THE HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its highest highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed to become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. In his first season at Washington, Petersen led the Huskies to an 8-6 record and a berth in the TicketCity Cactus Bowl. He became the fastest active FBS coach to reach 100 career victories – doing so in 117 games – and tied with Knute Rockne for fifth fastest all-time after a win over cross-state rival Washington State in the Apple Cup. Petersen’s ‘Built for Life’ coaching philosophy has been embraced on and off the field by the Huskies in less than a year. Not only did Washing-ton produce three first-team and seven honorable mention All-Pac-12 players, but a combined five players earned first or second team Academic All-Pac-12 recognition, including Danny Shelton who was named First-Team Academic All-American – a first for Washington since 1991. Petersen, 50, the only two-time winner of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award (2006 and 2009), compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise State head coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and 14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and posted a 57-6 record in conference play. Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight seasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersen’s first season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated season since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season was capped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a game remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boise team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the polls for what would be the only time in Petersen’s first seven seasons. The 2008 squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the regular season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second undefeated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10, in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference ever to win two BCS bowl games. The ‘09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final AP poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking and a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas for Boise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final ranking. Last season, Petersen’s team went 11-2 and beat Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, which faced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW prior to the Broncos’ bowl game). Throughout his teams’ unmatched on-field suc-cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, Boise State was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and also receive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight such awards for the program. Boise State’s APR was second in the nation in 2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APR for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work with quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and Kellen Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as a starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moore was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passing and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAA history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice led the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season interception percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eight seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before taking over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator from 2001-05. Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In 1989, he became the Aggies’ varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. In 1993, he moved back west to take over

a QBs coach at Portland State, helping the Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995, he took a job at Oregon as receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a position he held before moving to Boise as coordinator in 2001. Born in Yuba City, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983 and went on to play QB at Sacramento City College. From there, he transferred to UC Davis, earning a degree in psychology in 1988. He later earned a master’s in educational psychology from Davis. At Da-vis, he set numerous school records, including the season mark for efficiency, completions, percentage, TD passes and total offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remains in the top 10 in Aggies his-tory in numerous season and career categories and his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1986, Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Player of the Year and earned UC Davis’ Colby E. Slater Award as the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the team’s Jerry Norris Award (Most Valuable and Inspirational) and was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, have two sons, Jack and Sam.

100 WINS: With last year’s victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup, UW head coach Chris Petersen reached his 100th career victory. At the time, it put his record at 100-17, meaning that it took him 117 career games to reach his 100th victory. Only four coaches in major college history did it faster:

Gil Dobie (N. Dakota St., UW, Navy, Cornell): 108 gamesGeorge Woodruff (Penn): 109 gamesBud Wilkinson (Oklahoma): 111 gamesFielding Yost (Neb., Kansas, Stanford, San Jose St., Michigan): 114 gamesChris Petersen (Boise State, Washington): 117 gamesKnute Rockne (Notre Dame): 117 games

Additionally, Petersen’s 117 games were fewer than any ACTIVE FBS coach re-quired to make it to 100 victories. Here are the top five:

Chris Petersen: 117 gamesUrban Meyer: 118 gamesBob Stoops: 122 gamesGary Patterson: 128 gamesSteve Spurrier: 129 games

PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2015 NCAA record book lists the top active FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS) and the Hus-kies’ own Chris Petersen tops this list. Here are the top 10 FBS coaches by career winning percentage, at the start of the 2015 season:

No. Name, School W L T Pct. 1. Chris Petersen, Washington ................. 100 18 0 .847 2. Urban Meyer, Ohio State ...................... 142 26 0 .845 3. PETERSEN’S FIRST FIVE: The NCAA Record Book also notes that Petersen won more games in his first season as a head coach (13-0 in 2006) than any coach in history and that his record over his first five seasons as a head coach (61-5) was fifth-best in history, ahead of the likes of Knute Rockne and Bud Wilkinson and behind coaching legends like Gil Dobie and Walter Camp. Here are the 10-best coaching performances over the first five years of a career:

