Apple Smartphone Sales Accelerate In Q4; Samsung Experiences Slight Decline
IDC, a renowned research firm, has released its newest report that is essentially on the smart device
market including global shipments of notebook PCs, desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.
According to the report, IDC made an estimate regarding growth in the market, suggesting that total
growth was 29.1 percent on yearly basis, in 2012, surpassing 1 billion units. Moreover, the amount
of money generated due to these sales was $576.9 billion.
The report further reveals that sales of tech giant Apple accelerated in the 4th quarter of the year,
going from 15.1% in the 3rd quarter of the year to 20.3% in the 4th quarter. As a result of this
acceleration, Apple now stands right behind rival company Samsung. Surprisingly, IDCs report
revealed that Samsungs sales dropped in the 4th
quarter of the year, going from 21.8 percent in the
3rd quarter of the year to 21.2 percent in Q4.
The total shipments of notebook PCs, desktop PCs, smartphones and tablets totalled to 378 million
in the 4th
quarter of 2012, revealed the report, which managed to generate total revenue of $168billion. The increase in Apples sales on quarterly basis was due to iPad Mini and iPhone 5, which
helped push Apples share in the market. Additionally, in terms of revenue, Apple performed much
better than Korea based Samsung, as while Apples total market share based on revenue was 30.7
percent, Samsungs was only 20.4 percent.
According to IDCs report, the increase in Apples market share in terms of sales and revenue was
due to very strong sales of both its tablets, iPad and iPad Mini, as the growth in its tablet sales was
78.4 percent on year to year basis. IDC has also made a prediction regarding tablet shipments to
exceed desktop PC shipment by the end of 2013. Furthermore, according to IDC, the tablet market
may outperform the portable PC market as well by the end of next year, allowing Cupertino techgiant to further close the gap with Samsung in 2013 and 2014.
Global desktop PC shipments are likely to drop by a rough estimate of 4.3 percent while growth of
portable PCs will most likely remain flat (staying at 0.9 percent). On the contrary, the tablet market
is going to flourish, with an expected growth of 48.7 percent (on yearly basis). Additionally,
smartphone sales are also expected to show momentum this year, with sales increasing by 27.2
percent, settling at 918.5 million devices, predicts IDC.
Additionally, the research firm has also predicted that by the close of 2017, the smartphone and
tablet market will have a big opportunity to grow in developing and emerging economies. When this
happens, tablet shipments will grow by 3 folds, with shipments reaching $125 billion, whereas
smartphone shipments are predicted to increase by 2 folds, with its total shipments reaching $462
billion. IDCs prediction is also suggestive of the fact that in the same year, desktop computers will
exhibit continuous decline on yearly basis till 2017 and will not show any growth in 2017, while
portable PCs will experience modest growth.
