Why Apple.A foundation for education. Why should you choose Apple? Simple question. Simple answer. You invest in technology to help accelerate learning and raise achievement. Apple technology does that better than any other. Why? Because Apple has been involved in education longer than any other computer company. We support and collaborate with educators in ways that others don’t. We understand how teachers teach and students learn, and we build innovative technology to enhance both teaching and learning. In all, it’s a committed and comprehensive approach that provides a far stronger foundation for success in education.

Over 25 years of innovation. Apple entered the education arena in 1978. Soon after, we donated 10,000 computers to California schools through a programme called “Kids Can’t Wait”. In 1986, we initiated the Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT) study, a pioneering longitudinal research project to examine the relationship between education outcomes and technology. For nearly a decade, the Apple Distinguished Educator programme has brought together leading educators to share innovative ways to use technology in education. And the Apple Teacher Institutes are designed to meet a wide variety of technology profes-sional development needs, from basic technical knowledge to advanced leadership skills. For over 25 years, Apple has been bringing innovation to education. And we will continue to do so well into the future.

Teaching and learning transformed. Today we are setting the technology standards that will transform teaching and learning in the 21st century. Our pioneering 1-to-1 learning environments provide wireless laptops for every teacher and every student. Our Wireless Mobile Labs bring a∂ordable technology to any classroom. Our easy-to-use authoring software enhances learning and understanding by enabling students to express themselves through movies, web pages and presentations. And our enterprise solutions are extremely reliable, work well with existing systems and expand easily to meet changing needs. All of these technologies make a profound di∂erence in the way teachers teach and students learn.

Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow

Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), a pioneering 12-year research project, examines the relationship between education outcomes and technology. One key finding: the greater the access to technology, the higher the student engagement and achievement.

Apple Distinguished Educator

Since 1996, the worldwide Apple Distinguished Educator programme has brought together a select group of expert educators who contribute innovative ways to use technology in the classroom – from curriculum content and lesson plans to teaching ideas and other resources.

Apple Training Institutes

Apple Teacher Institutes and Seminars provide residential courses that are designed to meet a wide variety of technology professional development needs, from basic technical knowledge to advanced leadership skills. Through participation in hands-on workshops, teachers learn how to bring technology into the classroom.

Learning tools for our time.Reaching out to digital natives. Recent research has shown that today’s pupils learn di∂erently to their predecessors. They are “digital natives”. What we think of as tools or technology, they think of as the stu∂ of their daily lives. They watch, listen, learn, communicate and collaborate digitally in multiple media all the time, and often all at the same time. To best reach and teach these pupils requires an approach that mirrors their life experience. That is exactly what Apple provides. Apple technology is so intuitive that pupils don’t have to learn it, they just “get it”. And it creates the environment they need to learn, communicate, collaborate, create and express their knowledge.

A path for digital immigrants. If pupils are digital natives, most teachers are “digital immigrants”. Even for those who understand and embrace technology, it does not come as naturally to them as it does to their pupils. Apple is uniquely able to bring teachers up to speed. Our technology is easier to use than any other. And professional development with Apple prepares them to create a digital curriculum that engages pupils and increases achievement.

The right solutions at the right time. Today the pressure to improve achievement levels is greater than ever before. And achievement improves faster when digital natives and digital immigrants – pupils and teachers – are mutually comfortable with technology and mutually engaged. Apple’s innovative educational solutions can make that happen quickly and easily.

Digital Authoring

Think of it as learning by expressing. If pupils can write it, score it, make a slideshow, movie or DVD about it, and present it, they’ve learned it. Apple’s iLife and iWork software provides a full array of integrated, easy-to-use tools that enable pupils to create and present projects combining photos, text, video and even music.

Collaboration and Communication

Apple opens all lines of communi-cation. Mac OS X is the most open, accessible and interoperable learning platform. Wireless iBook laptops and AirPort wireless networks enable students, teachers, parents and administrators to communicate online anywhere, anytime. With iChat AV software and iSight cameras, students can collaborate on group projects and participate in video conferences with outside experts.

Flexible Learning

Whether you’re ready to implement 1-to-1 learning, revamp an aging computer lab or simply bring more computers into the classroom, Apple o∂ers the computing solutions to match your needs. iBook laptops are the computer of choice for most 1-to-1 implementations. The a∂ordable Mac mini works with your existing monitors and keyboards.* And Apple Wireless Mobile Labs let you roll a cart full of wireless iBook computers from classroom to classroom.

Welcome to the digital school.A vision for learning. Today’s learners look at technology not as a tool but as part of their environment. To fully meet their needs, technology should always be available. In a 1-to-1 learning environment, each student has access to a wireless laptop to use at school and at home, connecting students to school and peers, and connecting parents to their children’s learning. Educators are provided with tools to create learning plans, manage educational content, track student progress and more.

From the back room to the classroom. And beyond. Apple has created a comprehensive technology infrastructure for learning. It starts in the back room with high-performance, high-reliability servers and software, storage, and networking systems. In the classroom, we provide a range of wireless laptop and desktop computers, as well as a full complement of software for digital content creation, communication and collaboration. And Mac OS X, the best computing platform for learning, provides unprecedented accessibility options for those with disabilities.

