" # $ 5 comments THIS weekend and next, Bolton’s historic buildings will throw open their doors for people to celebrate the rich heritage of the town. But unless action is taken, some of these grand buildings could be lost forever. The landmark Bell Turret of St James the Great Church, Daisy Hill, Westhoughton will appear on register of at risk buildings when it is published by Historic England later this year and the news has sparked a new fundraising appeal. The register identifies sites most at risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development. St James Church’s 85ft bell turret has stood for almost 140 years and although the Grade II listed building is “generally in good order — the condition of the bell turret presents a significant cause of concern.” A tree has become established in the top and the root system is causing significant damage and potential falls of material within a short space of time if action isn’t taken. The recent drought conditions have temporally halted the growth of the tree, which, the church says, is a blessing, but the problem is still posing a huge problem. The significant damage makes the turret vulnerable to bad weather conditions and will probably increase in the next growing season. The action needed to save the historic structure will cost more than £120,000 and the Parochial Church Council is investigating all avenues to raise the money, including inviting donations and applying for grants. Glenys Latham, vice-chairman of PCC, said: “We need the sort of generosity shown by people such as sisters Alice Makant née Haddock and Margaret Haddock who gave the money to build the church in 1879; who’s gift was honoured in 1889 when funds were raised to install a ‘splendid’ stained glass window made by the company Morris & Co. founded by William Morris and fellow Pre- Raphaelite artists. “The story handed down through the generations in Daisy Hill is that the bell turret was built tall enough to be seen from Mill Lane where the two ladies, Alice Makant and Margaret Haddock, lived in Vale House.” The church was built between 1879 and 1881, and was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin. Its cost of £6,500 — equivalent to around £600,000 in 2016. Building work began on 24 February 1879, when the first sod was turned by Miss Haddock, and the foundation stone was laid by Mrs Makant. The church was consecrated on April 22 1881 by the Bishop of Manchester. The church is awaiting the appointment of a new vicar which means the PCC all of whom are volunteers, are shouldering the responsibility of trying to raise the funds. The PCC is investigating the possibility of obtaining an Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the aim of this grant would be to carry out necessary maintenance and repair works to the church and the churchyard. Longer term plans include exploring ways in which the building can serve the community as well as being a place of worship but the immediate risk to the bell turret is the absolute priority. The PCC is hoping that people will visit the church during the Heritage Open Weekend and find out for themselves how valuable it is to the community and what impact its loss would have. !
