Appendix A The following tables would be used to fill out the Dresser Industries hydraulic worksheet. The information in this appendix is reprinted courtesy of the Security Division of Dresser Industries. Table A.I: Contains the pressure ratings (in psi and the volumetric discharge (gal/stroke). Table A.2: With the pump output (gal/stroke) from table A.I and the pump rate (stroke/min) utilized, obtain the circula tion rate (gal/min). Circulation rates are based on 90% volumetric efficiency for duplex pumps. Table A.3a: The annular velocity depends on the circula tion rate, hole or casing size, and size of the drillpipe. Using the circulation rate from table A.2 and the hole and pipe size, calculate the annular velocity around the drillpipe. This annular velocity should equal or slight exceed the value established as the minimum annular velocity around the drillpipe. Table A.3b: Using table A.2, circulation rate with the hole and drillcollar size, determine the annular velocity around the drill collars. Table A.4: Describes four types of surface equipment (standpipe, hose, swivel, and kelly). Select the type that describes the surface equipment best. Table A.5: Determine the pressure loss through the surface equipment by correlating the surface equipment type (table A.4) with the circulation rate (table A.2). 253

Table A.2: With the pump output (gal/stroke) from table A.I and the pump rate (stroke/min) utilized, obtain the circulation rate (gal/min). Circulation rates are based on 90% volumetric efficiency for duplex pumps.

Table A.3a: The annular velocity depends on the circulation rate, hole or casing size, and size of the drillpipe.

254 / Drilling Engineering Handbook

Table A.6: Using the circulation rate and the drillpipe size, weight and type, determine the pressure loss through the drillpipe bore. Note that the loss is in psi/l000 ft. The pressure loss for the entire drillpipe string is calculated as follows:

(Press. loss from Table A6) Total loss = 1,000 X (Length of drillpipe).

Table A.7: Using circulation rate, the hole size and drillpipe size, determine the pressure loss in the drillpipe annulus. Note that the pressure loss is given in psi/l00 ft. Total loss can be calculated as in table A6.

Table A.S: The circulation rate and the drill collar bore size determine the pressure loss through the drillcollar bore. Note that the loss given by the formula above is in psi per 100 ft.

Table A.9: Using the circulation rate, hole size, and drillcollar size, determine the pressure loss in the drillcollar annulus. Note that the loss given in table A9 is in psi 100 ft.

Table A.10: The pressure available for nozzle selection is the difference between the operating-pressure limit and the actual system-pressure loss, corrected to 10 ppg mud. Table AI0 lists pressure losses through the nozzles and the jet-nozzle area for different combinations of parameters. Using the circulation rate, select a jet-nozzle size combination for which the pressure loss is equal to or less than the amount of pressure available. For step 11 of the worksheet this jet nozzle selection should yield optimum energy expenditure at the bit for a given circulation rate and pressure limit. The greatest jet-impact force is delivered if the pressure drop across the bit nozzles is 48 % of the surface pressure.

Table A.ll: Obtain the jet velocity by using the nozzle combination from table A.I0 and the circulation rate.

About the Author

Ellis H. Austin is currently working as a consultant to the petroleum industry. Recent projects have included enhanced oil recovery of steam, gas, and improved water flood, as well as geopressured, geothermal drilling. His more than thirty-eight years of experience in various phases of the petroleum and related industries include drilling operations in the Gulf of Suez for Transworld Egypt Petroleum Group, facilities design in the Argyll Field for Hamilton Brothers, Production Superintendent on N.W. Offshore Java for Atlantic Richfield Indonesia, and Maintenance Supervisor for Occidental of Libya. Additionally, he spent twenty years in oilfield sales and service and has owned and operated an equipment service and maintenance company. He has written a book on production calculations and has written papers on subsurface production chemicals and electric motors. He holds a B.S. degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering and an LL.B. degree.