We know that our vision for the digital school is an ambitious one. Therefore, we o∂er a number of incremental solutions that will start your school on the road to 1-to-1 learning. Your first step might be Apple’s Wireless Mobile Lab, which brings the computer lab to the students instead of the other way around. To get a better picture of Apple’s vision for the digital school, just look at the pictures.

Express learning. Access to learning. Apple solutions for education are designed to provide maximum access to learning. They are inherently easy to use, which means students and teachers can concentrate on teaching and learning, instead of learning to use the computer. Everything about Apple technology is simple and intuitive. Connecting devices like digital cameras, for instance, is plug and play – plug them in and they just work, automatically. Connecting to an AirPort wireless network is just as easy – turn on the computer and you’re on the network; no searching, fiddling or configuring. Communication and collaboration is natural and easy. Moreover, Mac OS X is loaded with Universal Access features that accommodate students with learning di∂erences and disabilities. It’s the way computing should be.

Digital expression. Deeper understanding. Apple solutions turn students into creators of content, not just consumers. They become authors, creating movies, presentations, web pages and other digital projects that they can publish and share in the classroom and beyond. The act of authoring requires students to research, analyse, make decisions and solve problems. It enables them to experience knowledge and develop understanding in ways that go beyond just doing assignments.

Higher achievement, lower cost. Many recent studies have demonstrated that the greater access students have to technology, the more they achieve. Apple education solutions – through innovation, ease of use, reliable infrastructure and professional development – provide that access. And they do so at a lower overall cost.

iMovie HD

iMovie HD gives students the power to express their knowledge through movie projects that include digital video, photos and music, as well as narration and text. For instance, they can easily create video science reports, their own short films or historical documentaries. And iMovie HD enables teachers to share best practices with their peers.

iPhoto

iPhoto makes it easy to download, organise, edit and share digital photos. Students can create field trip slideshows, web pages with photos of their artwork and printed photo books to display their projects. They can also store and organise photos for use in their digital movies.

GarageBand

With GarageBand, students can perform and record their own music. They can easily create original music by combining a series of pre-recorded musical performances. Or they can plug in a guitar, keyboard or microphone and record their own music, viewing full music notation as they record.

Pages

Students and teachers will be amazed at how easy it is to produce great-look-ing documents with Pages – from a one-page lab report to a two-column newsletter to a term paper, complete with charts, tables, bibliography and footnotes. With Pages, they can create beautifully designed documents in minutes, making it a great addition to any classroom.

Keynote

Keynote provides everything students or teachers need to produce and deliver e∂ective and well-designed presentations – from creating slides to adding animated titles to sharing their knowledge with the class.

Words of wisdom. We’ve talked a lot about Apple innovations in educational technology. Now take a moment to listen to our partners in innovation – namely, our customers. We make the technology, but they make it work, day in and day out, in schools all over the world. Daring to do things di∂erently to meet the needs of their learners requires leaders. Some of them have implemented 1-to-1 learning environments with Apple infrastructure throughout their schools. Others have begun by adopting Apple solutions one classroom at a time. Either way, Apple solutions have helped them build enthusiasm and raise achievement. And they’re proud to say so.

Eric Le Jan Lycée Camille Saint Saens, Rouen, France “ As for the price, many industry standards are very a∂ordable. Turn them on, and there is nothing else but the system. Everything has to be purchased separately. Macs come fully equiped.”

Cinzia Grazioli Liceo Scientifico Vittorio Veneto, Milano, Italy “ Teachers need a technology that can fully support learning and grab and hold kids’ attention. Mac OS is so easy to use that teachers can immediately concentrate on learning activities and profitably collaborate with their colleagues.”

App. A. Rh. Kantonsschule Trogen, CH, Switzerland “ Because of the large number of available programs even in specialist areas (including natural sciences), the computers are used throughout the department.”

Prof. Dr Wolfgang Sander Justus Liebig Universität Giessen, Institut didaktik der Sozialwissenschaften, Germany “ Even Year 1 pupils can learn successfully with digital media. Our research showed that kids get along with iMacs easily and can produce interesting projects.”

Henri Reijgersberg de la Rey school, Holland “The easy-to-operate software stimulates teamwork during themed educational activities. In this way, New Learning acquires a practical value for children.”

Urbain De Langhe G.V.B.S. Sint-Martinus, Beveren, Belgium “ Podcasting is the exchange tool for the near future: tell a story, add suitable drawings and self-made music – created using Garageband – and then publish it as a podcast. Child’s play... and highly innovative!”

David Baugh Denbighshire, UK “ iLife is such a simple tool to use that it requires very little training for teachers or pupils. This means that pupils can concentrate on learning and creativity rather then battling with the software. The other aspect that really impresses school users is the way it all links together so easily without you having to switch programs.”

App. A. Rh. Kantonsschule Trogen, CH, Switzerland “ Thanks to the high safety level, administration is straightforward under OS X; safety problems due to viruses do not arise.”

Professor Torsten Wiehe Universität Köln, Köln, Germany “ I did my homework, and every study I’ve ever read points out that the cost of owning a Mac is always less than the cost of owning any kind of Wintel machine – sometimes it’s as little as half the cost.”
