APPENDIX I A classification system of pesticides used in soya bean production

About the development of the classification system

Danube Soya has carried out in 2015 a stakeholder consul-

tation to improve the sustainable use of plant protection

products for soya bean cropping in the Danube region. Output

of this consultation process is the classification and recom-

mendation system of health and environmental side effects

of pesticides used in soya bean production in the Danube Soya

countries.

How to interpret the colour codes in the pesticide tables?

The classification system structures active substances of

pesticides into four categories (white, yellow, orange and red).

Detailed results, explanations and references of this classifi-

cation assessment can be found in the end of Appendix I. In

each country table, plant protection products are coloured

according to their active substance’s classification.

What are the Danube Soya recommendations?

In advance, preventive measures like the application of a prop-

er crop rotation, should be considered to reduce the need for

pesticides. If the use pesticides is required, follow the instruc-

tions given on the packaging and consider safety distances to

water courses.

Providing that alternative products for the target organ-

ism (e.g. weed grasses) and for the time of application (e.g.

post-emergence) are available, Danube Soya recommends:

» for RED coloured substances/products, to apply instead ap-

plicable and less hazardous substances (coloured in YELLOW

or   WHITE)

» for ORANGE and YELLOW coloured substances/prod-

ucts, to apply these products less often and to prefer instead

applicable   WHITE coloured products.

To reduce environmental and health risks Danube Soya recommends for highlighted products:

NEGATIVE SIDE

EFFECTS

Pesticides should NOT be used.

Pesticides should be used rarely.

Pesticides should be used less often.

Pesticides are assessed as less harmful than those above and SHOULD BE FAVOURED (if applicable).

The manual provides instructions (such as crop rotation) to manage weeds, diseases and pests in an integrated way.

3

Management tips for an effective and integrated herbicide strategy

1  Apply an economic and ecological practicable rotation of crops

Read also at chapter 2.3. Apply a diversified crop rotation with different crops.

As preventive measures consider:

» the effect of common hosts of diseases

» soya beans should not exceed 25% of a sequence on a parcel

 3  Proper planting performance

Read also at chapter 2.4.

» Only use certified quality seeds

» Early sowing delays soybean development. The temperature in seedbed layer should be ca. 10° – 12° C

» Follow recommended plant densities when you adjust your sowing devices

» Planting depth ~ 4 cm

2  Identify weed species of concern & avoid fields heavily infested by weeds

Read also at chapter 3.1. and 3.2.

 4  Mechanical weed control

Read also at chapter 3.5. and 3.6.

» Harrows and hoes are possible devices which are used at different growth stages of soya and weeds

» Don’t work under wet conditions to avoid soil compaction. Weeds will also be able to root again.

4

6  » No application on soils with low organic carbon contents

(<1% OC)

» General: Only apply with vegetated buffer zones of 5 m to adjacent water body

» Reduce application rate of bentazon to ≤1 kg AI/ha/yr

» No application during autumn and winter

» No application on shallow karstic soils (<30 cm stone-free topsoil)

» No application on soils with shallow groundwater (< 1 m below surface)

Stewardship recommendations for bentazon (by BASF)

 5  Pre-Emergent & Post-Emergent (if required) application of herbicides

Read also at chapter 3.5. and 3.6.

» Adapt your strategy to weeds present in the previous year

» Consider soil and product characteristics to optimise efficiency and reduce unwanted side effects

» Consider possible damages to crops

Success requires careful study of instructions on packaging!

» Apply herbicides at right growth stage and when soya is not under stress (drought, etc.)

» To avoid resistance of weeds to herbicides switch between different modes of action

Application of post-emergent herbicides Soya herbicides injuries