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board last season, the Husky coaching staff obviously included mostly new faces. However, all of them are back for year two (see next note for more on that). Of the nine full-time coaches on the 2015 staff, six came to the UW from Boise State along with Petersen after 2013. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen’s staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988

to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 seasons prior to last year coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersen’s Bron-cos staff during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. He coached running backs his last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at Califor-nia from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State for Petersens’ last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana, he continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen’s DBs coach in Boise the last two years there, hav-ing spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida the previous two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013. Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from prior to 2014 is tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was also in charge of tight ends. Three of the UW’s four graduate assistant coaches are new in 2015, with Joshua Taufalele the only returner. Taufalale, a former New Mexico lineman, helps with the o-line. New to the GA staff are former Boise State receiver Kirby Moore, former Stanford defensive back Terrence Brown and former Kansas State linebacker Hansen Sekona.

STAFF CONTINUITY: Washington’s entire full-time coaching staff remained in tact following the 2014 season, which was coach Chris Petersen’s first at the UW. He, along with all nine full-time assistants, are back in 2015. That’s actually rare in UW history as the coaching staffs have gone unchanged over two or more sea-sons only twice before (UW records for coaching staffs go back to the mid-1950s): 1989-90 and 2009-11.

HUSKIES vs. COUGARS HISTORY: The Washington-Washington State series dates back to 1900, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle. Washington holds a commanding 69-32-6 edge in the 107-game series, including a 37-15 record in Apple Cup games (1962-present). The UW is 39-15-5 against WSU in games played in Seattle, Washington is 10-7 in games played in WSU's Martin Stadium as the first UW-WSU game wasn't played there until 1982. UW is 30-15-1 in away games in the series, including games played in both Spokane and Pullman. The Huskies have won 12 of the last 17 Apple Cups. Last year in the Palouse, Dwayne Washington rushed for 135 yards, including TD runs of 60 and 51 yards, to lead the UW to a 31-13 win. The Huskies held the Cougars scoreless until five minutes into the fourth quarter. In 2013 in Seattle, the Huskies overcame a 10-3 halftime deficit in a 27-17 victory. Bishop Sankey led the Dawgs with 200 rushing yards on 34 carries while Keith Price completed 15-of-20 for 181 yards. In 2012 in Pullman, WSU overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then won 31-28 in overtime. In 2011 at CenturyLink Field, the UW won, 38-21, behind 291 yards and three TD passes from Price. In 2010, Washington beat the Cougars, 35-28, in a tightly-contested game in Pullman. The winning score came on a 27-yard pass from Jake Locker to Jermaine Kearse with 44 seconds remaining. In 2009, the Huskies posted the first Apple Cup shutout since 1964 with a 30-0 win over the Cougars at Husky Stadium, breaking a two-game losing streak in the series. In 2008 in Pullman, the Cougars prevailed, 16-13, in double overtime. The year before at Husky Stadium, Alex Brink passed for 399 yards and hit Brandon Gibson with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to lead WSU to a 42-35 win. The Huskies broke another two-game losing streak with a 35-32 win in Pullman in 2006. In 2005 at Martin

T E A M N O T E SStadium, the Cougars beat the Dawgs, 28-25, behind a solid performance from Brink, who threw for two TDs and ran for another. Before that, in 2003, UW pulled a third-straight upset (by AP ranking) in the series when an unranked Husky team notched a 27-19 win over No. 8 Washington State. In 2002 in Pullman, in a game that surely ranks as one of the most memorable ever in the series, Washington shocked the No. 3 Cougars with a triple-overtime, 29-26 win, despite trailing by 10 with only 4:30 to play. In 2001, when the two teams met at Husky Stadium, the 16th-ranked Huskies upset the No. 9 Cougars with a 26-14 win.

WASHINGTON-WSU TIES: Husky linebackers coach Bob Gregory played football for the Cougars, graduating from WSU in 1987. Washington defensive line coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Choate worked on Mike Leach’s first WSU staff as the linebackers coach in 2012. WSU assistant strength coach Tyson Brown worked in the same role at the UW before moving to Pullman. There are three players on the Washington roster from the east side of the state of Washington: OT Trey Adams (Wenatchee), WR Drew Before (Spokane/Shadle Park) and DB Sean Vergara (Se-lah). While there’s just the three Huskies from the eastern side of the state, there are plenty of Cougar players from this side of the Cascades. Among them, WSU’s Peyton Pelluer is the son of former Cougar player and UW assistant coach Scott Pelluer, the nephew of former Husky QB Steve Pelluer and the brother of former Husky linebacker Cooper Pelluer.

DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washington’s most-played rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 107 times, Oregon in 107 games and Oregon State on 100 occasions. Wash-ington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-45-5, Washington State 69-32-6 and Oregon State 62-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 189-111-15 (.624) record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season on 86 prior occasions. Over those 86 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only seven occasions.

APPLE CUP QUICK FACTS: A few notes on the Apple Cup, proudly presented by Boeing: • This year’s game will be the 108th meeting between UW and WSU. The Huskies are 69-32-6 all-time vs. WSU. The series began in 1900, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie.• The UW-WSU game wasn’t called the “Apple Cup” until 1962. Prior to 1962, the two teams played for the Governor’s Trophy (1931-61).• Washington has played just nine overtime games in its history (overtime didn’t start until 1996 in college football). Four of those nine games have come against WSU: 1996 (UW win), 2002 (UW win), 2008 (WSU win), 2012 (WSU win).• The last three times that the Cougars were ranked in the AP top 25 heading into an Apple Cup, the Huskies have won the game (2001, 2002, 2003).• The Huskies have never lost more than two games in a row to WSU. On the other hand, UW has had 9 streaks of three or more wins in the series.• From 1955 through 1981, the Apple Cup was played in Seattle (odd-numbered years) or Spokane (even-numbered years).

DEFENSE: UW enters the week ranked atop the Pac-12 in scoring defense (18.5 points per game), total defense (352.7) and red-zone defense (77.1 percent). Through 11 games, the UW has not allowed more than 34 points to any opponent and have held six to 17 or fewer. The UW held Boise State to 16 points, 22.3 below its season average; USC to 12, 23.8 shy of its; and Arizona to three, 38.8 under the average. Opponents have scored touchdowns on just 14 of 35 attempts from inside the red zone (40.0) percent), by far the best such percentage in the Pac-12.

CAPTAINS: Washington elected six captains for the season, all seniors: TB Deon-tae Cooper, OLB Travis Feeney, QB Jeff Lindquist, WR Jaydon Mickens, OL Siosifa Tufunga, DL Taniela Tupou. The UW will also utilize one game captaion for each week’s contest. Here’s a list of game-by-game captains:

Boise State: Cory Littleton Sacramento State: Brian Clay Utah State: Joshua Perkins California: Kevin King USC: Keishawn Bierria Oregon: Coleman Shelton Stanford: Elijah Qualls Arizona: Budda Baker Utah: none Arizona State: Sidney Jones Oregon State: Brian Clay

THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 197-65-3 (.749) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were 4-2 in such games last season, and are 3-4 this season

HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 97 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 81-16-1 (.840) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 56-13-1 (.807) when rushing for 200 yards.

HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl and south up-per deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meet-ing rooms, coaches’ offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. UW is 14-7 at home since the re-opening of Husky Stadium.

ALASKA AIRLINES FIELD AT HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2015 season marks the 95th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 370-176-21 (.671).

ACADEMIC SUCCESSES• Washington’s APR (Academic Progress Rate) for football has gone up every year for the last four years in a row: 946 in 2009-10; 949 in 2010-11; 954 in 2011-12; 967 in 2012-13; 977 in 2013-14.• Washington’s most recent APR (977) ranked No. 2 in the Pac-12 Confer-ence, trailing only Stanford (987).• Three UW teams led the Pac-12 in APR in the most recent survey, while eight other UW programs ranked second in the conference.• The UW football team has four returning players who earned some level of Academic All-Pac-12 last season: first-teamer Jake Eldrenkamp (3.65 in business administration); second-teamer Siosifa Tufunga (3.31 in American ethnic studies); second-teamer Trevor Walker (3.48, pre-arts & sciences); honorable mention Jeff Lindquist (3.47 in business administration).•Washington’s team grade point average for spring, 2015 quarter (the most recently completed full academic period) was 3.08, highest in UW football history. Nine individual football players made the Dean’s List for spring, 2015. In total, 121 UW student-athletes made the Dean’s List last spring and 67 percent of all student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.00 or better. Seventeen teams had a team GPA of 3.00 or better.
