There’s something new in Keiko’s life.Oh, she did step out on her own as asingle mother a few years ago, but alsoadded “Professor” to her titles. Havingin August celebrated her 3rd anniver-sary as part of the faculty at the TsurugaCollege in Tokyo. Keiko is now …aProfessor. 21 Albums Deep after herstunning 1987 solo debut ‘A Drop ofWater’ floored the emerging U.S.smooth jazz world. Keiko first came tothe JazzTrax Island in 1989 and thenalong with their Tokyo home, becauseher “married days” she and husbandkept a 2nd home in Huntington Harboron the Southern California Coastline, which included a Sailboat, they andtheir young daughter Maya, begansailing to Avalon as their getaway des-

Shemet him backstage and Paul Taylor thenblended into Keiko’s band and soundfor several years, returning for the sax-ophone melody on her huge 2007radio hit “Black River.”

Keiko accepted JazzTrax invitation tostay a week in Summer and then aweek at Christmas 2008 at HamiltonCove on vacation. She still has a stand-ing JazzTrax offer to return anytime andif she wants to compose on theJazzTrax Grand Piano, alone in theAvalon Ballroom with no one around. That’s how ‘Moyo” came to be whichincluded ‘When I Close My Eyes,’ theJazzTrax 2007 Song of the Year.Going to Johannesburg, and each daybeing driven 30 minutes out into thecountryside to compose all day, eachday on a different piano, in a SouthAfrican piano factory. While continu-ing to tour All Over the World, her fullhome time base now Tokyo wheredaughter Maya is now grown and into‘dance’ and Mako is still growingup….Keiko’s mind often wanders to theocean breezes of her favorite “other”Island, her Adopted Island and thesound of the ocean waves breaking upon Hamilton Cove’s rocks.

Subsequentlywe all gave letters to sponsor this BritishKeyboardist to spend half a year here inthe States. Arriving in May with no placeto stay, Peter White offered a bedroom athis place in Sherman Oaks! Most smoothjazz stars offer an up and comer achance to maybe play on a song or intheir band. Guess Brits stick togethercause from Peter, Oli got a bedroom. Afamed trumpeter did that one time for afuture famed keyboardist and couldn’twait for the guest’s plane to return himhome. Quite the opposite here as Petersays Oli’s stay has been simply delightful.
