasant interaction between you and your interviewer. It is semi-structured and partly prescribed, with a significant part of the interview directed by your interviewer based on your own background, interests and qualifications. You have the opportunity to ask questions during the interview. During your interview you should aim to:

• give a fuller account of yourself, including hobbies and skills relevant to the course which you wish to study

• demonstrate your communication skills • inform the admissions staff of any information which might have been omitted from your application

form • seek answers to the questions you might have on the application process, funding, courses available

and career prospects. During your interview your interviewer will focus on evaluating:

• your communication skills • your enthusiasm and commitment to your chosen field of study • your determination and potential to succeed • your potential to benefit from our employability-enhancing curriculum.

The outcome of your interview is important and will help our admissions team to:

• confirm that your selected course matches your background and interests • decide the details of the formal offer to be made • decide how flexible we can be if your grades do not quite match the conditions specified in your

formal offer.

Portfolio of work

The following courses require a portfolio of work to be presented. • fashion • graphic design and illustration • interior design • product design and creative innovation • textile design

If you are attending an interview for a course listed above, please bring along to your interview your portfolio of creative work. Your portfolio should show evidence of:

• your ability to present ideas through visual communication • a level of research, experimentation and development • your technical and practical abilities • effective presentation techniques relevant to the creative design course you are applying for.

This forms the basis for discussion at the interview and helps in assessing your skills and commitment to a career in the creative and design industries.

Dress code

Your interview is formal and professional, however, we do not prescribe a dress code. Some applicants arrive smartly dressed in suit and tie while others arrive in smart casual wear. We ask that you use your own judgement as to what clothes to wear.

8. Qualifications and tariff points Most UK applicants applying for a place on a degree course will most likely be studying one of the UK qualifications in tariff tables, but we also consider applicants offering equivalent UK, EU and international qualifications. UCAS provides many tables of tariffs for a very wide range of qualifications – the web address for these is www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/getting-started/entry-requirements/ucas-undergraduate-tariff-points Contact us if you have any queries relating to your qualifications and your offer. In many cases we may be able to help you find solutions if your qualifications and attained grades do not match exactly the entry requirements for your course.
