future” – United Nations
The Apple International School, Dubai celebrated International
literacy day on the 8th of September 2019. The aim was to educate
the students on the meaning of ‘literacy’ because literacy is a basic
human right. UNESCO declared September 8 as 'International
Literacy Day' in 1965. The aim of the day is to highlight the
importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
Students watched a video on Literacy Facts and created story
books for communities with high rates of illiterate persons. They
also made a poster on Scientific Literacy to appreciate the world
and the environment around us.
They were able to understand literacy is important because it is the
foundation upon which people are able to interact with the world,
educate themselves, and contribute to society as well as their own
well being. Literacy programs provide parents the means required
to help their children develop early language capabilities and
literacy.
Enhanced literacy is an added advantage to countries economic
growth; poverty reduction and eradication; reduce crime; promote
democracy; increase civic engagement and promote cultural
diversity through literacy programs in minority languages.
“Pupils feel safe and school leaders go above and beyond what is expected of them to ensure each child’s safety. Safeguarding is at the heart of what the school stands for.” – OFSTED 2017
The students of Grade 3 commemorated the World Day of Preservation of
the Ozone Layer on the 16th of September 2019 through classroom
activities. Firstly, students spoke on the things they already knew about
the ozone layer, then they watched a video ‘What is Ozone Layer? -
Environmental Science for Kids’.
Next, students read an article on ‘The Environment Ozone Layer
Depletion’ from ducsters.com and identified more ways the ozone layer is
depleted and ways to save it. Few students interpreted data on ozone layer
depletion through graphical representation, while most of the students
illustrated the earth and the ozone layer.
The aim of the activity was to educate students to reach out to the
community on withdrawal from the purchase of CFC refrigerators and air
conditioners as well use alternative means of transport to avoid exhaust in
the air.
Outcome:
• Students were able to speak confidently about the importance of
the ozone layer
• Students were able to identify CFC is a major cause of ozone
layer depletion.
• Students were able to suggest ways to reduce the loss of the
ozone layer by educating family and friends.
