PROJECT STARTUPSIBM is giving its MBA students a shot at setting up their ownbusiness. lf they fail, they can still come back for placementsARUNDHATI RANADE
The recession is making everyone bend over backwards for survival. Educational institutions, in
this case, seem to be the forerunners. The city's premier B-school, Symbiosis Institute of
Business Management (SIBM), has taken a novel initiative of generating entrepreneurs ratherthan employees. They have begun a project under which they are deferring placements of thepresent batch of students for a year to allow them to explore business opportunities, provided
they choose this 'subject'.
While elaborating on these 'entrepreneurial' efforts, the director of SIBM, Dr Arun Mudbidri toldPune Mirror, "To encourage the entrepreneurial spirit among students, we offer entrepreneurshipas a major subject in semester lV of MBA. The students who take up this subject have to prepare
a business plan at the end the year. lf their plan gets approved by a committee of experts, theywilt even get funding for their proposal. The institute will take the initiative of getting them theseed capital for the venture." SIBM is also assuring students that they will take care of theirplacements, if their business plans fail. The students can take part in campus placements nextyear. "Our aim is to generate employers, instead of employees. lf students start their ownbusinesses, they can generate employment for others," said Mudbidri.
"Most other B-schools focus on getting their students placed in big corporate firms. But we alsofocus on generating entrepreneurs," he said. An entrepreneurs' laboratory that is to be launchedsoon will aid the purpose. lt will be a one-of-its kind lab in the country. 'We are taking help fromour well established alumni in setting up the laboratory. They are already working at higherpositions at various big companies and many are entrepreneurs themselves. The laboratory willcome up by January 2O1O," Dr Mudbidri said.
THE PLAN
MBA students who take up entrepreneurship as a major subject for their fourth semester have toprepare a business plan at the end of the year. Their plan will get checked by the expertscommittee of SIBM alumni. The committee members are industrialists. lf the business plan isapproved by them, they can provide seed capital for the venture initially. For a year, the studentscan try to set up their own business, and in case they fail, they can come back for campusplacements in the following year.
RECESSION HEAT
When asked about the effect of recession on this years' placement, Mudbidri said, "Althoughmost of our students have got offers from big corporate firms, the recession has affected us aswell. The effect can be seen on comparing salary packages of last year and this year." Thehighest salary offered last year by an Indian company was Rs 10.5 lakh, whereas this year, thehighest salary package offered is Rs I lakh. Last year, one of the MNCs offered a USD 85,000package for one of the students of SIBM, where as this year the best offer is of just USD 46,000.
HOW TO GET YOUR BIZ STARTED
. Go for 'entrepreneurship' as a major subject in semester 4
. Prepare a mind blowing business plan
. Submit it to panel of experts
. lf approved, get seed capital for your business
. Trial period - 1 year
. lf it fails, you can reapply for placement
